Re: Modular Fighter

As I see it, a modular fighter would be modular at the factory, and not particularly modular in terms of field reconfiguration. The main feature that changes between versions is the weapon package: missiles, lasers, fusion, particle, boarding, etc. A lot of those have different energy requirements;...

Re: The Close Escort: not viable?

Yes, but you also get rewarded with Hull points for encasing all that fuel into the battleships armour. I need to do the number crunching to see how big a difference it makes. Take a simple BB: 105 kDt, GCr 72.7, J-4, 9G, Armour 15, Hull 84700, Meson 8DD. A BR with the same payload: 34 kDt, GCr 43....

Re: Modular Fighter

Ya mean MgT is pseudo science meeting semantic shenanigans?

Who'd have thunk it?

ETA:

On a more serious note, the travel calculator on page 153 of the 2e CRB would suggest otherwise.

Thanks

The way 2e space combat has been structured is all a bit too meta for me :|

Re: Modular Fighter

AnotherDilbert, have you tried or thought of scaling the fighter to 100 tons so it uses hard points not firm points?

Re: The Close Escort: not viable?

Loosely, a large warship that jumps for itself. Larger than anything in particular? 100,000 tons? At equal range a smaller vessel is harder to hit. True but at the distances ships can engage at, the targets are still tiny and tracked by computers, no Mk 1 Eyeball will help you. It's a meta decision...

Re: The Close Escort: not viable?

Would ships like this form the backbone of a sector navy? I don't think Battle Riders are a good idea in MgT2. A Battleship will have a lot more Hull points, and hence be a lot harder to kill. But I have only worked through a few simple examples. The Battle Rider was a tactical response to the LBB5...

Re: The Close Escort: not viable?

For shits and giggles I started the smallest ship that will hold the largest meson spinal this morning. I quickly realized it was going to be a battle rider. Will finish it up at some point (120,000 ton ships take a lot of work) along with a battle tender to carry it. Will see how many I can clamp t...

Re: Ship Design Philosophy

In my forever quest for more detail, I wonder what the different bay weapons actually measure. I mean, we know their displacement but as someone recently posted, I figure that bays would be similar to smaller spinals rather than a collection of large turrets/barbettes. Would that make the modules an...

Re: The Close Escort: not viable?

TCS (or Pocket Empires) gives us a hint, and the answer is a lot of them. The Imperial part of the Spinward Marches has a population of about 255 billion. If we estimate a GDP of kCr 5 / capita that is a total GDP of TCr~1275. It the worlds, subsectors, and Imperials together spend 1% of that on sh...

Indeed, most standard designs are not well thought through and are essentially not fit for purpose. Serendipitously that means that we can all design better ships ourselves.
Makes me wonder why the old ships are clung onto. New game, new ships, evolve the setting...

Re: Ship Design Philosophy

Or make the space on a ship modular and mothball the bay weapons till time of crisis when they can be fitted. In peace time cargo, passenger or fuel modules could be used. Also avoids heavily armed civilian ships wandering around and makes the ship cheaper and more able to pay its mortgage thru regu...

Re: Weathering high stellar radiation

Radiation would mostly kill people, EMP would mostly kill integrated circuits. Effects of radiation is fairly well described in the Core book, even if it is very simplified. The crew would be long dead before the ship suffered serious damage. Who's to say that TL12 circuitry is akin to current tech...

Re: Modular Fighter

They are just as much magic as air/rafts, neither more nor less. Indeed, something to throw into the "is Traveller hard SF?" thread! ;) Inertial Compensators or G-compensators are just another application of artificial gravity. Compensating for a few Gs simply means strengthening and tilting the in...

Re: The Close Escort: not viable?

With new design sequences, ship combat rules and 40 years of tweaking, it seems a little unfair to pit the venerable ships of the 3I against newer models optimized with the current rule set. I don't think that 25G ships were even thought of back when the Gazelle first appeared, things were firmly li...

Re: Modular Fighter

Linked to this thread from the Gazelle thread... I am pretty sure the rules don't say you can't but what's the deal with 25G? There's an assumption (is it actually written down somewhere in 2e?) that the M drive comes with "inertial compensators" or some such that means a human crew can survive/oper...

With that precedent, one could say that stellar radiation is as powerful as the story needs it to be.
I think Steve's right, Traveller ignores (for whatever reason) the science, go with what's right for your plot/game/story.

Re: Weathering high stellar radiation

I don't think the gas giant skimming rules have really taken this stuff into consideration. Page 77 of the CRB highlights radiation damage tho isn't specific about gas giants but does talk about solar flares. For gas giants, depending on how much you want to affect your players you could assign dama...

Re: The Close Escort: not viable?

Now there's a good role playing opportunity: you are a descendent of the original Gazelle designer. You are a noble with a steady income from royalties on the ship's sales. You are haunted by the deaths of so many in the ship you have become wealthy over and hounded by the relatives of the dead!
