Re: Thoughts on a TU w/o captal starships

Planets move on their orbits and move quickly. Given that time in jump can vary, the actual distance from the planet when you emerge can't be plotted. It's also why a ship should have to match the velocity of its target planet, not the one it's leaving. Best practice would perhaps be to plot exiting...

Re: US Navy launches new type of ship

It would be interesting to me (hahahaha) to combine this thread with the battle riders and no capital ships threads. Self contained fleet operations far from home. The jump tenders limited in size to X kdT and able to sustain combat for a prolonged period of time. I can see some very interesting des...

We could do something like that, but is even worth the trouble?
Absolutely not, it is not worth the trouble! It's one of the assumptions of the game.

I just don't understand why Baithammer is making a thing of it! I'll post no more till we get back to the thread.

Re: Thoughts on a TU w/o captal starships

And creates more uncertainty with ships transiting in normal space in the same area. Using Earth as an example, it's moving at 29.8km/s on it's orbital path, it's also orbiting a star that's moving thru space. The space at the 100D sphere of a planet is changing massively every minute. Which takes ...

Re: Thoughts on a TU w/o captal starships

Maybe, just maybe, with an established method of transport and centuries of travel, known astronomical data and all that stuff, someone has figured out a way to drop a ship from J space into N space safely? As AD pointed out, the location a ship exits jump space is known, the time it drops out is pr...

So, originally in CT, starships were limited in size to 5000 tons.

<snip>

What else might be different in this sort of TU?
Heron61, did the thread answer your question? Where do you think you might be going with this?

Could said that you might be over estimating the usable space for jump traffic as you want to be as close to the limit as possible without running the risk of jumping in on another vessel already present in the target area.
OK, educate me, how big is that space?

A lot of space within a system is inaccessible to jump traffic due to planetary bodies and ship sized objects
I'm not sure where you're getting the numbers from to back this up.

Respectfully, I think you're underestimating the size of space.

Re: Thoughts on a TU w/o captal starships

Given the potentially hostile environment that colonist could be heading to, smaller numbers would make more sense to me. I'm guessing that you're talking about your own setting rather than the Third Imperium as most of the colonization was done centuries ago. (Granted there is plenty of space for f...

If jump ships are limited to 5,000t or less, the ability to support colonies becomes rather limited.
Another way of looking at this is you become more choosy over what planets you actually settle, opting for planets that can support themselves.

Re: Terraforming Cordillon

I have used the UWP as my terraforming base. Each 100 years times the world SIZE divided by TL move the ATM, HYD, or TEMP by one unit (up or down Designers choice). At TL10, it takes several centuries to terraform a moderate world. Cost is 1 TRILLION credits per World SIZE point. The bigger the wor...

If anyone has, they need to get a life! Yeah, I hear ya! The interconnection of trade between all those worlds would be... complex. Pocket Empires said to exclude any world under population 6 as not economically significant which cuts out a hefty number. T5 has a simple Importance and Economics gen...

Re: Thoughts on a TU w/o captal starships

Thanks for the numbers!

Has anyone calculated the amount of trade available between systems in the Spinward Marches?

I know it's not that simple but there has to be a lot of trade to move a 275k dT cargo every 2 weeks.

After a few kDt ships scale almost linearly. The economics doesn't change much between a 500 kDt and 100 5 kDt ships.
Both in their construction and cost to run?

Re: Thoughts on a TU w/o captal starships

Faster communications would change the TU profoundly. And will arguably break all these years of canon. Doesn't seem like an option that's pursuable in the 3I setting. Capital ships date back how many years? I'd say that using the OTU as a base, they're here to stay. For an ATU, I'd love to see HG ...

Re: Thoughts on a TU w/o captal starships

Firstly, I really like the idea of a small ship universe. I also like the idea that as TL increases, the size of a ship capable of higher jump increases. I've not put numbers onto paper as I'm winging this post but it shouldn't be hard to come up with a table or formula. Recent threads have shown me...

Re: The Close Escort: not viable?

The augmentations is question as a package exceed a gunners projected salary by around 353 mos of pay, not really a good investment for the navy in bulk. An alternate way of looking at this, if a gunner is allowed to keep his/her augments on mustering out, what fee can s/he command when out of the ...

Why is there a lower limit of 10 tons for hulls?
I think this has something to do with crossing over with vehicles. I could be wrong.

Or maybe the augmentation prices haven't been thought thru with any detail?

You can buy nearly 4 air rafts for the price of the augs. Is that a fair exchange?
