Re: Why no career books?

First, thanks for adding me to the forum. Second, I LOVE Mongoose’s New Traveller. The best version of the game hands down, IMHO. I see in one of the old blog posts that Mongoose has moved away from Career books for the new edition of traveller. Why is this? While there may be a couple of areas tha...

Re: Brainstorming a Ringworld adventure

So they have the ability to extinguish stars without causing an immediate gravitational collapse creating a singularity?! Also they can manipulate the orbital physics of the other star(s) so the loss of the delicate gravitational balance doesn't send the stars winging off into the void? That's scie...

Re: Brainstorming a Ringworld adventure

How many surrounding star systems would you have to strip out to create a ringworld let alone a dyson sphere? Why would any race with the ability to decimate entire systems create a single structure to contain a million planet habitat instead of just terraforming a million worlds? This sounds like ...

Re: How do you generate child characters?

The skill Gunner includes both firing the weapons and maintaining the equipment on proper working order. It also includes the complicated business of putting missiles on a path that will intercept the target after what can be a long trip, and putting sand clouds into position where they can interce...

Some guy wrote a book series on genetically modified kids that played pew-pew in war simulators that really weren't war simulators, or some such nonsense.
Then again there was a movie called The Last Starfighter.

Re: How do you generate child characters?

Remember the Toonces Effect, you can still use a skill you have no levels in just not very well. There's a penalty but it's not like you can't perform a task. The kid could still operate a turret. You might not want someone performing surgery when they don't know what a laser scalpel is. Do you rea...

Re: Brainstorming a Ringworld adventure

Things will depend on the tech level of the inhabitants. Is there a functioning high tech society still operating on the Ringworld? A functioning train system seems to indicate yes, unless it is robot maintained long after the society has fallen. If the society is still running does it control all ...

Re: Brainstorming a Ringworld adventure

Their ship is disabled according to the OP. In other words it cannot fly by its normal means, but it still has a fusion reactor, an Engineer might be able to jury rig something that will allow it to fly within an atmosphere, perhaps using its areodynamic body shape to provide lift if it is pushed f...

Re: How do you generate child characters?

This is great, except I can't actually generate workable skill stats for characters below 18 years in the rules. The kid is about 13 years, I'm thinking. Any suggestions? Traveller doesn't do a good job simulating people who aren't from the mid 20th century (and possibly later) America very well. I...

Re: Brainstorming a Ringworld adventure

The fastest subsonic aircraft is the Boeing Dreamliner. It tops out at Mach 0.85 (1050 km/h, 650 mph). To give an idea of the size of a 1 AU ringworld, 1 million km wide, let's fly a Dreamliner around it. 1 AU diameter is 149.6 million km. That times pi is 470 million km. Dividing the 470 million k...

Re: How do you generate child characters?

It wouldn't be out of the question for a 13 year old to have piloting skill so he could fly a spaceship. especially if he grew up on one. Basically a Weslie Crusher type.

Re: Brainstorming a Ringworld adventure

Back to the original question then :) Your set up has a ship crew stranded. They are not the first, and no one else has ever made it back. There is a functioning railway to the control centre. Well the are not going to find a solution there or the previous ship crews could have done the same. So th...

Re: Brainstorming a Ringworld adventure

Well the Ancients are part of the setting, Yup, a pretty major influence on the OTU if the authors decided that they should make megastructures, then they will make megastructures, whether it makes sense for them to do so or not. The authors so chose, as to the reasoning behind why the Ancients did...

Re: Brainstorming a Ringworld adventure

If you can create something as big as a ringworld, why would you need to create a pocket universe? In a sense, an inhabited ringworld already is its own pocket Universe with 3 million Earth's worth of inhabitable land area. Why indeed... You'd have to ask the Ancients or even earlier advanced races...

Re: Terran Trade Authority - 40th Anniversary Kickstarter

Reviews of the new series have been lukewarm (an average of two out of five star rating on Amazon.com), as some have felt that the artwork has been hastily built in 3D, and with a lack of attention to detail - including many obvious text errors. Also, the text has been heavily revised with respect ...
