Re: Beta critique: Element: travele4.pdf: Multimode Decoy

Yeah, I agree the operator needs to spend time to configure/operate the decoy. As a side effect, this whole thing can make sensor operator's work more interesting. They will have limited time and might (unless the ship has 231231 sensor stations) need to chose actions - lock; break lock; EW missiles...

Re: Beta critique: Element: travele4.pdf: Salvo Decoy

Will that be sufficient? The net will be -4 more compared to the current. (now is -2 from beyond short; -2 more from to Difficult and -2 more from long range)

Re: Beta critique: Element: travele4.pdf: Concentric Attack

I was looking it from the size of the pod (of the preview). A missile specialist only operates with his section of the armament. It's never listed if there is a limit of a section, but I assume that the pod is the kind of "optimal" size setup. If it depends on the size, it should be something very, ...

Re: Beta critique: Element: travele4.pdf: Concentric Attack

It's supposed to be a difficult operation, which requires a specialized operator and a dedicated missile control centre. In terms of gameplay, if it provides rewards, there should be some kind of risk. If there is only reward, it's not fun after a while. --- Maybe if the difficulty raises with 1 ban...

Re: Beta critique: Element: travele4.pdf: Multimode Decoy

So, we need some sort of limitation to avoid multimode decoy spam? It hasn't listed time, so we can assume 1 round. A limitation would be taking the sensor operator to guide and control the decoy, i.e. a few rounds. But does it make sense? If the decoy is autonomous it might not. There could be a li...

Re: Beta critique: Element: travele4.pdf: Salvo Decoy

It takes a round to do this check. But most military ships will have at least a second operator.

Anyway, with the significantly powerful sensors (Very advanced + Enhanced Signal Processing), the DM is high enough to make the check very easy.

Unless it's designed to fool only weak sensor ships.

Perhaps the difficulty can raise with salvo size representing managing more complex control situation?

I don't want to compromise your product, so share only what you feel is safe. I am interested in the % realted to costs/gains.

When do sandcasters and screen "react"?

Edit: about the sequence around rolling for attack and rolling for damage. It might be a Referee preference since it's not specifically noted in the rules. Basically the earlier the reaction, the less efficient they are, overall. Example: If sandcasters react when the enemy rolls for attack, then if...

It's a snapshot of a battle scene. Don't overanalyze it.

But it inspires me to include the ship in an adventure!

Re: Air/Raft spaces

Thinking about it, more spaces = more hull points.
At the same time I don't think it's necessary to fill ALL available spaces with something.

But more space for the driver makes most sense.

Re: Char Gen House Rules

We play by the random rules mostly. Of course, in some edge cases, the Ref makes a call and allows for a certain modification.

We roll stats and if they are under 42 (sometimes higher), we roll again. When a few sets of stats are rolled, the player can choose from them.

Not to discourage you, but you will find other inconsistencies in the example vehicles. Perhaps some are intentional.

Re: What is the deal of decoy missiles?

There is some sort of strategy I see. Let's say you have 2 bays. You plan to fire 48 missiles towards the enemy. The enemy PD can stop 36 missiles. If you fire 48 nuclear missiles, the enemy will stop 36, so only 12 will hit. If you somehow overload his PD, (decoy missiles, multiwarhead or something...

Re: Air/Raft spaces

Keep in mind the rules there are loose. It's even mentioned in the book - you make your vehicle, but if you feel something needs a tweak, which is not mentioned in the rules - you simply do it. However, I am not sure if the air raft is tweaked. Let me check it out! Edit: well, you can assume the pil...

Re: What is the deal of decoy missiles?

Those are valid points, but standard missiles will also keep the enemy PD's busy, and they are cheaper. Perhaps the Decoy will keep more PDs busy.

Maybe it can be "programmed" to appear as another type of missile, until it's about to hit.

What is the deal of decoy missiles?

After some pondering, I see some utility of the decoy missile, but most of the utility gets outplaced by any other missile in the same price range.

Do you have any use cases of the decoy missile, which can't be achieved using, standard, advanced or long-range missiles?

Re: Dogfight rules

I remember reading on a few spots that one of the ships can escape the dogfight.

However, how is that possible, and when to your interpretations? Is it really possible if the enemy is faster? Also, I assume, at best, if possible at all, it will give 1 round (6 min) before the enemy catches on.

I think he is also working on some other stuff, not directly related to Traveller. You can also check his book on military topics (amazon is a good place to see the list). Unlike some wannabe writers who publish a book and a half, Mr Dougherty writes. A lot. His style is strangely familiar to the on...
