Re: Improving characteristics during play

Only direct route I see is finding a high-TL medical facility and spending 500,000/1 million/5 million credits on a characteristic augmentation. Which is spendy, but entirely in line with Traveller's tradition of gear as character improvement. I like the stat training idea, but the RAW limits stat i...

Re: [1e] Core vs Central Supply Catalog

Very much intended to replace - it changes quite a few rules in a fundamental way (like giving armour piercing traits to pretty much every slug weapon, and giving a clip capacity to the PGMP). Thanks, that was a big part of my question. Ironically given I'm trying to use CSC, my plan was to drop ar...

Re: [1e] Core vs Central Supply Catalog

I get that, but the Big Game Rifle is the one that costs more (by 3 1/2 times). If there was anything at all it was better at I would assume it was on purpose, but when one is better in every way I start to wonder if there's a misprint. I almost wonder if the Big Game was supposed to be TL 4 and got...

[1e] Core vs Central Supply Catalog

So I'm digging into CSC again, with an eye to coming up with a campaign equipment list somewhere in between it and Core in number of options. A couple questions arise. Has anyone done an edited list like this? Or is CSC an open book to your players if you're using it? I notice that, in regards to gu...

Re: Selling Starting Gear

Interesting. Have never actually had anyone turn down the skill ranks. But, I've only played with lower-term characters [more on that below], so we were hungrier for skill ranks. I might say they're free to sell them in character, at the table, once play starts. Not just cash them in during char-gen...

Re: Large amounts of cash on ships

Although there may be little Imperial presence, it's close enough to the Imperium that the Imperial Credit could be the standard currency. In the real world, any time a nation has been in a state of economic chaos such that their own currency was distrusted, major country currencies – US Dollars, E...

Re: Tech Superiority

I'm reminded I once meant to go through the CSC process for designing higher tech versions of lower tech items, with the idea of statting up things meant for trade goods, colonization vehicles, survival kit components and so forth. Got distracted by real life and never got to it, but maybe I'll go b...

Re: Items 1 tech higher

If nothing else, and you think a particular item a player is after could go either way, you can just throw dice at it and ask for a Broker or possibly a Streetwise check to find one.

Re: Items 1 tech higher

1e CSC suggests imported gear may be available near a class C or better starport, but away from the starport the local tech level prevails. Suggested price increases are 25% higher than list for 1 TL difference, 50% higher for 2 TL, and double the price for 3 TL higher. Gear with a higher TL differe...

Re: Thoughts on Making Traveller Psi Slightly More Important & Powerful

I like it. Psionics is probably the first thing I'd house rule in a custom setting. (Somewhere I have some custom psionic careers, though I've never actually had an opportunity to put them in play.) And I think mentat-type powers are under-represented in rpgs, though in fairness they're harder to pu...

Re: MgT Ursa - First Draft

So per the older MgT1 rules, Large creatures have 3d6 for physical stats? For Str and End yes, but Dex is 1d6. One more thing. Natural weapons. On page 116 (a long way from the combat rules) I finally found how much damage you do in unarmed combat. 1D6 Even though I used "brawling" in my opening pa...

Re: MgT Ursa - First Draft

Disclaimer: I have not seen T20, so I'm working solely off the 1e Mongoose book. A key question is whether they are Large or not (as the mechanical tag, not simply a bit tall). If Large, they qualify for 3d6 Str, 1d6 Dex, and 3d6 End, replacing any +'s and -'s. It sounds to me like they qualify, but...

It would need a theme song. I'm not making fun either; I think security/troubleshooters on a large passenger liner could make a good campaign frame.

Re: Interstellar law in non-aligned space

When it comes to areas of chartered space outside the Imperium or other empires, confederations and so on (like District 268 or much of the Trojan Reach), how are things like red-zone interdicts enforced? Ships on station from whoever red-zoned it. If that's sensitive politically then gunships not ...

Re: Monthly Maintenance

I'm tempted to count the base wages of extra, above required crew number, mechanics and engineers against monthly maintenance costs. Or maybe only up to a % if you want to require parts purchases as well.

Re: Wagon Train to the Stars

There needs to be a reason to colonize a planet. If it's an earth-like, which the OP stipulated, that's the reason. Get in on the ground floor and their grandchildren will be major land owners or stake holders (they believe) of a garden world. Also, there's a lot of room between TL1 and TL12. You d...

Re: Wagon Train to the Stars

It's an interesting source of surplus (thus PC owned) ships. But I can see a lot of them being used as the core of the new community... i.e. as the village power plant and shelter the first few winters. If you know you're doing this you could try to get away with skimping on maintenance on the way ...

Re: Cheap ships, expensive to run.

I handled this a bit differently - make the ships cheap to buy and cheap-ish to run, but keep the total amount of money available to the PCs low. I've assumed a market for secondhand starships such as free traders, the price of which is largely driven by the condition of the ship and the revenue ge...

Re: Cheap ships, expensive to run.

Tolcreator, I think this is awesome and I plan to try it out at my next opportunity. Although that might be a solo play trading game, since I'm running something else entirely at the moment. What I like about it for campaign play though is it's a lot easier to just give out a ship without instantly ...

Re: Kickstarting Traveller Products

I think Kickstarter was originally conceived as a funding mechanism, not a pre-order service. In principle, you're an investor, not a customer. Its fair to say that's not how either the backers or the creators are using it anymore, but that was the original pitch. The market's still settling around ...
