Re: Robotic ships

Actual robotic space ships are expressly allowed by Mongoose rules, at least for small craft, and rules are given on their operation etc. See High Guard page 60, "Drones".

Re: Robotic ships

I can't see any reason to prevent anyone from building an in-system robotic ship. We build them all the time here and now (Voyager, Cassini, Curiosity, Opportunity, etc). Not to mention the regular HTV resupply missions to the ISS, all of which are unmanned and automated. HTV-4 Info List of unmanne...

Re: Robotic ships

They just lack the "life force" (not "soul", this is science) needed to pilot a jump ship. ..is there any actual piloting involved in jumping a ship? Surely one doesn't actually control the ship's course when it's in jump space. Mongoose rules state there in a divert power roll, which is si...

Re: Robotic ships

I know that jump capable ships must be manned. That is if you ignore that little blurb about jump-torpedos in the Leviathan adventure. Let's just say you have to have a living, thinking being in a jump ship. What about non-starships? Is there any canon saying they have to be manned too? For example...

Re: Jump Bubble diameter and location of Jump Drive

Thanks guys.

Coincidentally, in my PbP campaign the players have just breached the hull of another ship and I'm wondering if it would now be able to jump safely or not.

Frankly, I'm unsure. Any input would be welcomed.

Re: Jump Bubble diameter and location of Jump Drive

Does anybody have any references for this 'meter from the hull' please?

Re: Jump Bubble diameter and location of Jump Drive

1. What's the diameter of the Jump Bubble? 2. Does the diameter vary, depending on the tonnage of the drive, it's damage status, etcetera? The Jump bubble is generally conformal to the hull, forming approx a meter or so away.... Interesting, I've never heard that before. Do you recall where this id...

Re: Star Frontiers conversion

Your universe, your aliens, your rules. :P I'd encourage you to make them the way you'd like them or imagine them, not as 100% faithful conversions. However, you could simply give them an innate +1 DM on any social skills such as persuasion, deception, diplomacy, steward & leadership etc, I think th...

Re: Star Frontiers conversion

I guess you'd to need to convert the aliens to have the six Traveller attributes, skills and create rules for any special abilities. Converting characteristics will slightly tricky as SF is a weighted percentile system and Traveller uses a range. The typical human range is 2-12 (2d6 distribution), b...

Re: How long does...

Well, considering that our faster supercomputers today can take much longer to figure out real space n-body problems, maybe figuring out Jump space nav problems is much harder? YMMV Yes, agreed. What I'm getting at is the comparison of human v computer. Computers are much faster at mathematical pro...

How long does...

...a ship's computer with an astrogation expert program take to run a jump plot?

10-60 minutes (the human time frame given in CRB) seems like a long time for a futuristic computer. Thoughts?

Re: Star Frontiers conversion

I'm not sure I get why you would want to do such a conversion. Star Frontiers is arguably (at it's heart) as good a rules system as Traveller, or at least it has a lot of merit as a RPG rules system. Where Star Frontiers went a bit awry is in the leftfield aliens. If you like the aliens and the sett...

Re: What's wrong with this Vargr?

lol @ mange Worms & mange and dirty, smelly tails cos 'stuff' gets stuck in their fur since it would be difficult to raise a tail very high if you're a biped and almost impossible to use a toilet. Also, it would be annoying getting it stuck in the air lock, or in an escalator, or having one leg made...

Re: What's wrong with this Vargr?

I'd say, after the initial uplift, vargr had plenty of time to evolve beyond their original design. I'd fully agree, that is if we must stick with the OTU mumbo-jumbo about talking/walking dogs. Adaptations such as short or no tail would probably be seen in a matter of generations if it was an impe...

Re: T5 Personal Combat System Review, Opinion, and Problems

Thanks for this detailed and interesting summary! I think the majority of Traveller fans lean more towards facts than vagaries even if they don't like bean-counting ammo I don't think they'll like that aspect of the game removed. For me this is almost a deal breaker as far as T5 is concerned. It's l...

Re: What's wrong with this Vargr?

What are the evolutionary benefits of a tail to a clothes-wearing biped? I suspect there are none, even with a little slit for it to poke out and wag or whatever. Is there any 3I lore that states Vargr have tails?
