Glad the examples helped. Maybe a couple of examples of a binding might help as well then: Madoc the shaman decides to unleash a bane spirit on his enemies in the neighbouring clan. He goes on a spirit quest to find a suitable spirit, arming himself with guardian spirits and leaving his fetch and as...

Covenant – spirit will only assist if a bargain or agreement is struck, if treated with hostility it will flee or attack back. Healing and birthing spirits are a good example, they are useless if attacked and bound and will only heal or assist those who offer them some form of service or agreement....

For example, a neutral spirit that has been defeated and bound to service isn't necessarily going to resent it, that's just the way the spirit world works. Personally, how I play it is that being bound is never a good thing. The one exception to this are friendly spirits for traditions: for them th...

That's an excellent idea! I really like that list, it looks like it clears things up a lot. Some of them are problematic, though, you can't just say a spirit "is hostile", it's going to depend on who you are in most cases. Friendly (Umathi), Hostile (Darkness Cults), that might work. The hostile, f...

I thought a sort of glossary of some of the traits, abilities and powers of some of the spirit world might prove useful. The ones underlined are specifically from the Core rules, any others are either generic terms or of my own invention. The list is a bit ad hoc at present but I will add to it and ...

It will lend its POW as Magic Points and its Common Magic skill can be used in place of the mortals when casting Common Magic. Its Persistence can be used in place of the mortals for resisting spells that require Persistence. That seems amazingly powerful compared to other spirits - mostly you get ...

I managed to cut magic spirits from the article by accident somehow, here they are for those who may want some information on them. Magic Spirit Skills: Common Magic (POWx5%), Persistence (POWx5%) Magic spirits are a spiritual manifestation of the Magic Rune. Magic spirits will know a number ...

Maybe use the original attack roll that entangled to determine the chance of the 'automatic' trip attempt?

...assuming your players have got used to remembering their rolls and not just scooping their dice up quickly.

I have no idea how they might relate to the Elric setting but there are a couple of spirit lords in S&P90 who could perhaps be adapted to a Chaos/Law god.

I just wanted to say I've enjoyed the two articles, as well as this thread a lot. I'm really getting to like Spirit Magic. It is scary, flexible and very, very cool. Thanks guys. Thank you, the feedback is very much appreciated and it's been a lot of fun writing them with Bruce and Nick as well. Ac...

Even a small sylph is pretty impressive with its visual effects, there must be a thousand smaller spirits than a sylph to control the tiny breezes and moving air all day. The same goes for a fire, you start a fire on the mundane plane and you birth a fire spirit on the spirit plane. It might only be...

As it says: A spirit magician embodying an elemental spirit essentially becomes an elemental of size based on the spirit’s Intensity as outlined on the table on the next page. Hm, that's cool, but I'm not sure if it's... right, if you know what I mean. It's a big change. I'm cool with a new edition...

Whilst I take your point, you also need to consider that most spirit magicians are not shamans and will only be dabbling in the shallow end of the tradition with a competent shaman on hand when they do. I like the characters in my game to start out at Fervent Member level. I would suggest they obta...

I'm still getting the impression that, while with other magic systems a failed skill roll means the loss of 1MP, an equivalent failed skill roll for a Spirit Magician can mean death or a hideous disease. The first page talks quite casually about shamans binding bane or disease spirits, yet the cons...

I have just posted this on a different thread but thought it worth re-posting here for those following the Viking theme, apologies to those who have already seen it: On jewellery and costs: I have a few I've worked out for my Vikings campaign, but they will be of little use in a fantasy campaign as ...

Yes. Sounds like somebody wants to know how much those silver plates and candlesticks sacked from some monastery are worth!!! Vikings campaign, eh? I have a few I've worked out for my Vikings campaign, but they will be of little use in a fantasy campaign as money and values are very different. Howe...

Nice play report, Vagni! I like that your characters are not adventuring all the time but rather they have down-time as well. This puts all the adventuring time to a perspective. I have thought to use this method as well in the game that I will run some time in the future (whatever it will be). I d...

Well we played the final part of the winter raid last week and it was great fun. Here's a potted summary for those who would like to follow the saga. Egill got his archers on the ridge, commanded by Hrani from the last scenario, to move along in two groups of five and pin down the Svear behind the w...
