Re: Do Mishaps by default terminate a career?

Some of the rules are written in the events themselves. They over-ride.

The thread on number of skills for a competent character got me wondering: what skills have others dropped in the interest of simplifying the game?
None. I've only changed some skills to match different settings played in.

And it’s given me some freedom to throw larger and more dangerous situations at them and tell some broader and more complex stories.

Re: How many skills to describe a competent character?

Saw this in another thread, but didn't want to derail it: Traveller being on the end of "skills light RPG" (compared to something like GURPS) means players already can't get sufficient skills to describe a competent individual... Which is I was somewhat surprised by, because that's not my impressio...

Re: Is SOC per society?

Few Referees know how to handle SOC, because few Referees know where the 3rd Imperium even comes from that uses it. The rest have to figure out where that puzzle piece goes, and how it fits in with the alien varieties of it. If players choose not to use the 3rd Imperium setting, then SOC will have t...

Re: [Drinax] Where is the Queen?

The Sindalian (and Drinaxian) rulers are clearly autocratic in nature, and an autocrat rules alone without a partner. Therefore, Oleb had consorts*, NOT queens, and if one of the PCs gets to marry princess Rao, he's just another consort, NOT the ruler of Drinax. From someone that knows 57th century...

Re: What to do

Always with the math. Can't Travellers ever be Travellers without bragging how much MCr they make? How about taking all their riches away. Then see how far a game session is role-played out with your players.

Re: Why no career books?

Thanks for the reply. Perhaps I find the differences between the two skill systems more distracting than others do (and I much prefer 2nd ed), but I can always tweak them to my own tastes. I’ll download the first Spica book and give it a shot. Most of the time, any rule conversion will simply invol...

What do you think?
The beauty of Mongoose Traveller 2nd edition is the culling of DMs from Task Checks. They should be used sparingly. What does the Vehicle Handbook say about advanced sensor rules that the Core Rulebook suggests using?

Re: Why no career books?

Careers aren't the same thing as character classes in D&D. Character classes have unique abilities, careers are just packages of skills and equipment, the only career with unique abilities is Psion. Psion career skills are only unique when a Referee doesn't allow Travellers to have them. I have qui...

A career is nothing but a background for determining skills, initial starting funds and equipment, after a character is established, it no longer matters.
Not a role-player, apparently. The career books were far more than just that besides.

This is great, except I can't actually generate workable skill stats for characters below 18 years in the rules. The kid is about 13 years, I'm thinking. Any suggestions?
Choose a homeworld to generate a character from. Starting age is 13 +1D4 - 1D4. Don't give them a career or anything. Done.
