Re: loans for Speculative Trade?

Yes. Pretty much any lender willing to loan to a player-character spec-trader is going have the middle name "The". You know, Johnny The Fish, Jimmy The Squirrel, Jabba The Hutt...

Re: Gauss Weapons - Zero-G?

Reynard, recoil is determined by muzzle energy, period. It doesn't matter if you're firing great big slugs at a slow velocity or teeny-tiny hypervelocity darts, if the muzzle energy is the same, so is the recoil.

Re: Gauss Weapons - Zero-G?

Short answer: unless there is some sort of inertial dampening system or the weapon is firing something massless, there will be recoil. Accelerator weapons, aka gyrojet guns, get around this problem (as stated by Annatar) by using a low-power charge to get the projectile out of the weapon itself, the...

Re: New Paizo SF RPG: Competitor with Traveller?

For those of you who visit the Starfinder forums, are they full of people bitching about typos and rules they don't understand? Erhm... haven't seen much of that, although there is a thread entitled, "Let's Queer Up Starfinder!" (And yes, I did use the word "entitled" deliberately.) Even though the...

Re: New Paizo SF RPG: Competitor with Traveller?

Well, I've started to look through it and, in answer to the original question, I've got to say that Starfinder is not , in my opinion, really competing with Traveller - except maybe in the same sense that Jane Eyre competes with, say, Anne Rice's Vampire series. Yeah, they're both part of the same i...

Re: New Paizo SF RPG: Competitor with Traveller?

I saw they're selling the PDF for $10 to get people buying it. Actually, if you look at the Pathfinder books on the Paizo site, you'll see that pretty much all of them have the PDF going for $10 or less. I think that's pretty much their pricing policy - it hasn't changed since they started offering...

Re: Taking / Claiming ships

Okay, there are a few issues here. First of all, a corsair/pirate ship is probably not going to be a bank-financed purchase - it's a severely risky business model, with the ship most unlikely to survive until the end of the term of purchase. If it's a financed purchase at all, it's almost certainly ...

Re: Accommodation option question

The time it takes for driving to become a recreational skill rather than routine transportation will depend on whether retrofit kits are affordable; they would greatly accelerate the decline of human driving. Having seen the roads around here, and especially the way people are "driving" after less ...

Re: Economics of shipyard

For most ships the players are going to be interested in, basing the build time off of volume is a "good enough" solution. Players are going to be interested in either cargo/passenger ships (the cube-root case above) or a light quasi-military ship for either mercenary work or piracy/anti-piracy/priv...

Re: Economics of shipyard

I don't particularly care for basing construction times on ship price. As a rule of thumb, I set the construction time for any ship I regard as either "custom" (typically, designed by the player) or specialized (anything that comes from the shipyard armed, particularly with anything heavier than tur...

Re: Solving the IR problem in Traveller

As an ironic aside, like the ramjet engine increasing efficiency with speed, Stealth might actually increase the efficiency of the Power Plant as the temperature rises from its use as a heat sink. The biggest problem I can see with this is that you run the risk of having too much energy to dump int...

Re: Laser rifles in the military

For that tech level, a laser rifle would fit in the same niche as a crew-served weapon, such as a GPMG. It's really too bulky/heavy to fill an infantry weapon slot, although it could be used in a man- or squad-portable role, but it's about the right weight and power for (as an example) a vehicle-mou...

Re: High Guard Non military?

Something I would quite like to see: some form of official guidelines on refits/modifications/upgrades for ships. What sort of changes can be made to an existing ship, and what would said changes cost? What sort of facilities are required in order to have such modifications made? (If you can get an ...

Re: Synchronized Jumps

There are actually multiple factors involved in the decision about whether or not convoys will form. First, do the ships' captains/owners perceive a need for the protection of a convoy? If not - if there isn't enough piracy or other trouble in the area to make the decision-makers that concerned - th...

Re: High Guard is Here!

Does the above mean that the minimum tonnage for a hamster cage would be about 120 d-tons? That would be about the minimum for a full ring structure . Bear in mind that a rotating structure doesn't have to be a full ring - any rotationally symmetrical structure can be used. For example, the structu...
