I never felt that JoT should be a 'levelled' skill - you either had it or you didn't - what it did was give you the "insight" that would let you 'hack' something using your other, 'inappropriate' skills and random knowledge - sort of 'thinking outside the box(es)'. As a binary (yes/no) skill, it cou...

Captain Jack: If that most excellent text turns out NOT to be in conflict with the Zhodani canon, I hereby plead with you to tighten it up and expand it and submit it to Freelance Traveller for the Lecture Hall and Library section of Kurishdam. On second thought, I so plead even if it IS in conflict...

Just flipping this back to the top. Hey, do any of the writter/publisher types who work for Mongoose like/loath this thread? I have a better question, for all the contributors to this thread, past, present, and future: May I have explicit permission to snarf these and reproduce them in Freelance Tr...

One nit - I'd make the base cost for a world db Cr50 instead of the same Cr10 for the local. Or maybe additional levels: Local (city, district, province) Cr10 Regional (region, nation, continent) Cr25 Global Cr50 Cluster (up to 10 worlds within J2 of world of purchase) Cr100 Subsector Cr250 Quarter-...

Most of the adventures at Freelance Traveller don't inherently meet the 'down-to-earth, lightly comical or bizarre adventures, a mixture of Futurama and Firefly' criteria (although there are a couple whose premises may be considered 'bizarre'), but a creative GM might well be able to do something wi...

There was a period of time where spammers were sending out their spam with subject lines of two or three random words, often obscure ones. I collected a bunch of them specifically to use as ship names: Radiation Regatta Comet Catamaran Styrofoam Pterodactyl Alluvial Lifeboat Meek Mollusc Jeffersonia...

Well, how about losing the Extra Facility; 'cause I was a little iffy on that one to begin with. Yes, this would be a good one to drop. Also, because of leverage issues, given the way the four arms are arranged, I'd not give them the Applied Strength advantage for lifting or carrying. For grappling...

It occurs to me that it might be worthwhile to draw connections between Traveller and SF - there is quite a lot of stuff out there that inspired the creation of Traveller, provides inspiration to the Traveller player/referee, or simply plays to the same emotional (for lack of a better word) tropes t...

Thanks for the references! I think, though, that most of Freelance Traveller is oriented not at bringing the new player into Traveller and 'spreading the love', but at bringing new ideas to the player who already loves Traveller. As such, there really isn't a lot of stuff there that does impart the ...

Agreed, but they still need some disadvantages. This changes them from 'Human minor race that's unbalancing' to 'Humanoid minor race that's unbalancing'.

When I was running, most of the games were either merchant, intel, or a combination of the two.

The closest I ever got to outright military-type campaigns was personnel-extraction missions - go in, get the kidnapped or stranded individual (one only), get out.

In one adventure I ran, the PCs were given some documents, one of which was encrypted. It turned out that other clues told them that if they decrypted the document, they'd get - among other things - a password that would give them access to some critical files that would let them earn the bonus paym...

On the unfortunately rare occasions that I've run Traveller, I've generally just put the world wherever it was convenient for the campaign arc I was planning. When that campaign would be brought to a close, and a new campaign with new characters started, I'd reset to a canonical base and work from t...

I think they need some disadvantages to go with their advantages; otherwise, they're potentially too unbalancing. My problem with IRIS is that it seemed a little too much like some hypersecret agencies that had appeared in other fiction I'd read, such as CURE from the Destroyer series, or 'QCIC' from another story that I can't recall at the moment (QCIC was from the Latin, Quis Custodiet Ipsos Custodes? , "Who ...

Getting Off The Ground and Up Close and Personal are section of Freelance Traveller, for adventure seeds and character/NPC profiles, respectively. UC&P is reminiscent of the original JTAS Contact feature, and GOTG is not dissimilar to published adventure seeds from non-GDW Traveller pubs.
