social standing rambling and possible interaction houserules

I thought I'd post this bit of rambling before I lost interest It relates to the discussion about nobles and the role of social standing in the game. And my disappointment that rpg's in general seem to ignore interpersonal interactions when compared to the attention shown to combat issues; rpg's ten...

Re: How do you handle playing or running a game with noble P

You did not comprehend/understand my points . Different claim - and one for which fault to a greater or lesser extent has to lie with my explanations. No, I understood. I just disagreed. I had thought that I had made my reasoning clear, but it now seems apparent that we are each operating from diff...

Re: How do you handle playing or running a game with noble P

Str/Dex/End can all be explicitly numerically measured and compared - even Int/Edu are subject to comparable measures. As long as the units are consistent between species and cultures, such would have meaning for rule mechanics. Attributes are consistent in the rules across cultures and species; at...

Re: Any good MgT char generators?

Would it be allowable if it had empty tables with only the tables for the Scouts filled in from the SRD as an example, then let users fill in the tables for other services on their own?

This might also make it easier for people to make their own branches of service tailored to their own TU.

Re: How do you handle playing or running a game with noble P

Naturally, I disagree. Nothing wrong in general with those ideas. But consider, they are all special traits of a more general ability to interact and influence others. Just as Str, Dex, and End are special traits of a more general ability to perform physical acts. The importance of this is to provid...

the more complex it is, the more parts there are that break, and the more troublesome it is when it does break, and the more inconvenient the timing when it breaks, and the harder it is to repair, and more expensive to repair, and the harder to find parts, and the more likely it is to have buggy sof...

Re: How do you handle playing or running a game with noble P

Yes - there is where the dual use of SOC is quite, naturally, contradictory. Thats exactly why I chose to use attributes such as ego, rep and social level. They each describe a particular characteristic and can be used to describe an npc's personality in a simple way. high ego and a low rep might i...

Re: How do you handle playing or running a game with noble P

I feel that putting specific definitions for what each social level means would be a serious mistake. Isn't it enough that it is a stat that can be used for dm's in tasks related to social interactions? after all, social level is a measure of the character's place in society aka. the level of social...

Re: How do you handle playing or running a game with noble P

There has been anecdotal evidence that its not in the hands of future writers, however. Rather its in the hands of 'powers that be' which have allegedly been very strict in enforcing conformity with previous editions. So much so, that it has given the appearance of driving a respected author or two ...

Re: How do you handle playing or running a game with noble P

Unfortunately, from the very beginning ( The Kinunir ), Traveller authors have been using the character generation systems to roll up NPCs, which has given us canonical examples of Imperial barons (or close relatives of Imperial barons) who are customs inspectors and enlisted men. It's like having ...

Re: How do you handle playing or running a game with noble P

I'm not advocating that. I'm advocating not accepting the figures implied by the Character Generation System uncritically. totally agree with this. It helps to understand that the chargen does not model the actual populations. It models a very specific subset of the overall population... adventurer...

Re: How do you handle playing or running a game with noble P

I think tying social standing to nobility is a setting issue. It works with the OTU, but might not be appropriate for other settings. I use social standing as a measure of social 'class' the character was born into and lived in before going through the entire career process. Although its not in the ...

The weapon cuts the bonds holding atoms together and whatever you just hit boils away as dust. seems to me that it'd make big explosions.... think of a steam explosion, then think of the same thing happening with a material that is many many times denser than water. so, perhaps the low damage means...

Re: Prime Directive Traveller

Mister Rancke, Seeing as the main topic is about the Star Trek Prime Directive universe, shouldn't this issue be described by Star Trek sources? Therefore... Marines are addressed by their rank. They are not called 'Mister.' All generals, regardless of their rank, are addressed as 'General,' not 'Ma...

Title Any naval officer who commands a ship (titled commanding officer, or CO) is addressed by naval custom as "captain" while aboard in command. Officers with the rank of captain travelling aboard a vessel they do not command should be addressed by their rank and name (e.g., "Captain Smith"), but ...

Re: Apollo 11 & Buzz Aldrin interview UFO filmed by crew

UFO theories can be part of Traveller quite easily. They can give rise to adventure situations such as "intrepid adventurers stumble across unexplainable 'evidence' of aliens." The adventure is to find the actual truth behind this 'evidence'. And maybe there really were aliens.... like an Ancient's ...
