What does ObTrav mean?

Got an itch to scratch: on some old posts on this forum and on several other places around the web, I have come across 'ObTrav', usually preceding some kind of scenario idea. What does it mean/stand for?

Ta,

Dan.

Re: Questions on starship hull points

Thanks for the responses. 'Interpretive dance' describes in a nutshell how I have found refereeing Traveller to be, and I find it helpful to check with others every now and then that I'm not doing the chicken dance (popular as that is on the continent at the moment :D ) after a struggle to keep othe...

Questions on starship hull points

At the end of my last session, the Travellers barely survived a starship combat near the surface of a planet. The opponent was reduced to zero hull points and so crash landed. The Traveller's harrier, meanwhile, only has 8 hull points left (out of a possible 88 maximum), so I ruled that it had suffe...

Re: Pirates of Drinax - GMs thread

I don't know about that Dan. There is a precedent in space opera: We came to know Han Solo as "hawn" in "A New Hope," and then suddenly, in "Empire Strikes Back," along comes Lando and he's "han." You can switch. It's not too late. :) I seem to recall reading that fans were upset about the wa...

Re: Pirates of Drinax - GMs thread

I've been saying Dry-nax, but it does sound like a brand name for paper towel. I think I prefer the short i pronunciation, but too late to start changing now. Never thought of or noticed the lack of a family name for the royal family. Good question. Perhaps the Sindalians and their offshoots have a ...

Re: Some Ideas

The problem isn't whether the traveller rule set can or cannot handle some setting, the problem is that the OP is engaging in a number of things that are 'bad-citizen' posting practices: Uninformative post titles: which provide no clue what to expect when you open the post – "3 things" or "Some ide...

Here in the UK that is key stage 3 physics.
:D :D Had I played more Traveller as a kid, I probably would've done better in the sciences at school.

Re: Sensors in starship combat

The way I read the two tables at the bottom of page 150, EM is a different category to Visual, Thermal and Radar/Lidar.

Re: Sensors in starship combat

Yes, all sensors have Visual, Thermal, and Radar/Lidar. Advanced Sensors add Densitometer, Very Advanced Sensors add NAS. Oddly, though, EM sensors is omitted from that list on page 151. I was thinking that EM sensors are part of Military, Improved or Advanced sensor packages (using the classificat...

Re: question about sensors and stealth hulls.

I would make detecting a ship a routine task (ie, 6+ rather 8+ for success). CRB page 64 lists 'making a detailed sensor scan' as an example skill check and lists that as routine. Also, remember if the Harrier is using active radar itself, then the ship it is using it on gets +2 to detect the Harrie...

Re: Opposed Checks – Need help with rule interpretation

Actually, I'm forgetting vehicle combat. Dogfighting, for example, does use opposed checks.

In personal combat, though, it's just grappling -- not parrying.

Re: Dodging and parrying

That's how I read it. CRB page 72: A Traveller who is dodging will inflict a penalty equal to his DEX DM or Athletics (dexterity), whichever is higher, to his attacker’s attack roll. And CRB page 73: A Traveller in close combat may attempt to parry an opponent’s attack as a Reaction. In so doing, he...

Re: [Pirates of Drinax] GeDeCo's plan

The Treasure Ship adventure also features part of GeDeCo's plan. It's mentioned there that GeDeCo's motivation to scare the neutral worlds into becoming its clients. And I think it's actually the rogue branch of the megacorp at Vorito, acting unbeknownst to GeDeCo HQ (which is based in the Imperium ...

Some replies above mention combat examples, but just to be clear -- combat rolls are not opposed checks, right? I've not been doing it wrong all this time

Re: Opposed Checks – Need help with rule interpretation

This hasn't come up in my game as yet, but I would rule that A 'wins' since A has the higher effect. But I would narrate the result in a way that reflects that both rolls in themselves were failures. For example, if the opposed rolls were to determine the outcome of a sporting contest, A wins becaus...
