Well Vincent, you're taking the words out of my mouth. In practice, we've had feats exchanged in situations as: - the player noticed that he never used or benefits from a previously chosen feat; - the player has a new idea how to develop his character, but that requires a different feat, for which i...

Can't you choose to deal lethal damage with nonlethal attacks at -4 penalty, or does that only work the other way round?

Don't forget Tumble to move without drawing AoOs. Apart from that, I don't think we need too many skills in combat. If you make combat too skill-heavy, you also need to give Soldiers more skill points, or they come out worse. But if you want more, you might want to look at the modifications the old ...

There's an SRD rule for that. Middle age: 35 years Old age: 53 years venerable: 70 years personal maximum: +2d20 years At middle age, –1 to Str, Dex, and Con; +1 to Int, Wis, and Cha. At old age, –2 to Str, Dex, and Con; +1 to Int, Wis, and Cha. At venerable age, –3 to Str, Dex, and Con; +1 to Int, ...

there's just something about it that doesn't sit well with me. The old bromide about removing the confirmation roll, although my co-players don't acknowledge this, is that it works against the players in the long run, as with any mechanism that can produce extreme results. Sooner or later some clow...

You're also forgetting Damage Reduction. If you have, say, DR6, it's much more convenient to get hit 3 times for 10 damage each than once for 30 damage. And anyway, it's kind of misleading to say it would change "nothing except MD", when Massive Damage is pretty much _the_ defining feature of Conan ...

That, and some gamers (not me, though) are only happy when they can buy new splats and sourcebooks every other month. Damned if I know why. However, there is also the question of continued support. For instance, there used to be a Lord of the Rings RPG licensed by iirc decipher and Pegasus. The book...

Pro Tip: when I first ran a Conan game for total newbs, I didn't require them to learn all the rules from the beginning. In combat, they simply told me what they wanted to do, and I translated it on the fly into game terms. That way, in the first few combats we had sand thrown into opponent's faces,...

Upon looking closer at the rule, too, I don't think it was added as an after thought. I think it was added to allow the 5' step to happen on your opponents turn when you are dodging. Well, the basic Dodge mechanism has been the same in 1st Ed, while Dance Aside only appears in 2E. The 5' Step limit...

That seems to be the reason.

You can still attempt trips while wielding any other weapon, but you have to do it as an unarmed attack (think of it as foot-sweep), and if you fail you may be tripped in return.

What I think would make sense is to allow trip attempts with a shield.

Your interpretation is correct. Basically, you need the extra square just as a token space, to indicate that you have some space left to breathe. It's a bit abstract, owed to the rather rough 5' resolution. The Dance Aside maneuver however reverses this abstraction and takes it literally. I suppose ...

Oh, and what is Craft (domestic)? I see that Rutcrana, on pg. 89 of Cities, has that skill. I have no idea. If it referred to housekeeping it should be Profession, not Craft. But generally speaking, I don't give much about splat books anymore. I've seen just too many blunders in them. Which also ap...

Yes, pretty much. There's the caveat that you're supposed to engage only in "light activity" during the days, i.e. no forced marches, no fighting, no other physical strain, but you can travel normally. That's also written somewhere. Besides, we agreed in our group that orgies and parties count as "f...

First off, I agree with everything Vincent Darlage said. +1. That said, just to add a couple of cents, since I happen to be a linguist. Historically people were quite apt at understanding different dialects. It's hard to find a current example, since language has been very much standardized in most ...

Alright, then I misread at first; I didn't realize the question was about background skills. So I concur: background skills give free ranks, which count against the rank cap. So our Cimmerian Barbarian with Str 18 would have to invest only two of his initial skill points to get a total skill mod of ...

Profession: mostly flavour. The only practical application I can think of is using "Profession:Sailor" to run a boat, plot a course and navigate it, etc. Apart from that, "Profession" can be used as minor roleplaying spice. Successfully using "Profession:Cook" might give you a reaction bonus when yo...

Re: Question about Max Skill Ranks

In fact, you are all wrong *points finger* you and you and you! The Class Skill RANK maximum is always level+3, so 4 ranks at 1st level, yes. But ranks are _only_ what you buy with the Skill points given by class, e.g. "4+INT". Any other bonuses, including but not limited to racial bonuses...

I might restrict which classes are accessible if they want to MC at all. If the PCs never go to sea, for example, nor go into the steppes or deserts riding, I would not allow Pirate nor Nomad, respectively. Seems just a matter of verisimilitude. That might be an option. Anyway, a character should a...
