EDIT: after first posting this, I discovered a mistake in my analysis. The post has been edited accordingly. @Clovenhoof: I'll bet on soldier anytime. a highlevel soldier would have Reflexive parry as it's a staple, so acting first would change nothing, and greater mobility would be pointless with h...

Yeah, in our game "Akbitan" is just "Masterwork"; it takes specially refined steel but that exists in various places all over the world. But that can still be used as an adventure hook.

That looks pretty nice. When I gm a Conan game, I still take the D&D XP charts as a guideline for combat XP. Let's compare that method and yours: What is a bit unclear is how combat XP are distributed. Do you split the XP for defeated enemies evenly, or does each character only get XP for his own ki...

Yeah, D&D becomes a real bitch at high levels because of crap like that. Conan is considerably more manageable due to the lack of magic. However, I have to say I also never played on level 20 either. Just took that example because you said you felt the Barbarian was only strong at low levels. Barbs ...

Well, if I remember correctly, our DM also rolled just once for all guards, but let's have a look what happens if you do it by the book: What are the chances of each individual guard, really? Is Listen a class skill for Soldiers? In AE it is not. I also can't see most guards being so clever that the...

every class receives no bonus for either parry or dodge at first level. each time you take a new class, your defense will not go up that level. That can be easily planished. No class has a better DV progression than 3/4, so you just need to take your levels in increments of 4 if you want to optimiz...

Well as you said, they want to clear their stocks. If they also reduced PDF prices, they would lose hardcopy sales. So it makes sense to make the books cheap and the PDFs not.

Well, that would defeat the purpose of Take 10, if you disallow it whenever a failed check would get the character in trouble. That is almost always the case, or you wouldn't need to roll. On the contrary, it specifically says "Taking 10 is a safety measure". So generally I tend to say, as long as t...

Heh, I was just about to suggest letting the guards Take 10 as well. ^^ Seems fine to me. _Maybe_ since they are guards, and finding intruders is their job, they might actually have the Alertness or Skill Focus: Listen feat. (Probably not both if they are low-level.) And now I'm wondering: can the p...

You can't aid another in listening. Here's how you do stuff like that -- it's actually not so obscure: each PC rolls a Move Silently check. The lowest check sets the target number / DC for the guards. Then each guard rolls his Listen check. But don't forget all the DC modifiers! +1 per 10' distance ...

Okay, then you don't want to run a heroic game. Seems a bit odd to me, since I think that's precisely what Conan is about. Heroes like Conan, Achilles (nice example), maybe Leonidas etc. set the benchmark at level 20. Level 20 is about 4 times as powerful as level 10. So there's a lot of margin betw...

Well, whatever your players enjoy and you can handle as GM. But I advise against keeping the PCs on too short a leash. Getting those new class boons and feats and trying them out is a major source of fun, especially in D20 games. In our last game, we started at level 3, then went up fairly quickly t...

I say it depends on what class you start with. You have to be aware that classes in Conan aren't all balanced or equal. - The Barbarian is clearly more powerful than any other class. So if you want to play a Barb, it's best to stick with it and not dilute it with anything else. - The Soldier on the ...

Of old has it been custom and good tradition to advance a character from 1st to 2nd level at the end of the first session (or adventure, which should not take longer than two sessions at most). :) That is, if you start on level 1 at all. In our D20 games, we've long since decided on starting level 3...

Well, maybe the amount of ability damage dealt is too uber. Tbh I never saw it in action. Once I planned to take it with my Barb, but then the GM totally threw the grappling rules overboard, so I went a different route.

Maybe nerf it to: reduce chosen ability by 2 on a failed Fort save.

It's powerful, yes, but it comes at a price. 2 feats prereq (Improved Unarmed Strike, Improved Grapple), BAB 8+, and you need to grapple in order to use it, which makes you a sitting duck to everyone else. Awesome in one-on-one fights, too risky in larger battles if you ask me.

I "only" read the book, some 14 years ago. 12th century. About the construction of a cathedral in England (in the fictitious town of Kingsbridge in the as fictitious county Shiring). Also a civil war that takes place at the time, but the protagonists aren't very involved in that. It's quite a good r...

Yes, that's the thread I was referring to. @S4: I'd say you're mixing up some terminology here. You're having a problem with Suspension of Disbelief concerning the healing rules. You might say that this maneuver -- or rather its consequences -- is an "immersion breaker". "Game Breaker" normally defi...

It's also a question of how well the player knows the system. If they are a newbie (to the system, setting or even class), they can't possibly know all the workings and synergies, and are sometimes also misled by cool-sounding feat names - as Vincent also has mentioned. In such a case (although I us...

re To The Hilt: I think this maneuver it not particularly well written, but I never regarded it as a game breaker. It's not exactly desirable to have your weapon stuck in an enemy. The worst game breaker in the core book is actually, imo, Two-Handed Fighting in general, and the Bardiche (and Greatsw...
