Re: Special / Critical Success and CMs

I know what you mean about the effect of CAs vs skills and I see your point about reducing the number of CMs potentially reducing the impact of a CA imbalance. It would do that somewhat but at the cost of re-balancing combat back towards HP attrition. It does mean that heavily armoured tanks with 2-...

Re: Special / Critical Success and CMs

As an idea this does pop up from time to time. The idea of CMs though is that there aren't supposed to be hits that 'just do damage.' Once you have hits that just do damage then the game becomes focused around Hit Point attrition and fights can take a lot longer to resolve. The idea of CMs is that t...

Re: Arms of Legend (either version)

I have the PDF. Haven't gone over it in detail but as far as I can tell it includes the errata sheet from RQII. It removes the naval warfare section (due to it making no sense) and divine enchantments. The alchemy and enchantment section, is otherwise, I believe identical to RQII. If there are any o...

Re: Martial arts combat maneuvers

I was thinking about this recently and was sure someone had written something for it already. As it turned out it was Loz himself.. http://runeunderwater.blogspot.com/2011/04/martial-arts-combat-maneuvers-for.html That s by Loz? I remember seeing it and thinking how poorly thought out and inconsist...

Re: Grimoires

Here are some Grimoires I created, based on an old game: Dragonquest , published by SPI. This is a .rtf file. It includes some of my notes on logic of grimoires, etc. As you will probably be able to tell from the various sorcery order notes, I use a Fantasy Earth setting for my game. Make changes a...

Re: Was this REALLY Beta Tested ?

Quick minor but important point. Don't roll attack damage before parry. Game doesn't work that way. Order is. Attack Roll. Optional Defense roll. Did someone get a CM? Pick 1 or more CMs. Roll location (if needed) Roll damage (if needed) You always pick CMs before rolling for location and damage.

Re: Was this REALLY Beta Tested ?

Well I can say that yes it was beta tested. I was involved in the very last playtest cycle and there were definite changes to the final text from the playtest docs. That said, I agree with some, but not all of your issues. I think they break down into several types. Editorial failures. A&E and Necro...

Re: Why 21?

Somewhat off-topic, but what exactly is gaining SIZ in game terms? Bulking up like a body builder? Getting fat? Also, in Ye Olden Days there were some disadvantages to being large (ie having a high SIZ score). Iirc your Stealth skill was penalised, and maybe some other things I can't remember. In L...

Re: Single Weapon Style vs Dual Weapon or Weapon and Shield

I think the intent of combat styles is a bit buried but there's a clue where in unarmed it says that basically unarmed sucks but at least you can use it "interchangeably with other combat styles." What that means to me is that you can't normally mix combat styles. What mixing means is undefined but ...

Re: Single Weapon Style vs Dual Weapon or Weapon and Shield

Just to make the same point again. Combat styles aren't balanced mechanically against each other in the same way that muskets and AK74s aren't. The only thing to prevent a player from picking the optimum combat styles for the character is the setting and the skills the character can learn. It's unfo...

Re: Why 21?

RQ3 had min+max rolls but that was rather horrible for anything with adds. E.g. STR 3D6+18 gave a a maximum of 57. My own house rule has long been maximum roll plus 1 per die plus 1 for any adds. *Probably* should be the case that 4D6 is about the maximum variance for a normal, adult specimen. E.g. ...

Re: Modern Legend

On the narrow point of Evade. As written in Legend, Evade like many skills has multiple functions around manoeuvring in combat, dodging out of the way of stuff, throwing yourself out of harm's way and so on. Using it to make yourself a harder target to hit is perfectly in line with the various uses ...

Re: Martial arts

One way to do this might be to accumulate points "aweSome points" for successful uses of the skill in a combat against the same person. If you hit, even if you get parried then you gain some awesome. Then you could have some CMs gain you awesome while some spend it. That way, the leaping dance of ul...

Re: Ranged Attacks vs. Cover

I also know only just enough to guarantee making myself a fool of myself. I would be tempted, if using more free form combat styles to call "shield wall" part of a formation fighting combat style. So the style might include "gladius, pilum, big shield, shield wall." Your combat style then includes, ...

Re: House Rule Advice: Combat Maneuvers on 'tied' results

When playtesting RQII I tried it out and didn't like it. Fairly long story as to why combat doesn't have "tie-breakers" on opposed rolls. Main problems are: massive slow down of game because every roll ends up having to choose a CM. Also it means every roll means having to consult dice to see who di...

Re: Legend for just $1!

As said, I'm using Adobe Reader X and didn't have any problems. There was a problem with the initial upload but once it was corrected by Mongoose I redownloaded it and all my problems went away.

So it's unlikely to be an issue solely with Adobe Reader X.

Re: Houserule: Parry/Evade at half skill when out of actions

And likewise, if not every fight needs to be to the death, then outnumbered players can yield and then ransom themselves, or gain the opportunity to escape, or be rescued in a subsequent adventure... Yeah, I totally agree with the "not every fight is to the death" philosophy, but when your campaign...

Re: Spirit Magic for Legend

It's good to see the Shamanism article included, but as I recall it was part 1 of a 2 part article. The following month included a bestiary of sorts of spirits. Any chance that could also be converted and included, or at least converted and released for seperate download? It is worth pointing out t...
