Re: D&D 3E to MG Traveller Conversions

The Urzaeng subspecies of vargr (p33 of Alien Module 2: Vargr) might also make a good starting point for a "space orc."

Re: The Physics of Space Battles

Y'all are missing the very most important reason why Traveller ships aren't all spherical. That is that there exists a very large cross-section of gaming consumers for whom artwork is important. Read the reviews on pretty much any rpg product, and you'll find just as much review of the product's art...

Re: Influence System - Help Please

The Trade Table is a 3d6 roll and gets a raft of modifiers. You'll find it in the latter chapters of Book 7. Now, the way I understand Influence, what you can do is tack your +3/-3 as an additional modifier to everyone's rolls on that table for that world for that specific item for six days. Thus yo...

Re: Free Epic Campaign - The Pirates of Drinax

Impressions from a quick skim of Part 7 (lunch break isn't long enough for more than that and the redoubtable KingsideBishop wouldn't want me to make a careful study, I'm sure): > Good "transitional" adventure. This is where players move into the endgame of the campaign, and the adventure does a fin...

Re: How to play an Uplifted Dolphin?

For an example, see the movie Dolphin Tail. Took most of the movie for the smart humans to figure out that Winter wasn't smashing every prosthesis they tried against the wall of her tank because the mechanics were wrong: she couldn't tolerate the "sock" that was lining the attachment point.

Re: How to play an Uplifted Dolphin?

If you've already worked out contragrav support, then you don't really need any kind of "fishtank" arrangement; dolphins and other large marine mammals need the water because their organs are designed for a bouyant environment. The CG takes care of that, so as long as whatever kind of "suit" you giv...

Re: Relative power of skills

Since most games involve gallivanting independently, I consider ship skills of great importance - Pilot, Astrogation, Engineer and Gunnery at the top. There's always a chance for planet side conflict so Gun Combat seems necessary. The sixth one I leave open as there are so many situations that call...

Re: Mongoose Traveller Extended UWP

When a system generator needs a spreadsheet to use, I think it tipped the scale to too big! Oh I disagree completely; I hate when my 70's-era game about faster-than-light travel and Scottish Highlander samurai space-lions gets the physics wrong. Leaving sarcasm aside for a moment, I can comment fro...

Re: Failed divert power roll

I commend to your attention pg 141 under "Divert Power" which reads in part: If insufficient power is available the drive does not function. I interpret that as no jump, but unless it was a horrible roll (snake eyes) you can try again. Under routine conditions, it is no big deal. When someone's chas...

Re: What type of game are you running?

In the past I've run the classic "traders trying to make ends meet" kind of campaign. Once, I ran a low-tech military-style Traveller/Morrow Project crossover that turned out to be a whole lot of fun. Currently I'm playing in a PbP Pirates of Drinax game, and am giving more and more serious though t...

Re: Detection of 20 watt trasmitter at 11 Billion miles

Amatuer radio enthusiasts routinely make intercontinental contacts under QRP conditions which break down to thousands of miles per watt of transmitter power using rudimentary antennae. So the news, while impressive, is not particularly surprising. They know what frequencies to camp, which direction ...

Re: Lack of 300 ton ships?

One possible reason might be that 300 tons on the drive performance tables hits a sour spot in that in many cases (for sure in the case of Jump 2, possibly others but I don't have it in front of me) the drive required for a given performance is the same as for a 400-ton ship. Some (and you know who ...

Because it completely changes how and where they operate. I still maintain that the victim isn't really concerned about the semantic distinctions. Re: The Pirate in the Traveller Universe

In frontier areas (not talking 3I setting) pirates are more likely to be privateers. Just like in the age of sail, they MANY times more numerous than unaffiliated pirates. Having safe ports is critical to longer term survival. While that's accurate as far as historical commentary and the implicatio...

Re: Trojan Reach: Hierate/Imperium Trade Route ... why not E

Exe is described in one of the Drinax axdventures ("Treasure Ship" I believe, but since I'm one of your players I'm scrupulously refraining from rereading them). It is an automated refueling station staffed by a dozen or so GeDeCo employees. I would deduce that there is little to no system defense (...

Re: More affordable starships

Well, for one thing, it would change the tone of the game radically. Players in the classic Traveller campaign got up to the hijinks they did because they were desperate to make their crushing mortgage payment. One of the tropes seen frequently in the introductions to the classic adventures was some...

Re: New to Third Imperium - Any Recommendations?

Another quirk about the 3I that makes it so beloved by us grognards, but actually helps newcomers get a handle is this: each sector or region (owing to the speed of interstellar communication and the autonomy of the sector-dukes) has its own flavor. Life on the Solomani Rim is far different from lif...
