Starter ships

Have you ever been in a Traveller group where the crew, fresh from character generation, quailed and/or flailed at the prospect of paying a high ship's mortgage? Or are you likely to be one in the foreseeable future? If so, and you would like a better starter ship (to build your way up to glory from...

Re: How to get it started

First, ask the players if they're up for restarting the campaign. Second, ask the players if they're up for restarting the campaign. Third, keep in mind that this forum can be of roughly zero help for such questions, and it is your players' opinions that matter here. If the players are good for just...

Re: JTAS errata

JTAS 6 , page 2: http://wiki.travellerrpg.com/Ognar_Subsector It's "Ognar", not "Ogna". I (the author of that part) told them that months ago. (It was originally "Ogna", then it came up that that name was being used.) Glad to see someone else noticed. :) Fortunately, they may be accepting revisions...

Re: Ship Combat: The Particle Barbette

I'm going to assume that the Harrier's particle barbette is sufficiently well shielded that the 'close to the firer' text in item 1 does not apply to crew on the Harrier (although the prospect of dosing the PCs with 1-200 rads every now and again *is* amusing) and the implication of the 'simple to ...

Re: Fuel Expenditure from Surface to Highport

It just occurred to me recently that the majority of the fuel in a modern-day shuttle is used breaking the planet's gravity well, which is why Highports are way more efficient than Downports for point-to-point destinations. For modern tech - in Traveller parlance, pre-gravitic low-TL low-efficiency...

I suppose its theoritically possible, but if it was that easy everyone would be doing it. Possible does not mean easy. ;) Space Trolling 101: Tell some lies about our pretend jump bridge, hide in space and watch people die. Re: Weapons for a special-operations ship

i have a sniper ship design with a rocket drive booster. if you don't match its weapon range, you don't get to shoot at it ever unless you pull some kind of ambush. Indeed, but this is not common. Also, this is one of the cases that missiles are for. Not common? In the OTU (or at least in the Third...

Re: Is there a list of systems that require jump N to reach, or ones that require a major detour for lower jump?

It really comes down to how hard the thirty two point six light year hop is. If it's an absolute, you have to build hubs equidistant from each other. T5 allows 9-10 hexes. not sure if it goes to 11. Their rules are hard to read. 10 maximum, and technically always. 1-9 is possible if you aim to inte...

Re: Is there a list of systems that require jump N to reach, or ones that require a major detour for lower jump?

Traveller map will calculate the most efficient route for J-1 through J- 6 if you give it two systems and the jump number. It'll even do Hop-1. Just tell it you're doing J-10. I haven't tested, but I suspect this will support any similar drive in Traveller: J-20 for Hop-2, J-100 for Skip-1, et cete...

Re: Weapons for a special-operations ship

I take it more that 6G is a general standard. You certainly can build faster; it's just that this is usually not done (precisely because ships have to choose between other things). 9G maneuver drive plus 16G reaction drive yields 25G...likely only used by smallcraft that need to cross large distanc...

Re: Weapons for a special-operations ship

The ships in HG is just carbon copies of ships from CT Fighting Ships, they make no more sense under MgT2 rules than they did under CT rules. Right. I take that as an unwritten rule that 6G is the max for starships. Otherwise, you have to redesign damn near every ship you come across in a campaign....

Would it be possible to find some large ice-bearing body in the empty parsecs between Byrni and Browne, and set up a jump bridge (ice mining and fuel processing)?

Re: Apocalypse package & Library class Archive Ship

the main new capability the apocalypse package brings is the ability to synthesize anagathics, so the same person can guard it for centuries if need be. That's actually quite significant (the inability of previous systems to manufacture those) and should be mentioned in the main article. I couldn't...

Re: re: Hop Drive

Interesting. That means for a hop to be useful you also need a jump drive and an extra week to pin point a destination. Or, always plot to intercept a gravity well when you're going less than 10 parsecs. I assume TL 17 makes other systems more efficient to cover the engineering and fuel though cost...

That entirely depends on what you intend to do with it. A scout, a free trader, and a corsair are optimized for different missions.

They cut some of the article, including the bits you wanted to see (such as how it feeds). I'm asking them if that means I can post the missing info to the wiki, or what. As to venting: concentrate heat into the gas, then purge the gas, just like any emitted coolant. How hydrogen sacs counteract wei...

Re: military ship naming convention?

A non-canon TU could have a lot of fun with this... Hospital ships - Suture, Needle, Scalpel, Clamp, Dressing, Tourniquet? Who says it has to be non-canon? All it'd take is a ship class only built by one group at one or a small set of shipyards, which group has some whimsy when it comes to naming t...
