Re: Passenger Ship logistics

Phavoc, your points are well taken regarding errors in the text. Proofreading is not Mongoose’s strong point. As for the “justification in the rule is . . .extremely weak”, this argument, which is a matter of opinion, can be used anywhere in the rules, for any rule you don’t like. The ruleset is des...

Re: Referee's Briefing

Whatever is done, I’d prefer to see it a little more detailed, including personalities, so the information presented can a be more “plug and play”. The existing briefings have great ideas, but still require a lot of prep.

So instad of a lot of ideas at a high level, fewer ideas but more detailed.

Re: Passenger Ship logistics

Well, you aren't saying I am crazy, which you means you believe most of them are actually valid
That’s quite the leap of logic. You didn’t answer my question. Using your logic, I’ll take it that you don’t actually like Traveller, since you did’t specifically state otherwise.

Re: Passenger Ship logistics

Rules have a tendency to be ambiguous, with multiple possible interpretations; pick one and stick with it. They don't if you write them properly, but RPG companies tend not to have technical writers on their staff, and they're expensive to hire. People often say that conciseness and correctness mea...

Re: Passenger Ship logistics

Assuming a ship makes regular runs, hydroponics wouldn't make much sense for bulk food (wheat, corn, etc). Smaller products, like fruits, vegetables, spices, etc, could work since they are generally tastiest when fresh. The other issue is going to be foodstuffs that aren't normally available in the...

Re: Spacecraft Operations - Running Costs

To compare with Traveller you have to add up all crew compartments, such as berths, heads, galleys, messes, wardrooms, lounges, gyms, corridors, etc. Much of that would be considered “Common Areas” which are in addition to stateroom or barracks space. I’d be curious to see how much “lounge space” p...

Re: Spacecraft Operations - Running Costs

Since we’re now quibbling over what constitutes a modern design, here are images from the USS Gerald Ford, the largest warship ever built, christened in 2013 as the first of its class. Crew are stacked three high in berths of 36 people. Junior officers are 4 to a room. Puts into perspective just how...

Re: Spacecraft Operations - Running Costs

Keep it simple. 1 ton = 1 dton. No conversion required. Doesn’t actually make sense, but neither do a lot of rules when you peel them back. So don’t peel them back if you don’t have to.

Re: Spacecraft Operations - Running Costs

As for increasing the frequency of Jumps, I think the 2 Jumps a month is pretty standard. In the Pirates of Drinax campaign they mention a Jump rate of a Jump every 10 days, but this is moving a convoy of ships, not trading. Not even sure how much the rate can be increased. Assume 7 days a Jump, so...

Re: Spacecraft Operations - Running Costs

The easiest way to move that needle is to reduce the downtime between trips. Up to the GM to decide if this cuts into passenger or cargo volumes. A regular (i.e. advertised) route and schedule, assuming good cargo and passenger volumes, could by very profitable using the tables, even without spec tr...

Re: Spacecraft Operations - Running Costs

Agreed. The cost of hiring a ship should factor in what running cost of a ship, including its mortgage payment. Mongoose Economics very a similar issue to classic traveller economics: a jump-1 free trader can be extremely profitable on jump-1 main, because the free trader is cheap and has tons of ca...

No. Make yourself useful by creating the charts yourself and post them here for everyone's benefit. We can wait a few weeks if you’re busy.

Re: Pirates of Drinax - GMs thread

Good stuff. Random thoughts in no order: - Drinax is very cash poor. They’ll need to look elsewhere for their sponsor. - Ordering good equipment, arranging for it to be stolen and delivered to Utea, and then showing up with second hand equipment from Utea might be a tad suspicious. There are other h...

Re: Ship Combat: The Particle Barbette

If you’re so unhappy with the game, the rulebook, and the fact that Matt has a few rules on behavior in his own space, perhaps you might be happier limiting your participation even more. Or perhaps make a positive contribution by telling us how you adjudicate various ambiguities in the rulebook, and...

Re: New Adventure Start: Flatlined

All good points, Linwood. It can be done. It does, however, take a lot of work to not make the other players feel like sidekicks. And running a good campaign is hard enough as it is. Drastically uneven characters is an unnecessary risk in a campaign.
