Traveller as a Spaceship Modeling Hobby

Honest question: how much do any of us actually USE the deckplans of all the ships we create and share? In my experience, my own attention to the arrangement of rooms vastly outweighs the amount of game time where any of it matters. (Even in occasional boarding situations, if all the bad guys are in...

How Do You (Logically) Prevent Players from Skipping Payments?

(cross posted from Reddit/Traveller:) I've been thinking a lot recently about the structure of space opera's universes, and how one of the big decisions any creator makes is, "How close, practically speaking, are big civilizations to each other?" Other questions--like, how does FTL work and how many...

Thanks so much for checking the numbers! Now I feel more confident in moving toward a deckplan. Yes, I'm serious. (Thanks again!)

100 ton ship with Jump-1, Thrust-1...and a 51-ton ion cannon bay

I thought it might be funny if the characters had the option to purchase a very light ship with ridiculously heavy weaponry: something overcrowded, barely powered, and impressive-looking on the surface, but deeply impractical in actual combat. (Back story: a rich kid with more money than sense deman...

I allow my players to roll the die for a skill and then decide which table to use. Gives them a bit more freedom to direct their character’s growth but still keeps some randomness in the process. Seems to work pretty well.
Why have I never thought of this before? You're right! It works nicely!

Thinking of getting rid of Astrogation, Medic...and ship computers in general

Maybe I'm crazy, but some of the premises of Traveller seem not only wrong, but literally unthinkable. Just based on what we already are seeing now, for example, I have a very hard time picturing a future where we don't have little nanites in our bodies constantly fixing things...and it certainly se...

Re: Imperial characters playing Pirates of Drinax campaign

I don't see any problem since no one is actually on active duty. Everyone is a free citizen and can place their sympathies wherever it makes sense to. And I think being through an imperial military is just as likely to make you cynical about their aims as it is to keep you patriotic.

Arguments for & against point-buy chargen

I was listening to The Grognard Files podcast last week, and they were discussing Traveller, and something one of the hosts said crystallized a problem I've always had with Traveller's lifepath generation system: "At the start of the adventure," he said (I'm summarizing from memory), "someone hired ...
