Re: Work on comprehensive index

I've also compiled a list of the careers, ships and scenarios from MGT1 - it is not an index as such but rather a list of which book those items appear in.

I'll post a link to it when I've tidied it up a bit.

Re: The Mercenary Kickstarter is Now Live!

I agree the British army (and even more so Navy and air force) have fallen below some sort of critical mass threshold. However just looked at the US Army rank breakdown which for generals is rather less silly (1:1400 personnel rather than 1:400) but pretty similar as regards officers to enlisted men...

Re: The Mercenary Kickstarter is Now Live!

The British army currently has over 200 generals for under 80,000 troops - a ratio of 1:400 and has 13,000 officers to just 66,000 other ranks or 1:5. As for NCO's there are 18,000 Sergeants and warrant officers and 22,000 corporals and lance corporals to just 25,000 actual privates - and that is wi...

Re: The Mercenary Kickstarter is Now Live!

The foot guards and honourable artillery company still have lance sergeants - I rest my case... It is a good point that the British give more responsibility to lower ranked NCOs than the Americans - part of which is down to our only having having the four (or six counting warrant officers) non commi...

Re: The Mercenary Kickstarter is Now Live!

I was referring to the draft book having 'lance' as a unit name rather than to the rank. A lance was in the late middle ages the basic military unit consisting of one knight or man-at-arms and his entourage which generally included one or more archers, squires, pages and so on. However the lance as ...

Re: The Mercenary Kickstarter is Now Live!

a) Great! b) I do however teally wish you could work out a way to reduce the pdf only level price as £45 is for me (and I know not everyone is on a restricted income so I do mean just me) such a steep entry point that I will have to wait to see how many of the stretch goals are reached before commit...

Re: The Beyond is a mess

Actually thinking of Pandemonium subsector in Vanguard Reaches - a dozen worlds literally named after Nazi SS divisions.

Which was just tasteless even for 1981.

Is that the one with a subsector full of worlds named after SS divisions?

Re: Colonization history of the Third Imperium

I still don't understand the problem.

Canon tells us Mora was settled by LSP in 60 and not that much else.

We also know that Mora remains the sector capital and still a hugely important world a millennium later.

Ergo there must have been a jolly good reason it was settled in the first place.

Re: Colonization history of the Third Imperium

The GURPS Sword Worlds book has a good campaign outline for an exploration and colonisation project which could be easily drawn on for an easier milieu. And the spirit of Traveller when faced with something that looks implausible is to make something up. Why settle Mora? Maybe it had a vital and rar...

Re: Colonization history of the Third Imperium

If you look at the SF material that inspired Traveller colonisation tended to be driven by private enterprise - traders forging new trade routes, idealists and heretics refugees seeking new worlds to settle etc. and Only when something worth absorbing has been established do empire's move in. So Mor...

Re: [Pirates of Drinax] Admiral Darokyn's backstory?

He doesn't really need to be an Admiral - the Trojan Reach is a small ship setting where a small flotilla of close escorts can be a significant force. So quite a junior officer if he managed to lead a mutiny on a single Gazelle class close escort and ended up on Theev would soon be significant playe...

Re: How does a traveller computer work, and apart from skil wafers what does it do that we cant do today?

Personality.

May or may not be a true AI but the higher TL the computer the more apparent personality it has.

And even an entirely passive and reactive higher TL computer can still feel like it has a personality of its own.

Lucy in Killjoys for example.

Re: Real World - why people + computers make best combination

Definitely. If I wanted to represent current medical training I'd go for a 4 year degree in Life Sciences with a minor in Medic that represents a pre-med degree and then a 4 year Med School term that gives Medic-3. However Medical really should be a cascade skill with First Aid, Surgery, General Med...

Re: Real World - why people + computers make best combination

A Traveller with level two to three in a skill is a skilled professional in that field. A Traveller with level four or five is probably both well-respected and well-known in his field. They're interning; somewhere before the end of the series they graduate to three . Except US medical interns have ...
