Re: Do the Imperium know about Theev?

How can the Imperium (or at least the commanders of whatever fleet defends the Trojan Reaches) not know about Theev? It is more of a question of can a few pirate gangs do enough damage to imperial commerce for them to act on this knowledge? The answer to which is obviously no - until the point that ...

Re: Passage and Freight Costs table

Not as simple as that as every increase in jump drive requires not just an increase in power plant but in fuel carried - and thus a reduction in available space for cargo and revenues. Alternatively make it a +50% increase per jump - so 1000, 1500, 2250, 3375 etc. Or apply logical supply and demand ...

Re: Pirates of Drinax: Game of Sun & Shadow

It also raises the issue of why would the Imperium attempt to destroy a new buffer state between them and the Ihatei hordes? (who canonically will c.1117 overrun the Trojan Reaches anyway). Yes the piracy would be an annoyance but they already tolerate not one but at least two worlds full of pirates...

Re: Thinking of getting rid of Astrogation, Medic...and ship computers in general

We know already there is a nobility and that there are an underclass who never qualify for pensions so yes it is already a tiered society. However if the pension system works as per RAW it is remarkably egalitarian - a 6 term navy Admiral gets the exact same basic pension as a 6 term Able Spacehand ...

Re: Passage and Freight Costs table

Simple solution: stick with the CT default values for passage and freight and multiply by jump distance.

Re: Hydrogen to water

I always assumed that the jump bubble just negates all the normal laws of physics (which is what it is for) and anything that goes in maintains same temperature etc until it comes out again? Plus it seems that all the stuff about starships (and by implication jump cargo nets) being covered with lant...

Re: Passage and Freight Costs table

[/quote] Yes, but at the end of the year you will find that the rolls have evened out, so that on average you have received the average price and all the flux rolls gave basically no effect in the long run. The freight system is a very crude system for Free Traders (and not major trade routes) that ...

Re: Is there a place that is culturally cybernetic?

TL12+ for wafer jacks. at TL10 just about all you can get from the core book is a subdermal comm implant and armour. CSC gives a lot more options, but you may be entering the realm of Cyberpunk rather than Traveller with some of them. Unless the core book has changed since I downloaded it the Tech ...

Re: Is there a place that is culturally cybernetic?

But what I can't understand is why everyone in TL10+ societies is not wandering around with neural comms and wafer jacks in their heads. They are also not free. A wafer jack might cost a year's salary for normal people. That is of course quite possible to afford, but not something you pick up on a ...

Re: Passage and Freight Costs table

The idea that every ship charges exactly the same price for passage and freight is kind of ridiculous. Even if we accept the MGT prices as the basis (and I am convinced that the J6 values are very wrong) surely some randomiser like a T5 flux roll (2D-7 x 10% to give a value from 50% to 150% of base)...

Re: Hydrogen to water

Something I've been contemplating is the practicality of just hauling ice in a jump cargo net and reducing it to water while in deep space. Ica has a density of about 0.9 so 1 Dt ice contains 0.9 Dt water and can be converted to ~1.4 Dt LHyd. The problem is that ice is not very stable in space. It ...

Re: Arguments for & against point-buy chargen

And of course I don't really mean punish but rather 'hey those skills you keep saying are useless? here's a scenario where they save your life'. And an SF game can and should include scenarios where you have to battle against extreme environments. MGT2 has for instance High and Dry where nobody fire...

Re: Arguments for & against point-buy chargen

But Traveller does privilege those skills that are useful for fighting and trading in space.

Unless you go out of your way to play a Citizen and take 'useless' skills you very probably won't have any.

Re: Some Ideas

You are basically throwing out one of the oldest plots in space opera and expecting people to flesh it out for you? Traveller Han Solo doesn't rescue the princess - he hands the old madman who thinks he is a Jedi, the silly farmboy and his annoying droids over to the first imperial patrol ship he en...

Re: Is there a place that is culturally cybernetic?

Exactly! What I'd love to see is a big campaign pack set on a Pop 10, TL 15 world with literally gravity-defying spires, teeming crime-ridden undercities and which focuses on the everyday impact of high technology and clones and chimerae and uplifts and augmentation and the role played by androids a...

Re: 3 things

I think your constant stream of questions reflect that whatever game you think you are playing has gone far, far beyond the capacity of Traveller to model it. From the beginning default Traveller is about a small group of people with maybe one small starship having small-scale adventures out in the ...

Except even under the original trading rules you could get rich very quickly even if you had quite a small stake to start trading with. And original little blacks and early supplements only Traveller was also such a small ship universe that a 1,250 ton Kinunir was a battle cruiser and a 5,000 ton tr...

Re: Navy/Marine records across different systems.

At a high enough TL there is surely no practical limit on how much personnel data you can hold on a big enough computer. So any navy ship of any size would probably have full records of all living current and past personnel from at least the sector fleet and probably the latest available Imperium Ga...

Something I've been contemplating is the practicality of just hauling ice in a jump cargo net and reducing it to water while in deep space. Doing this pretty much any ship with J2+ could slowly and painfully cross The Great Rift in J1 hops - and it is surely much cheaper if more laborious and risky ...
