Re: What's Traveller5 like?

Not sure about the Wiki but Traveller Map already has some data posted. In the drop down menu where you can select map style, etc, you can also select the Milieu or era and the map displays it. The Marches in 1900 look very, very different. Alell is still Amber Zoned. That's harsh. The "Fly in ambe...

Re: Converting a Freighter for combat use

Hangars and Docking spaces take multiple turns / minutes to launch or recover vessels and during this time can't expend thrust or fire weapons by the launching / launched craft. ( Would affect jumping out as you'd need to finish recovery operations.) Upgrading weapon systems would be a more flexibl...

Converting a Freighter for combat use

Hello Folks, If you had to convert a heavy freighter over to escort duty, as a hull that can be modified faster than it can be built at a ship-yard, would you make the effort to do so? Take for example, a 1,500 dTon hull that has three separate holds, two that are 60 dTons each, and one that is 200 ...

Re: 2300AD speed using stutterwarp

I couldn't wait for 2300AD 2E. Using the 1E rulebook is interesting. Does anyone know what the speed actually is when using stutterwarp? I know it goes 7.7 light years. And it takes 2 days to 2 weeks. But how do I determine how many days it takes to go 7.7 light years? I mostly want to covert this ...

Re: Alternative to drop tanks

That and the new changes are, I think, haphazardly breaking canon concepts. That in itself isn't a bad thing as changing the game system is required if they expect to continue to sell newer versions. But breaking canon needs to be thought out and a determination made if breaking it makes (a) sense,...

Re: Alternative to drop tanks

Haha, I assure you there were no cruel intentions behind the preview, I merely wished to give you a glimpse of what the book says on the matter :) <snipped stuff> Out of curiosity, what are the other two things you want/need? I never assume evil intent on the boards - but I do tend to try and get p...

Re: Alternative to drop tanks

Thank you for the sneak peek Annatar, I could almost HATE you for that... *teasing grin* I owe my wife a steak dinner with my first paycheck assuming I get the job I'm hoping to get (just completed an interview! Yee Haw!). I'm permitted to spend some money on Traveller Stuff with the second check, b...

Terraforming in a nightmarish way...

As I consider the "Ancients" and what they could do, I got to thinking - what could the Third Imperium do with its current TL 15 technology. The thought that sparked this process was based on an Old Larry Niven novel, in which a man uses a ship to approach a given velocity, use a black hole as a sli...

Re: Alternative to drop tanks

As pointed out, the idea about drop tanks seems to have issues, but why not examine the practice to see what is involved? What happens when we have an enemy fighter of 10 dTons nearby when a ship attempts to jump away? Anything? Ok, let's turn it into a 40 dTon boat instead of even a 50 dTon cutter?...

Re: Supporting Details: Registration Numbers for hulls

On structured ID codes: A thing to consider is that computer systems are more secure and efficient when they use random numbers and just look up the data for it in a database, rather than encode it into the number directly with digits for origin, year and so forth. An example of this is the unique ...

Re: Supporting Details: Registration Numbers for hulls

One has to wonder how the civilian version of hull classification types would run. There is a lot of detail on hull designation for military ships - but very little on the others (including the Scout ships). How is it that the Scout Service has only a VERY few ship classes as compared against say, t...

Re: Alternative to drop tanks

Note too - that despite drop tanks being introduced in Traveller in the early years, few ships ever used the Drop Tank per any of the supplements that were put out. Off hand (and I'll bet I'm wrong since I don't have ALL of the books from ALL of the systems to be sure!!!) - I can only think of one s...

Supporting Details: Registration Numbers for hulls

Hi Guys, Just wondered if any one on this forum has ever created a standard system for determine what a registration value should be for any given hull in their campaign(s). What I'm doing a little at a time, here and there, is coding for my own enjoyment, an application that will let me (in text mo...

The Traveller Companion has a chapter on gas giant operations and fuel skimming.
Alas - without a job - not a viable option.

Re: Alternative to drop tanks

Now you know why I wondered what the atmospheric density would be at the point of skimming. If it were me trying to come up with a formula of some sort, it would look something like this: Volume collected = Time * Density * compression effect The compression effect would have to be the size of the i...

Re: Alternative to drop tanks

Ok, what does have to happen for Wilderness refueling to work? 1) sufficient volume of hydrogen and/or Dirty Hydrogen has to be ingested to fill up a given volume of space. 2) time spent in the "run" per GURPS TRAVELLER (which I largely suspect is taken from other prior sources) states in part... Re: What's Traveller5 like?

What I use my Traveller 5.0 for, and what I appreciate about Traveller 5.09... First off - when I received my two copies of T5 (Hard cover) - I was prepared to run the game as its own system. I purchased several of the Imperial Starbust dice and was eagerly looking forward to a new era of Traveller....

Re: Alternative to drop tanks

You'd have to plumb the intakes pretty cleverly to accommodate that and also the ability to do it with water. Airflow at 300 or whatever kph would play merry hell with aerodynamics. May even cause the airflow to create an air wall in the intake and stop most of the airflow. Just out of curiosity - ...

Re: Alternative to drop tanks

The specific information on cracking water... " Hydrogen fuel in Traveller is liquid hydrogen, not hydrogen gas, so 1 dton (14 cubic meters) is actually 1 ton of hydrogen. 9 cubic meters of water weighs 9 tons and can be cracked for 8 tons oxygen and 1 ton hydrogen. " Got that from a Gent named Anth...
