Re: Alternative to drop tanks

Also if the tender is larger than the jumping ship, the refueled ship will need to accelerate away from said tender. Not a big deal I suppose (what’s the 100-diameter distance of a 10,000 dton tanker?) but something to think about. That's why you use long hoses, or a tank at the end of a tether. At...

Re: High Efficiency Batteries for Jump

Sitting quietly for a week would work fine for a scout, or military recon vessel. Jump into the outer system, sit quietly for a week gathering data, then microjump a third of the way around the ecliptic, rinse/repeat.

Alternative to drop tanks

Seems like if you have the fittings for drop tanks, you could receive the fuel from another ship if you had nice long fuel hose/tethers. You fuel them up, as they slide into the jump bubble the tethers disconnect and withdraw, so as not to interfere with the jump process. Seems more controlled than ...

Re: High Efficiency Batteries for Jump

You could also, by monkeying with the economics a little bit, have jump-bubble based technologies for civilian markets, much more expensive, and maintenance intensive jump-grids, and collector technologies co-existing in the same universe. Three different ways to solve the problem, used by different...

Ship computers, subject to Prototech/Retrotech rules?

The title says it all. In High Guard, specific reference is made to how ship computers use exactly the same rules as portable/hand computers from the Core book. They already use the specialized computer rules to account for the /bis computers to handle higher jump software, but it seems that you cou...

In MgT1, the range is "rifle", so 500m or so?

Hlaulrakh (Gravity Spear, TL14): technology breaker?

I recently ran across the Hlaulrakh (Gravity Spear, TL14) in the MgT 1e Aslan book. I don't know if it's in the Aslan material in Pirates because I'm in it as a player, so haven't read it. This device seems to either break some technologies, or introduce them in a very advanced and refined form well...

Re: Question on the 100D jump limit

The speed governor idea doesn't work. Travel times in-system have always been given as acceleration/deceleration time, with no coasting assumed. If you really wanted to do something like this, you would want a heavily armored freighter of some sort (for structure), loaded with metallic ores, refined...

Re: What is "canon" these days?

Good question. AnotherDilbert has the right of it. (he got his entry in while I was formulating mine) My opinion may not be popular in this forum, which is in large part self-selected for people who care about canon. But, I'm going to share it anyway. This does come up over and over. Canon only real...

Re: [Traveller Art]Patrol Cruisers under fire

Beautiful artwork!

Cool factor notwithstanding, seems like it would be very expensive, and wasteful, to armor that spindly thing. :P

Re: Neural Comm vs Neural Link

Except that a Neural Link allows the use of physical skill based expert systems, so it would seem to have more than read-only access to the CNS.

Thoughts?

Neural Comm vs Neural Link

What are some more ramifications of the neural link vs. the neural comm? Computer level? Does the neural link represent a wired nervous system, or just tapping into the motor centers of the brain? Could a neural link be hijacked to remotely control someone’s body? Could you program a sequence of mov...

Re: "any DM from the supplier"?

I'm just surprised that people still have the myopic approach of "It doesn't make any sense, but that's what's written in the book, so that's how it works". The whole purpose of the rules is to be a tool to help adjudicate a (fictional but we're presuming it follows recognizable rules) situation in ...

Re: "any DM from the supplier"?

I've always viewed that as being the skill of the broker on the other side of the transaction from you. Absent that component, the deck is always stacked in the players favor, and it is far too easy to turn a few thousand credits into millions in a very short period of time.

Re: Boarding actions

The stuff in the Drinax books is more about how you can successfully maneuver your ship to pirate another, advice about avoiding escorts or military craft, how fast you should steal their stuff and get on your merry way, etc. Not much on the actual boarding activities though it would have been an e...

Re: How many skills to describe a competent character?

The number of skills, and highest skill levels, that players want to have, are directly related to how the GM runs his game. If difficult rolls are called for all the time, and every roll has significant negative consequences on failure, then the players are going to want all the skill levels, stat ...
