Godwin's law : "As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Hitler approaches 1." Re: Brainstorming a Ringworld adventure

The ringworld might be a partial Matrioshka Brain with enough computing resources to easily simulate all the worlds of Charted Space and all sophonts living on them, it could also compute certain fictions such as Jump and Maneuver Drives as well. Lets say also the ringworld simulates itself in its ...

Re: Brainstorming a Ringworld adventure

Sounds like a great beginning. They might never leave. Are you setting this in the OTU or some variant thereof? Broad strokes. The players I'd be running this for have never played (and may have never heard of) Traveller, so I'm not going to get deep in the weeds of 3I politics, etc. Finding the Co...

Brainstorming a Ringworld adventure

Larry Niven's Ringworld is one of my very favorite novels, and lately I've been thinking about a Traveller adventure or mini-capaign set on a ringworld. Here's what I've got so far: The Travellers are approached by a liaison from a small university. The institute is in possession of some First Imper...

That's one way to run it, but the rest of us will be running in science fiction settings, rather than thinly disguised 21st century First World nations.
That thing that just flew over your head? That was my point.

Re: Players and their armor.

In great Cthulhu's unholy name, get it through your head: no modern chief executive, whatever his or her title, would be allowed to go into battle. They are simply too important to the state to be permitted to appear on a battlefield in person. Even President Trump, if he wanted to lead an MEU into ...

Re: Players and their armor.

I guess you didn't see his dual with Yoda in Revenge of the Sith, and he was killed by Darth Vader, and he could shoot lightning from his finger tips. Yoda snuck into the Senate and tried to assassinate Sidious; Sidious didn't go looking for him. Getting killed by Darth Vader was very much against ...

Re: Players and their armor.

I'm not sure the Moot has the authority to overrule the Emperor if the Emperor decides go into battle in a meteoric assault capsule leading a battalion of Marines. Whether the Moot has the legal authority is a... ahem... moot point. No politician worth his pork barrel is going to let an enemy be ab...

Re: Players and their armor.

His government wouldn't let him. It's as simple as that. The Emperor is far too valuable to ever set foot on a battlefield, no matter how big his cojones. The Parliament (can't remember what it's called off the top of my head) and the military leadership would find a way to keep him safely in the pa...

Re: Players and their armor.

What if your character is a witness to a mob hit, and you testified in court and now the mob wants you dead, and you ask for permission to wear heavy armor, and the police say no, we'll protect you, but you suspect some of those cops are being paid off by the mob, and you don't trust them to protec...

Re: What tech level are these?

No. No, it is not. All those ships still had to be built. I'm going to attribute this to posting while sleepy. Anyway, you don't have two timeships or two crews, you have one timeship, temporally displaced. The ship that has not yet traveled must now travel, in order to become the ship that travele...

Re: What tech level are these?

Actually a Time Drive could be a replicator. A time ship is programmed to go back in time 1 round unless 999 identical time ships suddenly appear and if it sees 999 identicakl timeships suddenly appear from the future, it doesn't go back in time and now you have 1000 time ships. That is a replicato...

Re: What tech level are these?

Stargates are TL "Plot Device." In the show, they're Ancient technology which (IIRC) even the Asgard can't replicate.

I would be extremely leery of allowing replicators. They destroy the economy.

Re: Ringworld setting: A world without spaceships

Two things. Well, three. The first two are SENTENCES and PARAGRAPHS. Walls of text are not reader-friendly. convert one astronomical unit into Solar radii. An Astronomical Unit is 93,000,000 miles, divide 432,376 by this number and we get 0.0046492043 The third is that you desperately need to check ...

I think the propulsion systems should be kept as real and as close to real physics as possible If I disagreed with this statement any more strongly, the force of my vehemence would awaken the frost giants and bring about Ragnarok. Traveller (and, indeed, virtually all science fiction) doesn't need ...

Re: Why is there a Jump Fuel requirement?

Mongoose Traveller is the only version to suggest that a portion of the fuel is used to maintain a bubble of hydrogen around the jumping ship while in jump space - this is a fanon concept from years ago that has somehow been adopted and is not in T5 nor MWM's definitive Jumpspace article in JTAS 24...
