Re: Setting up a new Colony

A lot but because of its size a lot slips between any iron grasp of control. That's why the Imperium gives a lot of leeway locally and war is sometimes the steam valve. Much security is local or maybe by subsector/sector forces. The Imperium may control the space between planets doesn't mean they h...

Considering war is tolerated
Come again? If warfare among member worlds is tolerated, then what, exactly, does the Imperium do?

Re: Imperial slavery ban & robots

I was under the impression that one of the few Imperium-wide laws was a prohibition on slavery. What laws does the Imperium enforce?

Holy ****, Mongoose needs to do an entire sourcebook on this stuff.

Imperial slavery ban & robots

Traveller establishes that machines can be fully conscious. Does the Imperial ban on slavery include a prohibition on owning conscious machines? Is this a local matter (for a given value of "local") where the law varies from one jurisdiction to another? If a robot lodges a protest at the duke's cour...

Re: Suggestions please

Through hand-waving. Basically. As in real life, a significant tech advantage can easily be decisive. If the Uber Empire (please tell me it's not really called that) is at TL24, while the Imperium's core worlds range from TL10 to TL13, the Imperium gets steamrolled in a general war. They simply can...

Re: [NewTraveller] Questions: Char Gen Careers and Skills

(1) Is it allowed for a Traveller to successfully choose and pass university more than once (maximum of three times/terms)? Or is a succssful entry in university a once in a lifetime thing prohibiting re-entry in university in any other term afterwards (same for military academy)? (2) If a Travelle...

Re: NPC Rogues Gallery

So... all your NPCs are bowls of tapioca pudding? Seriously, I don't see how you can avoid using tropes. No matter what you do, there's a trope for that. I forgot to add cliche characters to that list. But it's just common sense not to use them in game sessions. That's not really an answer. O.o

Re: Suggested enlarged Fleets

In great Cthulhu's unholy name... TBH, I think the PCs have outgrown the adventuring life. Managing 84 starships is a full-time job for five owners, plus several hundred (thousand?) employees, on top of the crews of the actual ships. Have an Imperial naval battlegroup come after them for slavery, le...

Re: A Traveller Miniatures Game?!!

Here is a quick scale comparison. Left to right: 1. Reaper Minis Nova Corp soldier, 2. Mongoose Street Judge (both "heroic 28mm"), 3. RAFM TNE RC Marine in light battledress and 4. Denizen Ventauran (the latter two in "True 25mm" scale, same size as Grenadier original 25mm castings). Note the diffe...

Re: Electronic banking & currency

Verified letters of credit. I assume these are a little more sophisticated than a sheet of paper with the right person's signature. I'm picturing public-key cryptography: Johnny Traveller is going from Deneb to Procyon. The Bank of Deneb gives Johnny a file, or maybe even a piece of hardware contai...

Electronic banking & currency

Is electronic banking possible over interstellar distances? Is it possible to transfer money from one system to another without converting it into cash or goods? What do cash credits look like? Coins, bills, "plaques," certified credsticks? How common is it for worlds within the Imperium to have the...

Re: Missing tables in the core rulebook?

That refers to a format used in previous editions. It doesn't have information about map hex notation, or the incidence of gas giants.

Missing tables in the core rulebook?

On page 214 of the core rulebook, at the bottom of the first column, under Star Mapping: "The system hex format table shows the coding and placement of information about worlds within a subsector." Further on, at the bottom of the second column under Gas Giants: "As indicated on the system contents ...

Re: Nobility & bureaucracy at the sector and subsector levels

To what degree is the structure of government standardized throughout the Imperium? Put another way, how much leeway does a sector Duke (or a subsector Duke, for that matter) have to organize "his" government?

If you want to make it quick and easy, say three 400-ton patrol corvettes.

Out of curiosity, by "freelance" do you mean "mercenary?"

Nobility & bureaucracy at the sector and subsector levels

MegaTraveller Imperial Encyclopedia indicates that a duke is "associated with a subsector or sector," while a count is "associated with two or three worlds within a subsector." If, for the sake of argument, a given sector is ruled by a duke, is it then appropriate for subsectors to be ruled by count...

Best sourcebooks on the Imperium

I'm looking for more information on the Third Imperium, particularly the workings of the Imperial government and military, the interplay of Imperial and local laws, relations with and between member worlds, and day-to-day life. What titles should I be looking for?
