Re: Ringworld setting: A world without spaceships

Two things. Well, three. The first two are SENTENCES and PARAGRAPHS. Walls of text are not reader-friendly. convert one astronomical unit into Solar radii. An Astronomical Unit is 93,000,000 miles, divide 432,376 by this number and we get 0.0046492043 The third is that you desperately need to check ...

Re: Why is there a Jump Fuel requirement?

I think the propulsion systems should be kept as real and as close to real physics as possible If I disagreed with this statement any more strongly, the force of my vehemence would awaken the frost giants and bring about Ragnarok. Traveller (and, indeed, virtually all science fiction) doesn't need ...

Re: Why is there a Jump Fuel requirement?

Mongoose Traveller is the only version to suggest that a portion of the fuel is used to maintain a bubble of hydrogen around the jumping ship while in jump space - this is a fanon concept from years ago that has somehow been adopted and is not in T5 nor MWM's definitive Jumpspace article in JTAS 24...

Re: Star Princess-class

Reducing the armor from 5 to 3, swapping the drives from M1 and J3 to M2 and J2, and scrapping the high staterooms brings my cargo capacity up to 197.8 tons from 131.

Side note: the cargo crane calculations are needlessly awkward. 2.5 tons plus 0.5 tons per 150 tons of cargo space? Really?

Cargo crane & loading belt

Please see the entries in High Guard, pgs. 39 and 40.

How do these two pieces of equipment interact? Does one obviate the other? Additional details would be appreciated.

My Great Rift boxed set arrived!

It's extremely swanky, and Islands in the Rift (the only adventure I've had time to read) looks like fun.

Re: Some Ideas

Let me ask you this: what narrative purpose does this "Uber Empire" serve in your campaign? Because it sounds a great deal like a Mary Sue GMPC that's never allowed to lose, and that's not going to be much fun for your players.

Re: 3 things

1) What do you mean, "a version?" I'm not familiar with the Star Ray, specifically, but 200 tons is either a very heavy fighter or an armed courier (not even a frigate). Something 22 times that size won't be "a version" of it, it'll be a completely different beast. 2) No one says humans evolved from...

PCs as instructors

Is there a rule for PCs teaching each other? As in, can a PC instructor give a bonus on another's training EDU check?

Advanced drive technology: fiveskip

I based this on the FTL drive described in one of my favorite space operas. Extra credit if you can identify the work without Google. 8) Fiveskip The fiveskip accesses a different spatial domain than standard jump drives: fivespace, a five-dimensional volume that enables FTL travel in the same manne...

Re: Is it enough medics?

Double-checked my figures and they're all wrong and while I can't remember exactly the minimum number of medical personel on 1 of their ships is, by both royal and government degree, at least 6 out of every 100 onboard personnel have to have had medical training equivalent to A Medic DM of at least...

Re: Passage and Freight Costs table

It's a zero sum game. The further you jump, the more volume is devoted to get you there in a week. That means per tonne, there's more costs in terms of maintenance, operating, personnel, depreciation and presumably mortgage that have to be covered. You're implying that the costs given on the table ...

Re: Passage and Freight Costs table

This issue was raised when the rules were being designed. AnotherDilbert is correct - the reason for the cost changes was the pricing of the ship and it's operating costs. V2 of the rules radically changed the costs of the underlying machinery for ships, thus the extremely high pricing. Basically d...

Passage and Freight Costs table

Help me make sense of the Passage and Freight Costs table, core book, p. 207. The cost for high passage over one parsec is Cr8500. Across two parsecs, it's Cr12,000, an increase of Cr3,500. From two to three parsecs is an increase of Cr8,000, and from three to four is an increase of Cr21,000. From f...

Re: Introduction and a question. Traveller crunchy?

I've always understood crunch to refer a certain "realism" in the game Not necessarily realism, IMO, but more of a simulationist (as opposed to a narrativist) bent. Crunchy games try to simulate the game world as closely as is practical, like Shadowrun, rolling dice for nearly every action. Less cr...

Re: Poor wording in the Trade chapter

You ever watch those films where the rich woman turns up with a large number of suitcases. That might fit within fourteen cubic metres. This is pretty much my thought process. There are two points: first, anyone paying for high passage is, by definition, wealthy. Sure, you'll get the occasional asc...
