Re: Imperial slavery ban & robots

I'm not sure of the canon, but IMTU the Imperium controls space; member worlds can run their own affairs as they see fit. So while slavery on a particular world can be legal, the "employment" or transport of slaves thru Imperial space would be illegal. A lot of worlds do a lot of things that the Imp...

Re: Electronic banking & currency

I assume these are a little more sophisticated than a sheet of paper with the right person's signature. I'm picturing public-key cryptography: Johnny Traveller is going from Deneb to Procyon. The Bank of Deneb gives Johnny a file, or maybe even a piece of hardware containing a file, encrypted with ...

Re: Nuts and bolts of the Imperium (gov't - how it works)

My view is the Imperium has dominion over interplanetary and interstellar space. Period. It has NO authority over the planets that exist within Imperial space, except insofar as it retains sovereignty over starports, and makes rules regarding interplanetary/interstellar trade. The Imperium exists (i...

Re: Social Media as Story Element?

One of the things I'm really liking about the Traveller setting (especially compared to the just-like-the-real-world global, instantaneous real-time communication of Star Trek, Dark Matter, The Orville and so forth) is the absence of FTL communication. Yes, on high-tech worlds, you'll have instantan...

Jumpspace - What Does It Look Like IYTU?

I've been thinking about this. When a ship jumps, it enters into a tiny pocket universe, I'm told. There is no possible communication with anyone or anything outside of that tiny pocket universe. I also remember reading (somewhere) that the hydrogen "fuel" required for a jump is actually used to "in...

Re: Starship Hull design

I can't really see any practical reason for building a beanstalk in an environment where antigrav and M-Drives are available, even if they have to be imported from offworld. A lot of nations in Africa are leapfrogging over the cost and effort of stringing thousands or millions of miles of telephone ...

Taking Damage

"Let's split up." "Good idea. We can do more damage that way." --Ghostbusters "Let's split up." "Good idea. We can take more damage that way." --Countless PCs So, if I'm not mistaken, in Classic Traveller, the first hit you took in combat all went into one stat. If that stat went to zero, you were k...

Re: Modding (or managing) Combat

Even if the local jurisdiction allows open carry, this might not apply to visitors. Yeah, I'm working up a Traveller campaign background now, and some of my planet descriptions explicitly include a note that the Law Level is X...for the bigwigs. Y for the clanking masses. Z for Travellers. And even...

Re: Modding (or managing) Combat

There are other ways beside armor upmanship. One thing the XCOM game always made clear is USE COVER. Maybe your opposition is dumb enough to stand in the open shooting but the characters are supposed to be the bright ones.... except that one over there who put a 3 in INT. Unless you're playing Star...

Re: Ship's Locker: Out of the Closet

3D printed guns (and other items) today are a far cry from what actual atom-by-atom nanoassembly will make possible. The only limit on durability then will be the material limits of the elements involved.

Re: Rule of thumb for passengers as cargo

My understanding of "coffin hotels" is that there is room enough in a coffin to sit upright. By comparing to what appears to be a doorway at the left edge of the picture, each module seems to be about 1 m tall on the outside, lets say 90 cm on the inside. To sit upright I need 90 cm headroom and I'...

Re: Rule of thumb for passengers as cargo

4 people per dT is something like this: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/6/6d/CapsuleHotel.jpg/511px-CapsuleHotel.jpg You get to choose between a bunk or a place to sit, but not both... I really doubt regular starships are built with that much life-support capacity; for 16 peopl...

Re: Adventure Idea - The World... in space!

I've seen The World, up close and in person. It was docked in Portland, Oregon for a week a few years ago. It was unbelievably huge. I still don't really understand how it got past the several drawbridges on the Willamette--it's that big. Yeah, the space-going version of that would make a good setti...

Re: The Type-Y kind of Yachts we should be seeing

Seriously folks, GIVE your players and the very low level noble player- character a destroyer fully armed but with wood panel appointments, a spa and luxury staterooms and let them go trading. Rule Zero. Not just wood paneling. Hardwood decking (over the actual plates, no doubt), with expensive thr...
