Re: 2300AD - Any News?

2300AD is, as I am sure you are aware, based on the extension of the Twilight:2000 background. It's an alternate history based on there being a conflict at the tail end of the millennium. The newer Mongoose version of 2300AD updated this to be less explicit about the causes of Twilight, leaving it ...

Re: Brainstorming a Ringworld adventure

Sorry Tom , but the maths doesn't work in your or Isaac's favour. There is no known material that can withstand the stresses on a rotating ringworld of Niven's design - Isaac even says so in his video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yk-Ivm9MhYs&t=27s at 9:34. All of his solutions require handwavium...

Re: Brainstorming a Ringworld adventure

Ringworlds are not possible with known physics an material science limitations. Everything you mention as a solution to building a ringworld requires handwavium at best, unobtanium at worst. You can not build a ringworld by just using more matter - 1000 times you say - as the mass of matter would b...

Re: 2300AD - Any News?

There is still a Twilight in 2300AD, so whilst not technically a 3rd world war (or maybe it is) there is still a 100 year or so mini dark age. Also, Alcubierre warp drives have a ton of problems with them (not the least of which is potentially requiring a mass of exotic matter - material which as f...

Re: G-force induced loss of consciousness

Several SciFi book have dealt with this, most famously The Mote in God's Eye and Infinite War. Sustained G's above 2G and people can't really move around. Above about 10G and you pass out. G-suits and Acceleration Couches might make 6G sustained possible with a LOT of discomfort and training (thus ...

Re: Brainstorming a Ringworld adventure

To make a ringworld you need a superscience-ly strong material - in the setting this is called scrith. It is dense enough to protect the ringworld inhabitants from the exploding galactic core... Pak protectors of the original species have genius level intelligence+, they invented scrith and made it...

Re: G-force induced loss of consciousness

Problem is I can imagine a gravity trap, some hapless sole steps on a booby trapped grav plate which then subjects him to 100-Gs of force which then squashes him into a bloody fleshy human pancake! Do you want to see that happen in your role playing game?

Re: Brainstorming a Ringworld adventure

The hardest thing for me to swallow is that of an alien race building this thing for humans to live on, this is why I don't go the alien route in my version of this thing. Niven makes an alien ringworld, with gravity and day length just a little bit off, but with the primary inhabitants being human...

Re: Brainstorming the Centauri Ringworld

The ringworld will not be gravitationally stable if it doesn't orbit within the same plane as AC-B. Just like all the planets in the old Solar System rotate in approximately the same plane (within a few degrees), the ringworld must rotate in the same plane as the other star in the system. While it ...

Re: Brainstorming a Ringworld adventure

"If the Ringworld was sectioned off on its inner side, there could be any number of different environments as well." One of the Man-Kzin Wars books had a zoo world featuring huge sectioned off environments based on many sampled worlds one of which was the Kzinti homeworld. A human whose ship had cr...

Re: Brainstorming a Ringworld adventure

Larry Niven's Ringworld is one of my very favorite novels, and lately I've been thinking about a Traveller adventure or mini-capaign set on a ringworld. Here's what I've got so far: I'm not sure if you're still following this thread since everything went all meta crazypants but looking over the ear...

Re: Brainstorming the Centauri Ringworld

Here is the size comparison chart showing the Centauri Ringworld vs the Solar Ringworld. Since Alpha Centauri A is brighter, the Centauri ringworld is bigger. https://orig00.deviantart.net/fed0/f/2018/199/9/5/ringworld_by_thomasbowman767-dchl5cu.png Under the floor refrigeration creates climates tha...

Did not High Guard cover the Navy Career? There was a book called Scouts which also covered System generation.

Brainstorming the Centauri Ringworld

http://astrologyking.com/wp-content/uploads/centaurus-constellation.png This is the Constellation Centaurus, where the Centauri Ringworld gets its name, this is not an actual grouping of stars together, they are only seen that way from the Earth, the most famous member of this group is also the clo...

Re: Brainstorming a Ringworld adventure

Depending on how old you want it to be (perhaps it was created by a pre-Ancients species) any amount of materials or technologies could be found to have accreted here. Maybe it was built 100 million years ago, and cannibalized a secondary, or two. Maybe it was built from another solar system that w...

Re: 2300AD - Any News?

Hey there, The new 2300AD has been completely re-written from the ground up, and is currently undergoing editing. We did consider having the core rules in the book, but it was growing too large! There are 281.46 years to 2300 AD. With no World War III, the World would be a radically different place...

Re: Why no career books?

There are associated third party publishers who have obliged. You can create your own career paths, dungeon master and party acquiescent, but the official and semi official ones tend to keep potential megalomania in check. An easy variant to permit the exchange of skills acquired at the time of dic...
