Re: Hop Drive

1. Do hop drives exit exactly 32.6 light years from the point of transition? Hop drives can't make jumps of less than 10 Pc, but is still kicked out of jump by a gravity field (T5.09, p336). With a max range of 10 Pc and a min range of 10 Pc, it will always jump 10 Pc, unless otherwise constrained,...

Re: Hop Drive

If it's relativity or quantum mechanics, don't bother trying to understand it with common sense, you have to do the maths. If I would take stab at understanding it, it would be that the rotating system is (in the right rotating frame of reference) a steady state system, so no propagation of a change...

Re: Hop Drive

Yes, that's what I don't understand. If it takes 8 minutes for the current position to propagate, yet it's not lagged by 8 minutes, then what's happening? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speed_of_gravity#Background Two gravitoelectrically interacting particle ensembles, e.g., two planets or stars mov...

Re: Hop Drive

You probably want both jump and hop drives installed and fuel for each. An overshoot would almost always land you in deep space and that roll is hard to make. Rolling 15 or lower on 10D is almost 0.01% chance! Fortunately, MgT2 has an easier roll (14+), quite doable with a very good astrogator with...

Re: Hop Drive

Hop drives can't make jumps of less than 10 Pc, but is still kicked out of jump by a gravity field (T5.09, p336). So you can aim for a closer star and have the jump terminate at the 100D limit. If you, by sloppy astrogation, miss the star, you will travel the full 10 Pc. Only Jump drives (not Hop dr...

Condottiere wrote: So exactly, how much fuel is expended per hop?
According to T5, a Hop-1 drive has the same size, cost, and fuel consumption as a Jump-1 drive, so 10% per Hop-1 (=10 Pc).

Re: Apocalypse package & Library class Archive Ship

I can't remember anything in canon that says we can't build mobile factories. It's just that factories in general are not detailed in Traveller. I tried making mobile shipyards in beta and it worked, but it was expensive. Probably cheaper in general to ship the finished product, than to ship the ent...

Re: What remains powered on a ship after a powerplant failure?

When in doubt, check CT. Doors: Sliding panel doors are set in partition walls. They are not airtight and will open at the touch of a stud (if power is on), or by concerted effort (if power is off). Locks on sliding doors are for privacy only, and may be easily broken with a prybar or other tool. lr...

Re: Where is the non-nuclear EMP?

I'm having trouble finding one of these things in the Traveller rules. Certainly Mongoose CSC has nothing of the type that destroys instead of jams. Small stuff, but CSC, p119 & 140. This grenade unleashes a burst of electromagnetic radiation that does not harm living tissue but causes unshielded e...

Agreed, that would be simpler and avoid the concept of using external cargo as a damage buffer.

Re: Converting a Freighter for combat use

As it stands - I've a few more ship classes to work on for use with the campaign, including a floating dockyard type ship used to repair jump drives where destroyer class hulls are in need of such repairs. To the best of my knowledge, aside from GURPS TRAVELLER, there doesn't seem to be much guidan...

Re: [Rules] Questions regarding damage

That is not my understanding. I think that a subsequent critical hit hits the same location results in a final severity level of max (new severity, last severity + 1). So a Severity 3 followed by severity 5 results in a severity 5 hit. Yes, that is correct. The general ( old severity + 1 ) presumes...

Re: Converting a Freighter for combat use

Best I can come up with is extra armor is allowed but it adds to the overall displacement and you can't remove internal displacement to balance. You can rearrange internal components such as taking adjacent cargo hold to expand engineering to add more powerful engines to balance greater displacemen...

Re: [Rules] Questions regarding damage

5. If a single damage score under the Sustained Damage Rule equals for example 25% of the ships original hull, is it treated like one or like two Severity 1 Critical Hits? My understanding is two crits. This leads to "crit ripple" of small craft, so you may want to limit it to one sustained crit fo...

Re: External cargo mounts?

And no maximum volume limit - ... Implicitly there is a limit: You have to have a drive performance of 1 or higher, otherwise the ships in effect becomes a station. At some point the external cargo will risk interfering with the jump bubble; I tend to use Jump Nets to make sure the jump bubble is e...

Re: [Rules] Questions regarding damage

1. Melee (unarmed): Do kicks, punches and grapples deal stun damage? Not as far as I can see. You need the Stun trait to inflict stun damage, Unarmed does not (p116). 2. Melee (grapple pg 75): Is the strength DM added to any or all damage results from grappling? Yes, I would call that a Melee attac...

Re: External cargo mounts?

The second option would make for a very flexible ship, able to function as a fast, long range courier or heavy cargo hauler depending on current need. Quite, but this is not really for Free Traders. Since external cargo must be loaded in orbit (or on an airless moon), it is not suitable for the mar...

Re: External cargo mounts?

I assume only actually carried cargo affects drive performance: A ship’s Thrust and jump capability must be recalculated when using external cargo mounts, using the combined tonnage of the ship and the external cargo it carries . So a Scout-like ship with external cargo mounts, but no external cargo...
