Re: WW1

Yea world war 1 is around the start of modern guns, and before that is dodgy, but the thread title is WW1 and I think it's relevant.

Re: WW1

World War 1 and 2 naval guns were not that dissimilar. There were some advances in AP shell design. British 15" from 1915-1965; 880kg shell at 800m/s to 35km, theoretical rate 2/minute https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BL_15-inch_Mk_I_naval_gun German 15" from 1940; 800kg shell at 820m/s to 36km, theore...

Re: New Adventure Start: Flatlined

Again with the hyperbole. Again with the snark, without offering any thoughts of your own. Its okay, we’re used to it. If you've played the Ars Magica RPG, you'll be familiar with handling mixed power level parties. The premise of this game is super powerful wizards with sidekicks and minions. Each...

Re: Ship Combat: The Particle Barbette

Formally, it refers to the use of state power to restrict speech/expression/content. Informally, it will often be used to refer to any perceived restriction. Just wait until you end up having to deal daily with someone who insists on doing this with any question that begins with, "Can I..." Other w...

Re: Ship Combat: The Particle Barbette

I am sure there would be less traumatised children if that game was different. :-) Would the game be any better if the die and how to roll it was specified in detail? Monopoly sets come with dice, so we can take that as a dice specification. You could play monopoly with a backgammon dice if you wan...

Re: Ship Combat: The Particle Barbette

If you’re so unhappy with the game, the rulebook, and the fact that Matt has a few rules on behavior in his own space, perhaps you might be happier limiting your participation even more. Or perhaps make a positive contribution by telling us how you adjudicate various ambiguities in the rulebook, an...

Re: Ship Combat: The Particle Barbette

Since I introduced Monopoly into this discussion (regrettably), I only used it as an example of game that is not "badly broken" by the lack of specific definition of dice and how to roll them. Not as an example of a brilliant game. I am sure there would be less traumatised children if that game was...

Re: Ship Combat: The Particle Barbette

One of the aims we have with our games (which Traveller is not best suited to when first starting out, but becomes so the more you play) is to make them 'invisible' during play. If you can play a game without thinking about the rules, then you have that social situation you mention. As soon as you ...

Re: New Adventure Start: Flatlined

This is slightly confusing. Some make a big fuss about honesty and trying to win to protest what they see as dice cheating. Here the rolls are unquestionably legitimate and still the issue of high stats continues. Can someone explain to me what exactly is going on, and what the real problem is? Do y...

Re: Ship Combat: The Particle Barbette

Put another way, and I am quoting another games designer here (of the World Famous variety): "If we have a rule where we can write one paragraph and eliminate 90% of misunderstandings or write four paragraphs and eliminate them all... we will write one paragraph." That makes good sense, but then th...

Re: Ship Combat: The Particle Barbette

It never stops amazing me what people find unacceptable. I find almost everything acceptable, because anything that introduces new physics is untestable, and all untestable claims are equally strong (in that you can't rate them for implausability as the rating system replies "unknown" for all of th...

Re: Ship Combat: The Particle Barbette

That particular description is cartoon physics at its best... and is totally at odds with how plasma and fusion weapons have been described in earlier editions. Scrap it and go back to a more sensible description such as the one in original LBB:4... There is very little in this game that isn't cart...

Re: Does a term at academy count as a term for mustering out?

Voluntary re-enlistment after 1 or 2 terms away should be fine and you should be prioritised above new conscripts. You're trained, and you want it. The roll to go back in is probably close to automatic success, unless you did something bad or they're full (not likely in this setting). edit: Assuming...

Re: Ship Combat: The Particle Barbette

Not to drive this thread further into the (off-topic) weeds, but what about electronic random number generators? Dice-rolling towers? FFG has a dice rolling app that is legal for organised X-Wing play. There's no mention of dice towers in their rules so it would be down to the marshall on the day. ...

Re: Ship Combat: The Particle Barbette

Most miniatures games have some regulation that covers dice and rolling. Not any ruleset I have seen, but I haven't been looking for decades. I'm not sure I would want to play in a gaming culture that has to have specific rules about not cheating with dice... Monopoly is a terrible design. The game...

Re: Ship Combat: The Particle Barbette

I'm not actually. Rulebook is badly broken. No role playing or board game I have seen have ever tried to exactly define what a die or a die roll is. Nor have they tried to define the exact meaning of the word 'is'. If you consider that badly broken, I'm afraid most games are badly broken, including...

So the target takes damage even if the attack misses? Yes, strangely enough: Radiation: When a Radiation weapon is fired , anyone close to the firer, target and the line of fire in-between the two will receive 2D x 20 rads, ...
