Re: Hop Drive

You aim for where you think the destination will be. Because orbital mechanics are predictable (so yeah, steady state). The Jump duration variance (168 hrs + xD hrs) easily accounts for the ‘eight light minute’ conundrum.

Re: Are we playing two different games?

Yeah I only ask for rolls if I can’t decide the outcome for some reason, or if the anticipation of the roll will add meaningful tension.

With D&D or ICRPG however, playing with the polyhedrals is part of the ritual for us so we see a lot more rolls in those games.

Re: Growing a System Economy

The new government needs to really focus on Ag exports but also developing natural resources from the asteroid belts. A handful of subsidized ships to work that 5 parsec route would be a serious leg up; high quality foodstuffs, fibers, animal products, etc along with (eventually) ores from the belts...

Re: First and Second Edition

I also mix 1e and 2e materials quite freely, I especially like the old Spica Publishing Career Books.

I haven’t seen it but I understand the 2e Traveller Companion offers more char gen options, including quick build templates like Belter, Marine, etc as well as a point buy system.

Re: No Navy Medics?

Agreed on both counts but my group wants the rich, we-created-this backstory, then to hell with it - adventure with a capital misbehave!

So it’s a balancing act at the start of every campaign

Re: What remains powered on a ship after a powerplant failure?

I don't recall this ever being in doubt. Cabin sliding doors were never meant to be airtight; bulkhead doors were. +1 Since I can’t multiquote I’ll +1 Moppy’s comment as well - on deckplans, thick lines are airtight, thin ones are not. At least on the old non-isometric deckplans. These new-fangled ...

Re: No Navy Medics?

Same here. Roll the die then pick the skill. If a player really wants to play a certain concept (ex-Navy Medic, for example) I’ll go as far as granting a Level 1 primary skill and Level 0 secondary skill of choice during Term 1 in place of rolling, then see where they go from there. This is the only...

Re: Pirates of Drinax - GMs thread

I haven't run Drinax so I'll not comment on that but as far as economics of the area, check out these pages: http://wiki.travellerrpg.com/Trojan_Reach_Sector/economic http://www.utzig.com/cgi-bin/iai/map_sector.pl?FSectors=Trojan_Reach The first is at the Traveller Wiki and uses T5/Travellermap econ...

Re: What's Traveller5 like?

Not sure about the Wiki but Traveller Map already has some data posted. In the drop down menu where you can select map style, etc, you can also select the Milieu or era and the map displays it. The Marches in 1900 look very, very different.

T5 could really benefit from a metaplot with lots of cool adventures and amazing characters like Norris and Strephon.
Ostensibly the T5 setting is The Galaxiad, that is, the Spinward Marches around 1900 Imperial.

If you’re interested in how an Imperial Navy vessel runs, you may want to check out this fan-written item. It deals with Gazelle Close Escorts but at $4 it’s a cheap but deep and thorough look at the crew structure and operations on a military vessel: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/242277/T5-G...

Don't have books to hand but yes, I believe Reflec is the only armor that stacks with, for example, Cloth. There may be others in the CSC I'm not aware of.

Re: What's Traveller5 like?

size and "bloat" is fine so long as everything is useful, fun or and unqiue - the bigger the better in that case i don't have any issue with the size of T5, just that I'm pretty certain it doesn't work as a playable game without a lot of fixing first What is it that makes T5 unplayable? I can only ...

Re: What's Traveller5 like?

I think Siggtrygg may also be referring to a lot of the “magic” tech/rules in MgT, like arc-field weapons, zoomy space dogfights and tachyon weapons, as opposed to Classic Trav’s shotguns and daggers in space, vector movement and plain old lasers and missiles... Yes, yes I know, gravity manipulation...

Photobucket is also a free option. You need to provide an email address but it’s basically drag&drop your pics into photobucket then you can copy/past the generated URLs into your forum posts.

Re: Animal Encounter: The Groat

Looks good. I know there's an illustration of a groat in one of the old CT books, I'll see if I can find it.... Minor quibble, I'd probably make the scent gland invoke uncontrollable retching/nausea rather than fleeing uncontrollably. Bit too D&D for my group :) EDIT: Found it, it's in the CT advent...

Re: Book 7 Commerical Entity?

Those rules were always a bit intense for me. I eventually boiled them down to something much simpler, 6 stats and more akin to character creation and terms. It was starting the Corp at Rank 0 that got me thinking about it. But I wish Kegdrainer best of luck! Would be nice to hear how the Corp devel...

Re: Alternative to drop tanks

Also if the tender is larger than the jumping ship, the refueled ship will need to accelerate away from said tender.

Not a big deal I suppose (what’s the 100-diameter distance of a 10,000 dton tanker?) but something to think about.
