Re: Precipitating Out of Jump - Damage?

Interesting. Perhaps use the Critical Hits table from Core, Space Combat? Maybe every 2 pips the jump roll failed by is a +1 crit. So missing the roll by 2 or 3 is a Severity 1 crit on the J-Drive, miss by 4 or 5 it’s Severity 2, etc. IMTU I have a table for misjumps, basically the more you fail by ...

Re: JTAS sensor rules

We’re playing in a small ship ATU right now so my sensor DM scheme stops at 10,000 Power. But AD’s suggested scale above is spot on.

Re: Rethinking Athletics Specialties

This is all great stuff to ponder. We’re playing MgT2e but I’ve kept Zero G as a separate skill. That is the one that really tips Dex over the edge into dominance for me. Any career that requires working in space/spaceships, I let the player chose a skill or three in the char gen tables to replace w...

Re: JTAS sensor rules

Since MgT2 has brought Power points/management back to the game, I’ve been providing sensor DMs based on the number of power points being used when ships get in range of one another. Cut the M-Drive, give your potential enemy a -DM. Etc. it works great for us, we’ve had some fun “running silent” sce...

Re: Fuel costs--jumps vs. weeks of operation

I prefer to think of Trav standard life support as being whatever is most efficient, cheapest and easiest for a given tech level. In player terms, it’s Engineering (life support) that handles the day to day. In my mind this is a lot of filter/cartridge/membrane replacement and maintenance on machine...

My engineer/pirate character had shares which I deemed were a ship's weapon we needed. It was cached during her former pirate days and was a mini adventure to recover.
Brilliant. Love making ship shares more flexible and useful, doing this IMTU from now on.

Re: New to Traveller... questions

Too bad you can’t see the Firefly series, it’s very good. Hopefully you will find a way. The movie Outland with Sean Connery is often cited, as well as the original Alien movie. Regular people doing their jobs and then something really bad happens. I personally also love The Thing from John Carpente...

Sharknado Pitch Meeting ... Why you don't uplift sharks, even if it's for scienk. I am equal parts ashamed and proud that as a young cinematographer in Hollywood in the early 2000's I shot many movies for The Asylum, including their very first mockbuster, "H.G. Welles' War of the Worlds" starring C...

Re: New referee and--Dear god, the mortgage costs.

Welcome! Yes, ship costs are really staggering. Traditionally, travellers will play the trade game (shipping goods and passengers from world to world), always on the edge of not making enough to cover expenses each month - and thus needing to do quick side jobs (adventures) to scare up some extra ca...

What do you make of the latest ISS mission’s astronauts saying the Starship was a “rough ride” compared to previous rockets? Musk doesn’t seem to be the kind of guy to cut corners (other than his stance on COVID-induced factory shutdowns I suppose) and certainly the sexy cockpit was impressive. But ...

Re: New to Traveller... questions

This current version of Traveller (MgT 2e) hews very closely to the original game (Classic Traveller or CT) in many ways; CT had a rule that PC skill levels could not exceed INT+EDU. I use that rule in my current game, with additional skills being gained at level 0; swapping is allowed during char g...

Re: New to Traveller... questions

Welcome! I wish I could answer all your questions with authority but many of them fall into the category of Rule 0: if a rule doesn’t fit your group, by all means change it so it does. IMTU (In My Traveller Universe), regarding swapping skills during character generation, I have no problem with it. ...

I vote for M-Drive generated field-effect inertia sump <waves hands frantically in all possible directions> That does raise some interesting questions about the relationship between energy and inertial damping... This is what we do. M-Drives generate twice their rating, half for thrust, half for in...

Re: Prevalence of military vets among PCs

Scouts, Rogues and Agents predominate in our games. We see about 30% straight up military characters. But we play an old school OTU where the Imperium is the jackbooted oppressor. Also we use the Spica Publishing career books from 1e, where the Space Patrol (we call it System Patrol, or SysPat, or j...

"Everyone has to make a whole bunch of the same roll over and over just to get one thing done" was a very common feature of adventure writing from decades ago (and not just for Traveller), but it's rarely done now. ... End result: you can't make this part exciting. My players did indeed simply wear...

And I’m looking hard at the Gatling Laser for the commander’s anti-personnel weapon (I know, not canon but seems like an oversight to me). The main gun is supposed to be auto-fire, and could, in MT, handle battle dress infantry with ease. Unfortunately MgT doesn't have much in the way of rapid fire...
