Re: JTAS 4 Sensor operations

I would tend to calculate detection primarily on the energy used in the transition. This is how I handle detection, based on Power currently in use. Allows the heroes to “run silent” by powering down all possible systems and making detection harder. I know we’re discussing jump emergence and fleets...

Re: Who Would Spec A Budget Power Plant?

When I got started in my industry we had an old adage: Fast, Cheap or Good: pick two. Because of the fiddly accounting in the RAW I’ve applied this wisdom to stages of components in vehicle and ship construction. GOOD power plant: RAW CHEAP power plant: 10-60% less cost, 10-60% more tonnage OR 10-60...

Re: Pirates of Drinax - GMs thread

Great write up, Old School 8) I am so loving reading all these different Drinax campaigns. Thank you all for taking the time to share here and sharing links. I’m starting to feel the hyperbole is true - could be the greatest RPG adventure series ever written :D I’m taking the plunge next campaign.

Re: 200t vs 300t Ship dogfight

Regarding small craft armor I’ve never let go of the three-tiered damage scale from the 2e playtest, but I’ve modified it to suit my table. We do Personal x1, Vehicle/Smallcraft x5, Ships x25. So fighters take 5x normal damage from ships, mitigates that armor issue a bit. Not to everyone’s tastes cl...

This is already covered in the dog fight rules...
Ah, I stand corrected. Thanks for pointing that out, I had forgotten. Never use the dogfight rules, or haven’t yet anyway.

Re: 200t vs 300t Ship dogfight

My read is that the DM-6 for 100+dton ships in a dogfight is only used versus small craft (ie, highly maneuverable fighters). Since both ships are roughly the same size I would personally drop the DM-6 for this encounter. I would however give each pilot DM-2 for atmospheric maneuvers, unless they ha...

Re: Merchants and Low passengers

The Imperial Navy also seems to have a dearth of medical personnel if you stick to the char-gen tables as written. If I’m not getting what I want I usually pick a shipboard skill the NPC has (Steward or Vacc Suit, for example) and make it Medic. Or Engineer, as that seems devilishly hard to come by ...

Re: Alternate Lab Ships?

Also the Donosev Scout vessel, a mothballed or retired one could make a good refurbished lab ship. Although it’s not the intended mission profile.

Re: Any good alternative design rules for ships out there?

Back when we were kids we used to port things back and forth between Traveller and Star Frontiers all the time, including starships. Haven’t played with SF since then but if you search for Star Frontiersman you’ll find the fanzine/archivist site. Traveller is much crunchier but SF has some customiza...

Re: High Guard - You only get one pass

Weber postulates it's a matter of fire control and battle management. Also see The Lost Fleet series by Jack Campbell. Fleets engage in drive-bys, accelerating towards one another on close but non-converging vectors. At optimal ranges, battle computers take over and a flurry of weapons fire happens...

Re: Hop Drive

You aim for where you think the destination will be. Because orbital mechanics are predictable (so yeah, steady state). The Jump duration variance (168 hrs + xD hrs) easily accounts for the ‘eight light minute’ conundrum.

Re: Are we playing two different games?

Yeah I only ask for rolls if I can’t decide the outcome for some reason, or if the anticipation of the roll will add meaningful tension.

With D&D or ICRPG however, playing with the polyhedrals is part of the ritual for us so we see a lot more rolls in those games.

Re: Growing a System Economy

The new government needs to really focus on Ag exports but also developing natural resources from the asteroid belts. A handful of subsidized ships to work that 5 parsec route would be a serious leg up; high quality foodstuffs, fibers, animal products, etc along with (eventually) ores from the belts...

I also mix 1e and 2e materials quite freely, I especially like the old Spica Publishing Career Books.

I haven’t seen it but I understand the 2e Traveller Companion offers more char gen options, including quick build templates like Belter, Marine, etc as well as a point buy system.

Agreed on both counts but my group wants the rich, we-created-this backstory, then to hell with it - adventure with a capital misbehave!

So it’s a balancing act at the start of every campaign

Re: What remains powered on a ship after a powerplant failure?

I don't recall this ever being in doubt. Cabin sliding doors were never meant to be airtight; bulkhead doors were. +1 Since I can’t multiquote I’ll +1 Moppy’s comment as well - on deckplans, thick lines are airtight, thin ones are not. At least on the old non-isometric deckplans. These new-fangled ...

Re: No Navy Medics?

Same here. Roll the die then pick the skill. If a player really wants to play a certain concept (ex-Navy Medic, for example) I’ll go as far as granting a Level 1 primary skill and Level 0 secondary skill of choice during Term 1 in place of rolling, then see where they go from there. This is the only...
