Re: Anyone else read “The Expanse” series?

I have wondered about the expanse as a setting - it doesn't even really need to be specifically the expanse - there's enough 'low tech' stuff in the rules to produce a passable analogue of the Expanse in TL7-10 traveller mechanics; just leave jump drives and jump fuel off and you can make perfectly...

Re: Homebrew setting

IMTU for many years now we’ve declared that the many tons of LHyd required are in effect heat sinks; that is, the hydrogen is used as a coolant for all the various ship systems. Once heated it is vented, mainly thru the “exhaust ports” at the rear of the ship :) Some amount of the heated, expanded h...

Re: Anyone else read “The Expanse” series?

How is the Expanse RPG for shipbuilding and ship combat? I downloaded the free quick start. Seems decent enough, but didn’t cover ships at all. I’ve spent most of my time with the adventures and haven’t actually played the game yet so I still have quite a bit to learn. There is a large amount of re...

Re: Aslan names. Why are they so complicated?

Rarely see Aslan IMTU but when we did, same problem. One player got frustrated and decided to put a fat drinking straw loosely between her teeth and then proceeded to sound out the names. Try it, it works! Doesn’t really solve the OP’s problem I guess - we devolved to nicknames, translations and Imp...

Re: Anyone else read “The Expanse” series?

Oh man, so good. So good. I read Leviathan Wakes back in 2011 after stumbling across it in a bookstore. Been hooked and have read everything since. The authors are absolute masters of escalating conflict to universal proportions while making you feel like it’s you standing there in your magnetic boo...

Re: Studying Athletics at university

You can also arbitrarily create tables for different educational institutions/disciplines if you don’t care for the wafer jack route. Several 1e 3rd party publishers provided alternate pre-career education/academy options that can be mined for inspiration. I suspect that’s out there for the current ...

I don’t know the Altered Carbon milieu at all so take this with a grain of salt but this awesome mash up you imply... The CSC has a personality transfer to an improved body at TL 18. Theev has vat grown 4 term Widows at TL 14. Neural implants and neural links are TL 13. ...averages to TL 15, Maximum...

Re: How long can a person survive in a low berth?

I’ve always done TESB style tanks of liquid, hibernation not frozen watch. Can’t get past what happens to frozen veggies after they thaw out. The only way I see around cellular disruption/destruction is not freezing but rather suspended animation. The Fast/Slow drug nomenclature in Traveller has alw...

Back in my college days I used to work the big boat shows in Chicago and one person described owning a boat as taking a cold shower and tearing up thousand dollar bills

Re: Is genetic material universal?

I think that’s a good call. There’s still a million crazy life forms for the players to fight, even creatures living in gas giants.

When you deviate from our D/RNA patterning save it for some truly alien aliens.

Re: Referee's Briefing

+1 for imperial redacted, great idea. I’d love to see a simple metagame for factions, corps, Noble houses, etc. Like 1e Dynasty, but only 6 stats, events, etc as if they were player characters. Couple dozen pages max. I have some pretty good house rules going but I’d love to see your take on somethi...

Re: JTAS 4 Sensor operations

I would tend to calculate detection primarily on the energy used in the transition. This is how I handle detection, based on Power currently in use. Allows the heroes to “run silent” by powering down all possible systems and making detection harder. I know we’re discussing jump emergence and fleets...

Re: Who Would Spec A Budget Power Plant?

When I got started in my industry we had an old adage: Fast, Cheap or Good: pick two. Because of the fiddly accounting in the RAW I’ve applied this wisdom to stages of components in vehicle and ship construction. GOOD power plant: RAW CHEAP power plant: 10-60% less cost, 10-60% more tonnage OR 10-60...

Great write up, Old School 8) I am so loving reading all these different Drinax campaigns. Thank you all for taking the time to share here and sharing links. I’m starting to feel the hyperbole is true - could be the greatest RPG adventure series ever written :D I’m taking the plunge next campaign.

Re: 200t vs 300t Ship dogfight

Regarding small craft armor I’ve never let go of the three-tiered damage scale from the 2e playtest, but I’ve modified it to suit my table. We do Personal x1, Vehicle/Smallcraft x5, Ships x25. So fighters take 5x normal damage from ships, mitigates that armor issue a bit. Not to everyone’s tastes cl...
