Re: New armor breakthrough

Well, it's essentially taking the concept of spaced armour and turning two layers with a single cavity into a honeycomb of multiple cavities. A very nice idea and a sensible application of increasing complexity. The problem (if there is one) will be the manufacturing cost HEAT projectiles are likely...

Re: Imperial characters playing Pirates of Drinax campaign

Well, that's essentially what Darokyn is, isn't he? Also, there are several factions, all of whom might think they have 'the right idea' for what to do in the reach; Drinax, GeDeCo, Daroykn and his old friends in the Admiralty - there are more than enough imperial factions capable of projecting infl...

Re: Some Ideas

Secrets of the Ancients has some proper ancient-tech stuff in it - the mongoose 1e stuff is largely compatible. The players got hold of a light courier/scout built by Grandfather (well, technically SEVEN) which had all-up traveller stats. I can't remember much about it - it had pretty impressive sta...

Re: Thinking of getting rid of Astrogation, Medic...and ship computers in general

Maybe I'm crazy, but some of the premises of Traveller seem not only wrong, but literally unthinkable. Just based on what we already are seeing now, for example, I have a very hard time picturing a future where we don't have little nanites in our bodies constantly fixing things...and it certainly s...

Re: Drinax and Anagathics

Tech-World makes anagathics, i think. Maybe, it says that in the beginning of the Demon's Eye adventure? I forget where i read it. Somewhere else is says that King Oleb sells Drinaxian artifacts to the dismay of his people. Maybe this is for anagathics from Tech-World? Perhaps procured via Rachando...

Paranoia High Programmers

...My local group of players, who've been exposed to Paranoia on a few occasions, have now started actively asking to play High Programmers, largely due to watching the trailer for The Death Of Stalin . It looks hilarious, and I'm wondering how to do something similar - a not-so-big-as-the-big-crash...

Re: How dangerous could the Debriefing even be?

I would go with the standard paranoia approach; ~ You are trying to take advantage of The Rules. The Rules are not consistent and subject to arbitrary and/or random change without notice (mandatory 'need to know' about rules updates are above your security clearance) To wit; the 'legally distinct' i...

Re: Space Mines

Tactically, minefields are to delay and/or funnel the enemy into killing zones. You want a really cheap solution. Then you have the ambush option, where you lay a minefield for a pursuing enemy. If you want an ambush weapon, you ideally want: ~ Passive Sensors ~ A non-radiating power source (chemic...

Re: Suggested Blueprints

Hello I plan for The most powerful Pirate Ship in known Space to be A 282,900 ton Super-Heavy Freighter converted into A Heavy Carrier. Ideas for how or suggested blueprints or both please Who did the converting? A pirate chop-shop or a 'professional' shipyard? Any cargo ship with a displacement li...

Re: Battle Riders

The drive's first function is to tear a hole in the fabric of space. The hole is precisely created and the ship naturally falls into the breach on a carefully directed vector. The drive then directs some of its energy to sewing up that hole again. The act of closing the hole severs the ship's ties ...

Re: Battle Riders

In 1e, it's only volume, not mass, that affects drive performance (sublight or jump). Which is why drop tanks matter- they're volume external to the hull - as do ships on docking clamps, whilst the rules don't give a monkeys whether internal cargo bays and hangars are empty or stuffed to the rafters...

Re: Revisiting Fighters in a Post High Guard Era

You can place high-intensity upgrade which grants AP2 to lasers. That is, in the situation with a lot of armour, effectively 2 more damage. Sh*t gets real from the pulses. I thought about that Intense Focus upgrade but it seemed to me that going with the Very High Yield would be more effective. Bot...

Re: Battle Riders

You get court martialed if you surrender your command while it's still capable of fighting; hopeless odds are a mitigating factor, but likely fatal for your career and/or hopes for promotion. That's why you at least make one pass at the enemy before skedaddling. "For the honor of the flag" is an ea...

Re: The Close Escort: not viable?

True but at the distances ships can engage at, the targets are still tiny and tracked by computers, no Mk 1 Eyeball will help you. Yes, but "size of target" still matters. You can't 'dodge' a laser bolt, because you can't see it coming, but evasion still matters because you can 'generate a miss'. A...

Re: Shake Down Cruise

Should there be a shakedown cruise? Probably. But - in the technical sense - if new it should have happened prior to you getting the ship. For a second hand ship - definitely. I often roll the "quirks" but don't actually tell the players what they are until they "find" them. There is no specific rul...

Re: The Close Escort: not viable?

Makes sense. 2 kdTons was the boundary of "capital ship" rules in 1e. But yes, Missiles have always been a bit pop-gun-ey; allowing missile bays to be capital-ship scale flak weapons gives them a function, and for that to be worth doing, fighters need to be a threat to a big ship (hence dogfighting ...

Re: Hard Scifi. What is it and why Traveller is Hard Scifi

Exactly. Even the most fantasy-esque element, psionics, has some common sense hard limits - teleporting having to deal with potential energy thermal shock, for example, or the fact that yes, a telepath can 'assail'someone, but trying to give someone a headache by grimacing at them for ten minutes co...

Re: Hard Scifi. What is it and why Traveller is Hard Scifi

I see hard science fiction and soft science fiction not as a question of one or the other, but rather a scale. The Martian is cryogenic ice, Star Trek is really wet slush, and Star Wars is steam. Traveller is packed snow. A numeric scale would work too. Very much so. You can have logical scientific...

Re: Machine guns and accelerator rifles

12.7mm is basically ".50 Cal" - it is the archetypical Heavy Machine Gun ammo. Feel free to add AP ammo, but definitely start at HMG for a base - light autocannon is generally 20-25mm range guns (with normal/heavy autocannon being 30 and 40mm weapons) Can't speak for Acc Rifles - only have 1st editi...
