Re: Ship Design Philosophy

Agreed. My concern - sorry if I'm not being clear - is that the PDC's main job is dealing with missiles - with a secondary roll of killing small craft and providing extra punch in CQB (which is basically dogfighting in Traveller terms). A Gauss Cannon from Central Supply Catalogue does not have the ...

Re: What do your PCs look like?

I rather like the Heroforge page, if you've seen that.

https://www.heroforge.com/

Has the advantage that you can actually get a 3d sculpt of the character you design, and there's enough generic space armour, clothing and weapons to produce most characters.

Re: "Ancients" Campaigns

I really like the Mongoose version of SotA and like you enjoy that chapter a lot. I has a campaign set during the Ancients era where the PCs played a variety of characters from augmented Neanderthals to sentient robots. Intrigued - any elements you'd care to share of gameplay/house rules/storylines...

"Ancients" Campaigns

With the Deepnight series mentioning stuff that happened during the Ancients domination of known space, I found myself leafing back through an old copy of Secrets of the Ancients. (Which is an awesome campaign) Out of the whole thing, though, my favourite bit by a mile was part 6 - the eponymous bit...

Re: Anyone else read “The Expanse” series?

Whats wrong with one week in null G? Nothing, given a decent exercise regime. In the expanse, the ships are shown as being in acceleration far more often than not. (and yes, I know, in part that's because filming 1G scenes is infinitely cheaper than 0G scenes, but it's also because 1G continuous ma...

Re: A couple of quick questions

2) What does the Track trait in Central Supply Catalogue do? Given it's attached to AA weapons exclusively, I assume something to do with the 'difference of speed' DM? As -Daniel- said, there was a track trait in the playtest. It allowed the weapon to ignore speed modifiers: Track: Through the use ...

A couple of quick questions

Apologies if these are covered somewhere in the rulebook. 1) Does the sustained damage rule (severity-1 critical per 10% structural damage) not apply to non-starship vehicles? 2) What does the Track trait in Central Supply Catalogue do? Given it's attached to AA weapons exclusively, I assume somethi...

Re: Anyone else read “The Expanse” series?

Trying to think through stuff for The Expanse using 2nd edition Traveller rules. A couple of thoughts: 1) Obviously non-gravity hulls are a thing, and there are rules for adding mechanics (double hull and hamster cage) which provide 'gravity' (well, centripetal force) to specific bits. Ships in The ...

Re: Memorable quotes from you traveller games

From a Mongoose office game: Referee: You lot have built up a real string of crimes to your name. Guilty Player: I have not committed any crimes! Referee: What about that planet that you genocided? *Pause* Guilty Player: Which one was that? Player's criminal records are always fun. Especially...

Re: Memorable quotes from you traveller games

My favorite quote from the last three years of running Traveller occurred when I was running one of my own DriveThru advenutres, "The Tktk Convergence." The Travellers were at Tktk's pedestrian, type-D downport, and went to an air/raft rental agency. They intended to take the air/raft deep into the...

Memorable quotes from you traveller games

Was discussing this with another friend who's a perennial GM, and wondered what "You know you're playing traveller when" moments had come up at your tables.... ~ "Everyone, quick! Run and hide in the unarmoured box filled with liquid hydrogen! We'll be safe in there!" ~ "There are some problems eye-...

Re: Ship Design Philosophy

There are probably any number of interrelated reasons that Disney cut the cord early on this series, and it shows in the more compressed story lines; to be fair, I suspect that by the end of the first season, the Mouse had a very good prognostication as to the direction of the franchise by first qu...

Re: Homebrew setting

Been thinking more about the mechanics of avoiding patrol ships, such as after a pirate raid. If your drive plume can be spotted from most anywhere, that's going to be tough. How long can you burn before someone's sensors can determine your direction? Not very long I'm guessing. So either a very lo...

Ironically the Expanse does introduce multiple star systems, of course, but you know what I mean.

Re: Homebrew setting

I disagree on the high g aspect. Going from 1G acceleration to 4G only cuts your travel time in half. Most freight isn’t going to be worth it. I suspect Locarno is correct. It's not so much a question of the time cost of cargo, but the time cost of ships. If the ships take half the time to perform ...

Re: Homebrew setting

Sounds interesting. Thoughts: 1] Yes, you're essentially going to have big shipping infrastructure at the 1000D orbital limit, and that's going to be a 'gateway' starport (starport - singular - if the 1000D limit can be jumped 'over' even if not 'into' or 'out of', and multiple if it can't be so the...

Re: Anyone else read “The Expanse” series?

How is the Expanse RPG for shipbuilding and ship combat? I downloaded the free quick start. Seems decent enough, but didn’t cover ships at all. I’ve spent most of my time with the adventures and haven’t actually played the game yet so I still have quite a bit to learn. There is a large amount of re...

Re: Computer Cores Processing Power and Jump Control Software

You definitely don't have to allow money or bandwidth but I'm not certain - it certainly doesn't say - that you can ignore Tech Level. You need TL15 to develop Jump Control-6, since you need to understand Jump-6, but you don't need a TL15 computer to run it, just a computer with enough "bandwidth"....

Re: Aslan names. Why are they so complicated?

Why are they so complicated? It depends on how you role-play Aslan. This. A big part of it is how ready you are to assign either shortened names or nicknames. The most prominent Aslan in Pirates of Drinax, for example, is just 'Kasiyl', and we've had an Aslan PC before referred to as 'Hobbes'. One ...
