Re: [Drinax] What do the people on the floating palace do?

Don't forget Rachando's Bazaar and dealing with similar merchants. The comment about a 'neutral port' is a good one but Drinax also deals with (is forced to deal with) a trade in high-end luxury items.

Re: Ship's Locker: Out of the Closet

Ok, I get your concept now, even if I don’t agree wth it. I would argue that the tonnage for powerplant includes more than just the reactor, it also inclues access. And that the space allocated for low berths, for example, includes the room needed to get in and out of them and wiggle to the exit. Y...

Re: Pirates of Drinax - GMs thread

I know nothing about MgT1 ship design or combat, but in 2e I like the concept of advanced torpedoes that can attack immediately from long range, negating countermeasures and also staying out of range of standard fusion or plasma weapons. By superior designs I was referring to the ability to miniatu...

Re: Pirates of Drinax - GMs thread

The emphasis on missle combat combined with the peculiarities of Traveller ship design make it quite simple to develop missile cruisers superior to any standard designs the Empire puts out. Could lead to interesting confromtations down the line. . . Indeed. The Fusion cannon is clearly indended as ...

Re: Pirates of Drinax - GMs thread

So basically the writer was trying to turn Sindal into the Peoples Republic Of China In Spaaaaaaaace . This nicely explains why the Sindalian Empire was ruled by autocratic "(Star) Dragon Emperors", although with some Scandinavian influences ("Kronshtadt Class Pursuit Ship" and, obviously, Sindal )...

Re: Ship's Locker: Out of the Closet

Because the module in a modular cutter doesn't need to do anything when it's not attached to the rest of the cutter. A containerised cryo-tray does; it gets taken down to district XYZ, loaded with people, and shipped up to orbit where it's attached to the freighter. Prior to that point, it needs to ...

Re: The Dichotomy of Piracy

Pirate fleets are kind of a central theme of the campaign. You could referee around that, I suppose, but the campaign itself mentions several times that the players are expected to have built one over time. Certainly in the 1e version the mission Finale is going to be kind of short if they don't. "...

Re: Ship's Locker: Out of the Closet

Not a bad idea - use freighters as people movers by containerizing people. Depending on how you treat the medic roll in your game (Mongoose rules just say its a medic check and leave it at that), that -1 is a very big deal. Between that and death, I get it, but I would still struggle to see them ge...

Re: The Dichotomy of Piracy

There's a lot of truth here. With local planetary governments responsible for protecting their own 'waters', it does make piracy possible. And with the arming of just about every ship in the Imperium, one would expect piracy to be the norm. Central authority though would reside essentially in each ...

Re: Pirates of Drinax - GMs thread

Yes. A repulsor is a tractor beam set on reverse. Dont remember what the point was. Repulsing missiles, pushing fighters away, preventing a hostile boarding? Never used them. Did we ever figure out what a Wyvern is/was, or is it undefined and therefore all speculation? I remember seeing theories ra...

Re: The Dichotomy of Piracy

We're sort of swept away by The Pirates of the Caribbean , which takes place at best towards the end of the golden age of piracy. Piracy usually takes place where governments cannot or will not project their naval power. Absolutely. So 47 attacks in just one region of Indonesia a few years ago. The...

Re: Pirates of Drinax - GMs thread

Thanks, guys. Came across it by accident and thought it might be a nice thing to have. The designs don't translate exactly (what the heck is a repulsor bay, anyway?) but even if all you use is the class names and tonnage, it's a nice to have. As noted, it doesn't mention the Wyvern or Harrier, and t...

Re: The Dichotomy of Piracy

~ Any attack by pirates on a recognisable 'flagged' asset of a nation is inviting a massive military response which will squash any realistic pirate force like a bug. Pirates currently operate in many parts of Asia and Africa. They occasionally take large ships for hostage. No Western state has cho...

Re: Ship's Locker: Out of the Closet

No doubt the low berths are the most efficient way to move people cost wise in a large scale evacuation. I imagine a scenario in which the logistics are worked out to get the ships in and out as quickly as possible, essentially an assembly line boarding and disembarking, with an army of doctors at ...

Re: Pirates of Drinax - GMs thread

Random thought - looking through some old material (Megatraveller) - found some reference to the Empire of Sindal with a pretty good run-down of their entire pre-fall navy. Obviously it's not correct for contemporary canon, as it doesn't namecheck Harrier -class commerce raiders or the heavier Wyver...

Re: Ship's Locker: Out of the Closet

I'm reminded of Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury - it had a big cryo-troop transport - essentially stuffed full of mercenary bounty hunters thawed out as required. Yeah - if absolute bulk of shipping troopers matters, and you're confident of superiority at the other end, then cryo-tray troopers work...

Taranto scenario

Was looking at this scenario..... Okay, I know it "shouldn't" have worked in real life, but I don't see, as written, how the RN can ever win this scenario. The RN gets "5 Flights of Fairey Swordfish (each Flight armed with either Torpedoes or Bombs)." The mission is "The Royal Navy gains a Major Vic...

Re: The Dichotomy of Piracy

I'm pretty much on board with Reynard, Paltrysum and Phavoc: ~ Piracy - as in, random guy lurking in a ship near a major port, looking to attack it and go "ahahahahahahah!" for the sake of being evil doesn't work and never has in reality. ~ Any attack by pirates on a recognisable 'flagged' asset of ...

Re: Is this a reasoable absolute minimum fleet?

Ultimately - the actual question: I'm toying with The Idea of A Campaign set around 1,075 where the characters are Darokyn's main allies in turning renegade and becoming Pirates. Is [stuff] a reasonable absolute minimum fleet for Darokyn? Easy answer: Yes. I've heard rumours of people starting a suc...
