Re: My Ubers Races Lightest Cruiser

regardless of TL, you are still limited to 1 hardpoint per 100 tons. Your 30,000 ship has a maximum of 300 hardpoints. You've consumed more than this. There's also something wierd with turret numbers. By 2nd edition High Guard, I don't see any requirement for a particle beam to take up multiple slo...

Re: Why not just bribe them?

Trying to bribe an Imperial Noble is likely to require a huge chunk of money - and any public discovery of a miscarriage of justice (from bribery of a witness or juror) tends to result in a retrial, not a dismissal of the case. And as to psionic manipulation - well, the Zhodani are a thing, so it ca...

Re: Spaceship armor: rhyme and/or reason?

Miniatures games, incidentally, very different. Until we get holo-deck quality holographic tables where miniatures march across the battlefield amidst explosions, the 'physicality' of the miniatures themselves will always have a strong pull beyond video games. This is why Warhammer is still a thing...

Re: Spaceship armor: rhyme and/or reason?

My experience with gaming is that if you want to track individual systems per ship, fleet battles bog down quick. Traveller ships have far too many individual weapons, they'd need to be grouped into batteries and ships given a strength number. SFB could be fun with 1-3 ships per player, but after t...

Re: The minimum force needed to guarantee beating this fleet

The Imperium wouldn't need a fleet to defeat this force. One IN destroyer squadron would wipe it from the skies. Not far off. The biggest problem with the fleet as listed is that the heaviest gun any ship in it mounts is a particle barbette. More to the point, of those, you have 3 - two on the Watc...

Re: Spaceship armor: rhyme and/or reason?

My latest kickstarter package to arrive at my door is Squadron Strike: Traveller. I would still love to see Mongoose dust off Call to Arms with a Traveller version - Call to Arms:High Guard. I keep tinkering with adapting Victory at Sea to a space based big ship combat game for Traveller... That'd ...

Re: Hijackers - gotta love'm

Well written and argued. And yes, ultimately, TL12+ security is unbeatable.....provided it's used. You can make a system theoretically unassailable today. The weakness, always, always, is the human element. People have to get on and off the ship. Crews are lazy and/or change on a regular basis due t...

Re: Stuff on my Uber-Races Diplomats

Thoughts: Social Standing - SOC is kind of irrelevant when looking at an alien species. They's have an effective SOC in Imperial Space but it's driven by the Imperium's view of them not any 'innate' quality. The skills seem a bit unnecessarily high; yes Diplomat and Persuade are 'core skills' but ex...

Re: Cruisers vs a Single Battleship

Hmm... Maybe destroyers get an extra benefit to Evasive... Gives them a choice of stay (relatively) safe or make that torpedo run... Bear in mind that destroyers will basically be nailed to evasive! at long range so whatever bonus they get can be considered 'active all the time' - they don't have a...

Re: Cruisers vs a Single Battleship

Well, destroyers ARE small and nimble ships that used these abilities several times to attack heavier ships with success in both World Wars, so I don't think that it's undeserved. Agreed. And they should - and are - capable of killing an equivalent points worth of battleships. The problem is, what ...

Re: January Playtest

Not that I know of. It must be very rare, anyway - most fortified batteries had a very limited 'sweep', so turning them on an inland target wouldn't be practical, and it'd be relatively rare for trained artillery crews to be wandering around looking for guns to fire, so using them effectively aside ...

Re: January Playtest

Coastal Invasion scenario: ~ How much do Landing Boats and Transport Aircraft cost? Do I get "enough to carry the force" for free? ~ Since all big gun emplacements have to be placed on an objective, what happens if the attacker successfully captures that objective? Assuming, for example, that a 490 ...

Re: Cruisers vs a Single Battleship

Fair enough. Is there a feel that the Arethusa would be totally unable to engage a destroyer with gunfire, as a result, though? Because that feels like too harsh a restriction. The "-1 for speed, -1 for destroyer" represents a huge break-point in the difficulty of hitting a target, because even if y...

Re: Cruisers vs a Single Battleship

So....yeah. To see if what I assumed was true was true, we had a quick playtest with the Bismarck versus.....basically most of the V- and W- class destroyers ever build (24 of them, in fact). And yes, the result was pretty much as expected. For the first two turns, the Battleship was unable to hurt ...

Re: January Playtest

Doing the setup for a quick game - noticed a typo.

Fleet lists, page 31 - Hood-class Battlecruiser.
Port Torpedoes state 10" range whilst Starboard Torpedoes state 12" range. They're MkIVs, the same as on the Admiralty Destroyers, so it should presumably be 10"

Re: Cruisers vs a Single Battleship

Battleships have two very big vulnerabilities - torps and aircraft. Yes and no. Battleships' big guns have a massive blind spot for destroyers - a fast-moving destroyer head-on at long range is basically immune to turreted guns, and even once the range comes down it's going to be a rare case that a...

Re: January Playtest

As a personal view, I think the former makes sense. The swordfish aren't materially different from the ones I'm going to use in the game after, playing a generic "victory at sea" battle. So giving them extra 'punch' in this scenario seems wierd. By comparison, the Italian warships are in a different...

Re: January Playtest

Something's still wierd with the Taranto scenario. Royal Navy Fleet 5 Flights of Fairey Swordfish (each Flight armed with either Torpedoes or Bombs). Victory and Defeat The Royal Navy gains a Major Victory if it manages to cripple or sink at least one battleship and at least one Flight moves off the...

Re: Putting a self sufficient fighting force in a strange land

1) How many weeks supply does that MEU have? (I don't know) Depends how many you send it with. This will very with TL - the transition from large magazines to rechargeable power cells for weapon ammunition, for example, but also the rise of every-single-thing-you-carry-having-a-battery-in-it. In Op...
