Re: Historic Vilani-Zhodani contacts?

It's quite possible the Zhodani were aware of the existence of the Vilani but not the other way. A handful of Zhodani agents, would likely have had no trouble positioning themselves in the upper ranks of the Vilani and psionically ensure they didn't expand through Corridor and focused instead in oth...

Re: Do GURPS and Mongoose Traveller remain in continuity?

GURPs seems to have genuinely tried to develop the franchise and integrate with their system, and ebven if I didn't really read more than those publications dealing with the military aspect, the enthusiasm that they approached this game and the effort they poured into it shouldn't be under-apprecia...

Re: Intelligent weapon, now I'm lost?

some of that software is really for Ships more than a gun. I don't think many guns are envisioned running Intellect. Now, why not have him be a drone nut instead. There are little flying combat drones he could command, and tinker with and modify etc... He'd have a little control interface and hide, ...

Re: Massive Traveller Reprint - Any Changes?

the 200ton Wilds Trader in one of the supplements has jump-2 but only lists a model/1 computer. It would need a 1bis to run jump control for a jump 2.

Re: Technology Marches On - The Alcubierre Drive

one possible problem with Dr. White's method of detecting a tiny change in spacetime using the interferometer... when the light on the one leg passes into the bubble, it would be altered, but when it then passes out again, wouldn't the alteration be "backed out" of the photon so no net change would ...

don't forget, it's best practice to match velocity with the target star before jump. Stars can have significant relative velocities.

Re: Robotic ships

Why uplift a Dolphin? You can't own it, you can't directly profit from it. Dolphins, chimps, gorillas, etc., are communities of intelligent beings, and, as you point out, not slaves. Red Zones aside I think people will, fictional setting or actual future, build an AI just to see if they can. well, ...

Re: a 3D Traveller universe

In my real space creation, Epsilon eridani is an important world because it was the second contacted alien race. Problem is it is 3 parsecs away and ships at the time period were maximum J-2 so the 1-2 Jump routes take many weeks to get there. Besides contact, it was determined E. eridani was an id...

Re: a 3D Traveller universe

yeah. There has to be other stars, not on the map. only stars with some fuel source are listed is my theory. Military forces can maintain huge fuel depots at locations on the map with no apparent star/mainworld. It may even have a sun, but for some reason no hydrogen gas giants (or gas giant far too...

Re: Robotic ships

while it may be technically possible, subject to the debates of philosophy, metaphysics, theology and the rest - "true" AI (as opposed to expert systems capable of limited cognitive processing) are simply NOT built. because why? You can not "own" your creation, much less sell it. Pinocchio just wand...

Re: Robotic ships

I'm not so sure it's absurd to say AI can't jump ships. First off, it's a huge change if they can, almost no background material refers to AI/robots in history. The possibility that there is some weird not-fully-understood psionic-or-otherwise component to FTL works for me. The human mind on board t...

Eleftheriades and Selvanayagam? Are those Vilani names? First one is Greek, definitely. Second one probably is... Malaysian? Indian? South Asian anyway... Re: Stealth in Space

thermoelectrics should be able to convert excess heat, where it could be stored in the 'jump capacitors' and/or emitted as a tight beam laser (could cause detectable backscatter with local dust). The most detectable thing on the traveller ship designed for stealth might be the gravitics Mdrive. but ...
