Re: Travel times surface to orbit?

Even a ship with an M-Drive less than the gravity of the planet can still takeoff and land, as long as there is an atmosphere. . . . [emphasis mine] Good point about atmosphere. Airless worlds with more than 1 G surface gravity are probably rare, but don't try to land on one without enough maneuver...

Re: Non-lethal weapons

Want to run the logic by me where a non lethal device is going to be less tolerated than something that is lethal? Because authorities want to discourage their use. The more reliable and safe the stunning technology is, the more it becomes a "weapon" and less a "defensive" or "self-defense" item. O...

Re: Travel times surface to orbit?

. . . With gravitic drives, atmospheric speed is not really the issue, the ship simply goes straight up. A car, at 100kph, could read the orbit of the space station in about 2 hours. A streamlined ship should have no problem with normal acceleration rates. . . . Yes, just levitating to space with a...

Re: Travel times surface to orbit?

I would say that the time to orbit is at least partially dependent on a maximum atmospheric speed. It's best to limit speed so that the hull doesn't get too hot; even if it can handle the heat, many cycles of hot and cold lead to fatigue that's an issue for a vehicle meant to fly as long as a B-52. ...

Re: Non-lethal weapons

Want to run the logic by me where a non lethal device is going to be less tolerated than something that is lethal? One point is that there aren't really any non-lethal weapons; it's more accurate to call them reduced-lethality weapons. Some people have heart attacks in response to electric stun wea...

Re: Armor Effectiveness

Realistically, a missile that hits a ship at Traveller velocities should punch a hole the shape of the missile all the way through the target, leaving incandescent plasma behind through the path it took through the ship, and a trail of plasma for several kilometers beyond the exit hole. Lasers shoul...

Re: Non-lethal weapons

One plausible science fiction stun weapon is the electro-laser. It shoots the target with a beam (or possibly a pair of beams) tuned to maximize air ionization rather than energy to the target, creating a path of ionized air that is conductive until the ions dissipate or neutralize. Once the path of...

Re: Fuel for Vehicles

. . . I read an excellent argument about how superconducting batteries (which likely possess highest energy density possible with a battery) are limited to having an energy density of no more than an equal volume of gasoline due to magnetic stress on the material. Given that a good internal combust...

Re: Fuel for Vehicles

Ultra-tech batteries have such high energy density that fusion is only needed for heavy vehicles like grav tanks. RTGs are great for long endurance but modest power requirements.

Re: Flexible Far Traders?

The problem is that a J-3 drive is about half the cost of a trader. Refitting an old ship would cost almost as much as buying a new ship, and you would end up with a beat up old wreck with a gleaming new jump drive. It would be faster than waiting for new production though... In that case, it might...

Re: Characters Height and Weight

I don't recall where I've seen such rules, but there are a lot of versions. One point for realism is that men and women of equal height tend to be very similar in weight; men average heavily than women because they're taller on average. So when building game rules, it's good to start with a height f...

Re: Flexible Far Traders?

As I see it, the differences between regular fuel tanks, and cargo-fuel spaces, and collapsible fuel tanks are: - regular fuel tanks are designed in, good only for fuel, including jump - cargo-fuel spaces are designed in, good for fuel or cargo, including jump fuel - collapsible fuel tanks are a che...

Re: Beta critique: Element: travele4.pdf: Multimode Decoy

If a sensor operator recognizes a ping as a decoy (peeks with a telescope), he or she can tell missiles that it's a low priority target. "Some of you whack that ping in case it's a funny looking fighter. The rest of you can ignore it."

Re: Fuel for Vehicles

An intermediate fuel between batteries and fusion is the radioisotope thermal generator. They've been used on space probes for decades, and are idea for cases where long endurance is useful but the vehicle is too small for even the smallest fusion plant. Of course fusion plants can be pretty small a...

Re: Beta critique: Element: travele4.pdf: Missile Ambush

Are the attacks opposed rolls? If so, I'd ignore skill adjustments. True, you're not going to put an ensign fresh from the academy in charge of a spinal weapon. But any target worthy of shooting with a spinal weapon is worth defending with equally skilled crew. Skill adjustments only matter if there...

I'm not going to get too proprietary about it. I'll probably give it a pay what you like price, assuming I finish it. I bought a Blender book so I make cooler illustrations, but I might just make do with Inkscape deck plans. The other value added that I have in mind is mini-adventures. What fun thin...

Some really heavily trafficked routes may have many thousands of dtons of freight and hundreds or thousands ...
