Re: Why no career books?

I like the idea of awards too, even if they don't have any official rules effect. Sure, you can have role-playing situationslike someone meeting a character and saying, "Are you the Kus? The only living Vargr from Extolay with an S-E-H? Your drinks are on the house, and we'll give you the Count's Su...

Re: Alternative sensors rules

An interesting consequence of the immense radiation resistance of a basic starship hull is that it should be able to keep a whole lot of radiation from escaping, not just keep inbound radiation from reaching the ship's interior. That could greatly reduce a ship's radiation signature for direct radia...

Re: Why no career books?

The way I'd like to see careers covered in expansion volumes is by what they can do in adventure time, not so much in character generation. Books I could see as worthwhile are: Mercantile campaigns (I'd include mining there) Mercenary campaigns Military campaigns (distinct from mercenary because the...

Re: Classic and New Era books for sale

My main point of curiosity about New Era is the Empress Wave. It's described very thinly in the wiki, and I'm curious about whether it's described more in the books, or if the thin material in the wiki is because it wasn't much described in the books.

Re: Brainstorming a Ringworld adventure

. . . As for the ringworld changing the Imperium, I'm not sure that it does, that much. There is no meaningful wealth to be had, and while there may be relatively huge numbers of people, the population density is much lower than civilized planets, and the people are mostly hunter-gatherers. If you ...

Re: How do you generate child characters?

The skill Gunner includes both firing the weapons and maintaining the equipment on proper working order. It also includes the complicated business of putting missiles on a path that will intercept the target after what can be a long trip, and putting sand clouds into position where they can intercep...

Re: How do you generate child characters?

Traveller skill levels are a bit different from a lot of games. They're based on die modifiers for a 2d6 roll, so each step means more than a step in a 3d6 or 1d20 roll. But they still span a wide range: -3: inexperienced -2: inexperienced, but Jack of all Trades-1 -1: inexperienced, but Jack of al...

Re: How Do You (Logically) Prevent Players from Skipping Payments?

The specific commercial role of the free trader is to pick up jobs that don't fit into the business model of the big freight or passenger liners. If a given route has a weekly cargo load of 10k dtons coreward and 9000 dtons rimward, with a typical variation of 500 dtons week to week, the big guys wi...

Re: Brainstorming a Ringworld adventure

The fastest subsonic aircraft is the Boeing Dreamliner. It tops out at Mach 0.85 (1050 km/h, 650 mph). To give an idea of the size of a 1 AU ringworld, 1 million km wide, let's fly a Dreamliner around it. 1 AU diameter is 149.6 million km. That times pi is 470 million km. Dividing the 470 million km...

Re: Prison adventure ideas

Sure. Though I have no idea of the economics of this stuff. I guess adventures are mostly given away for free since nobody would pay for them? I don't know the economics of it either; I haven't put my work up for sale. For something of uncertain value, it's possible to sell for "pay what you want",...

Re: How Do You (Logically) Prevent Players from Skipping Payments?

. . . I wonder too what's canon in terms of *where* payments are supposed to be made. Are you intended to return to the same system every month to make your payment? If so, that severely limits the range of a ship under mortgage. If you can make payments elsewhere (e.g., at any A or B starport, or ...

Re: Optima substitute for Google Drive documents

The body font for the Classic LBBs was, per LKW, Helvetica. I think it looks more like Aksidenz Grotesk, but at that size, the differences are going to be subtle. There are a gazoogol Helvalikes out there, including g-dhelpusArial. Looking at the upper case "R" and digit "7", it's clearly not Akzid...

Re: Brainstorming a Ringworld adventure

When the wiki cites sources, the source citations are generally solid, even if the text itself is not. It would be nice if everything were properly marked as classic canon, Megatraveller canon, New Era canon, Lorenverse canon, etc., or non-canon. But it's not. There was a UWP update to canon in T5 ,...

Dang, Epicenter. That is some really good stuff. You should put that together into a module. . . .
If I get the In Design template converted to Word or Scribus before my seven day In Design trial expires, I'll send it to you if you want to follow Bulletsponge's suggestion.

Re: Brainstorming a Ringworld adventure

Actually the Leenitakot ringworld is OTU canon since it is mentioned in the canonical Hinterworlds sector write up in Challenge 39.[/quote] I stand corrected. I haven't yet received my Grognard USB (but it's in processing at least), so I couldn't look it up there. But I did see it in the wiki, so I...

Re: Brainstorming a Ringworld adventure

There are a few ringworlds in the Traveller universe. The one that I know of that is documented in canon is Leeitakot or Leenitakot, Hinterworlds 1432. There's also a sphereworld, Sphere, Nooq 3201. Both are Lorenverse canon, mentioned in GURPS Traveller Alien Races 3 . There are probably also some ...

Re: When is a starport not

. . . The definition of what a 'starport' is vs. what a 'spaceport' is hasn't been addressed either. . . . I'm pretty sure that the distinction is addressed in canon, at least for the Imperium: the starport is the mainworld port recognized by the Imperial Star Port Authority, and others are spacepo...

Re: Optima substitute for Google Drive documents

Quattrocento Sans isn't a better match than Marcellus, but it's not a worse match, either. I'll have to take a look at it if I try Google Docs again. (I just ust revivedthis thread to keep Traveller font talk in one place.) In widely available fonts other than Google, there's URW Classico and Zapf ...
