antimatter

Although the Traveller technology scale places antimatter beyond the reach of the technology described in any rules (which tops out at TL15, except for naming a few things beyond that level), it doesn't need to be a TL20 technology. It could be that it's at the limit of available technology for your...

Re: So, what's with the supplements?

For impatient players: Buy the stuff from older editions. Mongoose 1. GURPS Traveller . Milieu 0. Rebellion. Classic. If it's setting material (what is K'kree culture like?) you don't need to translate to the latest rules anyway. For mercenary stuff, the instant adventurers in the classic books are ...

. . . Earth discovers commercial fusion plus possibly commercial scale solar. Coal becomes obsolete as a fuel. . . . That's one plausible future. But I think the more likely coal capture is that used by the people of the Amazon basin before European diseases killed most of them: biomass captures th...

Re: Pirates: Revolution on Acrid

. . . So it sounds like they've located the starport on top of Acrid's version of Mount Everest, which could be quite a massive mountain considering that the planet itself is size A, a super-earth. Actually, larger worlds are likely to have smaller mountains, because of the stronger gravity. Note t...

Or you could tun th NPC into PC and have a player play him.
Along those lines, see also this thread:

Re: The players' covenant

I would agree that Ars Magica requires mature play. The setting premise implies that magi are pretty creepy to be around, even for other magi, unless they have Gentle Gift. That could be played as reason to make player-against-player more justified, because the magi all carry around their creepy aur...

Re: Pirates of Drinax - GMs thread

That depends on the fact that we know of no method to quickly factorize large numbers today - but that might change. And even with brute force only, one TL of advantage over the encrypter (which Drinax probably has), will make it possible to crack almost any code (yes, not one-time pads, but those ...

Re: Pirates of Drinax - GMs thread

So breaking the encryption on the mail drums is one thing, how accessible what they find inside is something else. Depending on how juicy the information is, you may only give a pieces of information, a coded message, etc. I would argue that anything encrypted is absolutely beyond reach without the...

Re: Advise on what to do

I would seriously suggest you forget about all of this additional table nonsense or switch to point buy character generation. . . . This is a good answer. And to avoid absurd results in play, look for a diceless combat and skill resolution system. Also, role-play all social encounters instead of pl...

. . . The biochemical weapon in this adventure strips Aslan of their dignity and civilised nature, turning them into degenerate monsters. This will have more dramatic effect on the Travellers if the contrast with their usual violent but honourable nature is made clear. Rather than presenting feral ...

Re: The players' covenant

One way to take care of the problem is to use something like the troupe system. Suppose the player group is a referee and four players. Everyone including the referee rolls up three or more characters: a primary, a secondary, and one or more extras. You don't even have to decide which of the three o...

Re: An Alphabet of Ships

That's a lot of good work. About the only thing I don't like about it is that the heavy automation goes against my vision of a central Traveller idea, that sophonts remain necessary, even if current trends in automation suggest that your designs are more plausible than fully-crewed ships. But that's...

. . . Which leads to this thought - if a ship loses some of the cargo it’s contracted to deliver (not speculative cargoes), who pays? Does the ship owner eat the expense and penalties, or can they claim that action was required to save the ship? This would be covered by the terms of shipping contra...

Drag them off to jail, removing each of them for tedious interrogations for a while, then back to jail. Meanwhile, their ship is running up berthing fees and not generating revenue. In jail, they meet some interesting people who may be useful in the future. Eventually, the investigation runs its cou...

Re: Hostage on Arunisiir

A prisoner exchange is another option. Who would the kidnappers' families value enough to demand that the kidnappers release the hostage? A nice role-playing aspect of this is that it allows the players to get some use out of their coolest, scariest weapons -- to threaten, rather than the commit mas...

Re: Traveller 2nd Edition Errata

That's great work! The format looks good even on mobile.

Do you revise the unofficial to official when the correction is confirmed by an editor? Or are the things marked official corrections that appear in newer PDF editions but not necessarily in print or first release PDF editions?

. . . We don't carry around expensive meat-sacks for fun, but because we have to. Advances in naval automation allow fewer meat-sacks, and advances in manufacturing automation make equipment relatively less expensive than meat-sacks. That's Baumol's cost disease in action, again. It turns up all ov...

Re: Shipping in the OTU is cheap!

It's best not to look too deep into these things. The Cr1 = 1 USD looks fine from the consumer prices that Nog posted, but make no sense when looking at wage rates for various professions. I'm sure someone can come up with some convoluted explanation for why this is, but it's a heck of a lot easier...

Re: What skills fit the pay?

Based on the real world crime articles I've read, a hit man gets anywhere from nothing at all (mob boss says, "Kill him or I'll kill you.") or status (gang leader says, "Kill him and you are a fully initiated member.") to around US$50k; typical seems to be around $10k. A Traveller Imperial Credit is...

Re: [Pirates of Drinax] Powerful psions or errata?

Note that the 15-power psionic still has to train for skills, and might end up with hardly any skills with which to use that exceptional power, unless they take up the psionic career path, which (if I remember correctly) allows acquisition of additional skills. With that hypothetical 16 power, I mig...
