Re: Can gauss weapons use AP rounds?

If the referee feels that APDS ammo for the player group’s gauss rifles make them too powerful, just don’t give it to them. Or the other way around “there might be serious opposition ahead, you might wanna get some of these...” I'd say that standard Gauss rounds are powerful enough, though I haven'...

Re: Inaccurate Jumps in Traveller

As I remember the GURPS Traveller rules for jump, an ordinary failure resulted only in a minor problem. For a piloting error, the ship might emerge from jump on an inconvenient vector; for an astrogation error, the ship might emerge from jump in the vicinity of an outer planet, rather than the main ...

Re: Can gauss weapons use AP rounds?

In the classic Mercenary, Gauss rifle ammunition was described as a 4 mm, 4 g round, with both an armor-piercing core and a soft sheath for stopping power. So by that description it's already armor-piercing.

Re: Pirates of Drinax patron quests.

A planet-wide sentience was a major plot element of the film Solaris. The remake that starred George Clooney is more accessible and it's pretty weird. Try the Russian original by Tarkovsky if you're really adventurous.

Re: DIY advanced tech starship upgrades

My impression of people who work on old cars is that to be legitimate antiques, they have to be repaired only from parts of similar vintage as the original vehicle, either from junkyard salvage or replacement parts that would have been used for repairs before the vehicle was an antique. But for a Tr...

Re: does Traveller 2E not include aliens?

My point about gender non-conforming Aslan is that they might be culturally assimilated into a society that downplays gender roles, even for beings with gender roles that are (believed to be) instinctual, so that culture overrides instinct -- and others might be individuals who are born different, a...

Re: More Broadsword

I would argue that mercenaries -- at least in the sort of mercenary campaign players are going to want to play -- are not cannon fodder. They're the elites who train local cannon fodder on one side, and lead them into battle against the cannon fodder on the other side. Of course, some of your forces...

Re: More Broadsword

The whole concept of the Broadsword is cool. It's like a wish list of macho military space opera fantasy epics. Lots of guns? Check. Armored? Check. Room for some soldiers? Check. But when you get right down to it, it's pretty impractical. All good points. Definitely cool. Rarely practical. I think...

Re: does Traveller 2E not include aliens?

There are some things about Aslan that are a constant. Males have that property urge and not much patience for noncombatant jobs. Females do all the brain work. But they're not necessarily just the colonist hordes. Aslan females would fit into Imperial society quite well, including military support ...

Re: More Broadsword

The Broadsword class is meant for mercenary companies of a certain size. As a ship meant for mercenaries, it's in a spot between noncombatant civilians and combatant military -- mercenaries are combatant civilians. In combat, they have similar status to regular military, but with the expectation tha...

Re: A Traveller Miniatures Game?!!

I can see two general categories of miniatures for Traveller -- and gaming in general, but this is Traveller territory. One is for wargame style conflicts -- maybe a mercenary campaign going into battle, maybe just a straight out wargame. The other is for situations where regular campaign characters...

Sweet image. I'm curious what actual weather would be like on a water world. Intuitively, I would guess that the clouds would be stretched along the direction of rotation, but the picture is too pretty to bother much with meteorological pickiness.

Re: New player to Traveller

Wing it indeed. And make a note of it too. You can look up the rules later, and if the wing it result was significantly wrong, explain to players that you won't play it that way again. And if it's wrong and unfair, you can offer a limited undo.

Re: More Broadsword

A landing fitted to a specific design of ship makes good sense on worlds with enough traffic of specific ship designs to bother with specialization. That might include a dedicated landing bay for a specific model of super-liner, if it's built for landings. Of courseit would make sense for common shi...

Re: Modular hull question

That Disney video is interesting, but I'm somewhat amused that Discovery Channel was that receptive to Disney corporate propaganda. But I think Discovery Channel may be owned by Disney , and in that case it makes sense. It certainly has some good inspiration for luxury starship design. Imagine the w...

Re: does Traveller 2E not include aliens?

A lot of this discussion explains why my favorite Traveller aliens are Vargr, Hivers, and Droyne. Vargr are uplifted wolves plus 300k years of natural evolution gives creatures. The uplift made them bipedal to free the forelegs for use as manipulative limbs, so they're supposed to look like bipedal ...

Re: Modular hull question

I went on a cruise earlier this month on the Disney Magic . The fore and aft sections of the ship were built in two separate shipyards, and one part was towed to the other and the two sections joined together. I don't know how they did it; surely half a cruise ship isn't easily made seaworthy. But t...

Re: Low tech ships - Need help

If we assume a current level of technology, game rules generally don't give realistic results. We can use real rocket science instead. Ground to space is probably best handled with an aircraft launch vehicle that lifts a rocket to the edge of space, where the rocket takes over (and the aircraft retu...

Re: New player to Traveller

For Mongoose race statistics, the classic Traveller CDs are the best resources. For detailed information, and abundance of races, I recommend the GURPS Traveller Alien Races books, plus GURPS Traveller Humaniti . It's generally the case that if there's a GURPS book on a subject, it's probably the be...
