Re: Spacecraft Operations - Running Costs

In particular, I am not sure that your typical troupe of adventurers could afford the mortgage payments of a new ship. That's kind of the point. If they're only taking freight jobs, they're also going to need to take patron missions to bring up their total income, and patron missions of dubious leg...

Re: New Adventure Start: Flatlined

The characteristics and skills of the characters are—quite frankly—a bit difficult to manage. With expert programs, augments, most of the armor types available, and dangerous combat rules, a player’s die rolls are not that big of a deal. Traveller is a game in which the role playing is more importa...

Re: House Rules: Character Generation aka Traveller Creation

I've used 1 and 2 for games with lower term limits. If you're using them for characters going to geriatric admiral I think you've missed the point somewhere. 3 I wouldn't use, but again wouldn't mind it in a game with term limits. 4 and 5 I wouldn't use, and in fact would take as a sign that a playe...

Book 9 Robots

Is there errata for this? Or even just some worked examples? I cracked it open to try to use it for the first time, and it is not actually user friendly.

Re: Are we playing two different games?

I have the same problem with Traveller. I am NOT going going to hunt through 1,000s of PDFs. It's a fair critique if you're trying to use every rule ever published. For myself, I found it remarkably liberating to realize the 1e core book rules were stronger than most of the game rules out of supple...

Re: Ship inspection time for the Broadsword, or why you're late to the party.

Some nice potential for roleplaying here. A-E, all options involve time spent roleplaying for no other reward than being allowed to proceed with the adventure, putting the characters in a position of powerlessness, and being allowed to roleplay kissing the GM's NPCs' asses. There is potential for r...

- scour the planet for luxury goods: furs, honey(/equivalent), alcohol or drugs, gems/shells/wood unique to the planet, etc. - increased education: TL 3 is already steam power/19th century, so they should be able to handle educators or at least material from offworld. - gains from removing corruptio...

Are we playing two different games?

Because I've come to think we are playing two different games, out of the exact same rulebook. In the game I play, I picked up from the start on the "don't roll skill checks unless you're being shot at, opposed or working under adverse circumstances" (my paraphrase, but true to the spirit I believe)...

Re: First and Second Edition

You're underestimating the compatibility of 1e and 2e. You can use the original career books with 2e with very little problem, and deal with any skill discrepancies on the fly.

What do you mean by "unviable characters"?

6. Small planet or large moon, but a strong magnetosphere and thick atmosphere keep it livable. Every step is like walking on the moon. With a smaller globe you can get anywhere on the world in an air-raft or light jet surprising quickly. 7. Heavy planet. Visitors commonly use exoskeletons just to g...

Iron man point buy: write down whatever numbers you want. If I approve the character you can play. If I don't approve the character you can't play.

Notice I didn't say you can't play that character, I said you can't play.

As there is no listing in Mongoose Traveller 1st edition that I can find, denoting what levels of skill mean what... It's on page 6, under Skills. They even use Medic skill/doctor as the example: ... A character with level 2-3 in a skill is a skilled professional in that field. A character with Med...

Re: untested house rule

Defiles the laws of fizziks, I think. The universe normally doesn't give everyone a trophy. That's why we have bell curves. It's kind of like "the higher they are, the farther they fall", rather than "everyone falls the same distance no matter what their height." Well, it's not simulationist/realis...

untested house rule

House rule: unskilled penalty is the negative of a character's highest single skill rank, instead of a flat -3. Idea is to level the field between lucky and unlucky character generation, and between retired admirals and shorter term characters. Critiques? Is this something you would like as a player...

Re: Rat Trap

That is a convoluted and highly contingent setup to drop in the middle of an ongoing game, but as the setup to a one-shot I would play along. "Poisoning" vodka seems a little generic; if it's not already what you mean, look up methanol/methyl alcohol/wood alcohol poisoning. Industrial uses, cheaper ...

I'm already moving away from Third Imperium, so I suppose I'd stick with home brew. But if I did have to pick a book series, I might do something with Lois McMaster Bujold's Vorkosigan universe. It's surprisingly Traveller-esqe, with stunners and plasma guns and grav cars. FTL is by wormhole routes,...

Re: Putting a self sufficient fighting force in a strange land

What would this look like in Traveller terms? I could see the equivalent of one MEU being sufficient to establish control over a Lo Pop world or colony. Tech advantages could provide enough combat power to defeat much larger lower-tech units. I’m not sure how that would scale into maintaining contr...

Re: Upgrading drives on exisiting ships

I can see a case for having to to replace M-Drives in whole rather than part. They're already reactionless, and we don't have much information on how exactly they work. It would be just as valid to rule they're not linearly additive, or even that two adjacent reactionless drives could interfere with...
