Re: The futility of Pirates of Drinax?

"I rewrite canon as I go. But even if you adhere to canon, remember: In the long run, we'll all be dead. And sometimes after that, the stars will die and the universe will reach maximum entropy."

Then Grandfather will say "Let there be light" and a Big Bang will occur.

Re: Standard vs. custom design: Where do you draw the line?

I'm beginning to believe 3D printing is becoming the new science fantasy of universal creation. Reminds me of creating any item, large or small and no matter how complex, using transporter technology in Star Trek.

Re: The Dichotomy of Piracy

Even at the 100D mark, space is still big. Just as important is trade activity. More trade more ships. Smart pirates don't just go fishin' and hope for a nibble. They learn the ponds and know the fish. They know how much opposition there is and how to lay in wait and time patrols. They use deception...

Re: The futility of Pirates of Drinax?

Didn't something happen in history which wrecked the Sindalian Empire even with those weapons and got Drinax slagged but for a single floating city? Oleb forgetting history as in don't mess with the kitties.

Re: The futility of Pirates of Drinax?

And no one thinks massive genocide events wouldn't create an equally massive response from the two great powers and maybe make the Zhos take notice? If it's done to a planet in one empire, the other empire(s) could assume it could happen to them next. The Mouse that Roared would need to be crushed. ...

Re: The Dichotomy of Piracy

You're expected to build a pirate fleet, which I assume other space navies consider squadrons, and hope you don't actually draw the attention of two huge empires who can field actual fleets in response. We never got that far in PoD but I wonder how well a pirate fleet fares against a Hierate subsect...

Re: The Dichotomy of Piracy

Yeah, that's the issue with PoD campaigns in which a single very powerful commerce raider and it's munchkin crew quickly turn it into a powerhouse warship capturing other warships and building a *Pirate Fleet* thus forcing overreactive responses by two Empires as if it's the end of the world (that c...

Re: The futility of Pirates of Drinax?

Since the collapse of the Imperium is well into the future, the players and the rest of the universe have no clue and can assume everything is fine. No one ever said it was the brightest idea to reestablish one's pocket empire with secret piracy but, as many PoD campaigns prove, it somehow works and...

Re: The Dichotomy of Piracy

"where Corsair class "speculative traders" come from (and why it is a standard design " Corsairs can be originally considered purpose built commerce raiders. As with many ships in a Traveller universe, they can be captured and repurposed for other duties or back engineered if the design is successfu...

Re: The Dichotomy of Piracy

Traveller creates strings of civilization surrounded by seas of technological and social chaos. Central authority is very far away. There aren't enough high tech starports to build top of the line warships for every possible encounter thus focusing on the immediate threat of another superpower rival...

Re: The Dichotomy of Piracy

I'll worry about all this 'reality' when every space faring science fiction movie and TV show millions of people enjoy over the decades follow *any* semblance of reality. That goes for just about every non-Traveller science fiction RPG.

Re: The Dichotomy of Piracy

Rather than worry that Traveller isn't following current 21th century Earth events and behaviors and every realistic minutia, I prefer to get back to pirates of the Caribbean and tales of the golden monkey where empire are surrounded by wild, often lawless territories allowing adventurers to risk li...

Re: Standard vs. custom design: Where do you draw the line?

A standard vessel follows the same design and is produced at those specs for all construction. Mass producing a design means a stable part supply and a specialized production procedure allowing efficiency and cost savings. Taking that design and ordering customization or submitting an entirely new d...

Re: The Dichotomy of Piracy

There are old pirates and there are bold pirates who are dead. Bold pirate are overconfident and arrogant and think they can take on bigger fish. They attract attention and keep fishing the same pond. Old pirates stay out of the core regions where worlds fat with treasure also have lots of funds to ...

Re: Ship repairs - do many hands make light work?

Remember that failing the task means you have to continue. A Boon would increase the chance of success and thus complete the task. That's what cuts the time down. Qualified people able to aid in the task also increases success and subsequently reduces the time.

Re: Tech levels and their effects on stellar war

If you want to up tech levels and ports all over the place then be prepared to spend massive amounts of non-game time calculating each world's ability to pour time, money and resources, IF they have them, into the project. Pocket Empires gave the tools to do just that but it's a LOT of work. It woul...

Re: Tech levels and their effects on stellar war

One thing importing parts should do is drive up the costs to build ships. The farther the parts have to be moved the higher the costs. There just aren't that many TL 14-15 worlds in any region so material to ship to every other port should be expensive unless those worlds are also massive factory wo...

Re: Tech levels and their effects on stellar war

"The known universe is littered with level A and B starports located at worlds with non spacefaring technologies." But are they that common to be considered normal? The mechanics still favor Class A ports associated with high tech worlds and even then TL 15 is going to be the other tail of the bell ...
