Re: High Efficiency Batteries for Jump

Collector advantage = "sweeping up exotic particles captured by a canopy and removing the need to carry separate fuel for the jump drive" plus "consume 1% of the ship’s tonnage multiplied by the maximum jump number its drive is capable of, plus 5 tons". So no jump fuel needed for the addition of the...

Re: What's Traveller5 like?

A bit like MegaTraveller and Fire, Fusion and Steel weren't intuitive. They were meant to be detailed. MgT is like a lot of RPGs today, fast and simple in designing everything. Both styles have their attraction. T5 is attractive to the advanced detailist digging into a design manual.

Re: High Efficiency Batteries for Jump

Those honking huge 'exhaust ports' aft of a ship. The drive creates an expanding field around the ship as hydrogen is pumped out and trapped within the field.

Re: What's Traveller5 like?

For all the glitches designing such a massive work, I have always found it the best Traveller toolbox. I frequently use the various systems, especially star system building, sophont and expanded character type creation from synths to clones to chimeras and robot design. I use other systems such as s...

Re: High Efficiency Batteries for Jump

OH, OH, OH! Epiphany (a moment of sudden revelation or insight) kicks me and yes, you can't recharge a collector system from another source, you already have a big advantage being able to get 'free' fuel at the cost of a little more time. Collector systems in T5 (and maybe Mongoose/OTU) are common e...

Re: High Efficiency Batteries for Jump

"with the High Efficiency Batteries for Jump, a collector "station" could be installed in a system or systems along a route and the battery's charged with the "exotic particles and charge for jump", swapped out with the used battery from the incoming ship while its changing cargo and it can leave wh...

Re: High Efficiency Batteries for Jump

"I notice an xboat can jump a 300 ton cargo module one parsec and costs ~ 30 MCr I'm looking at the x-boat stats and it's listed having a 26.5 t cargo capacity. Where is a 300 ton modular space? I'm assuming you meant exterior cargo mounts which will cost CR. 300,000 plus the cost of the cargo shell...

Re: High Efficiency Batteries for Jump

"Jump drives require both the fuel and enough power." Oh wait, as I read this I ran the design through my head again and I see now. The x-boat has a fusion reactor only big enough to run basic ship power only, no jump or maneuver and avoids any system that need power. The tender charges the batterie...

Re: High Efficiency Batteries for Jump

This issue I see is you have batteries that can be recharged elsewhere as mentioned for the x-boat description and have the power for a jump (The jump drive is powered by the battery) plus a full tank that also can do exactly the same thing. What is the reason to have both? If you can jump just usin...

Re: High Efficiency Batteries for Jump

I notice the Express Boat in High Guard has High Efficiency batteries with the same power as needed for a jump plus hydrogen fuel for a single J4. "The jump drive is powered by the battery, which is recharged during the normal refuelling operations." So there you have the x-boat being recharged at t...

Re: Question on the 100D jump limit

I always picture two portions of space around worlds with starports, especially more important ones. There would be constant jump flashes, exits in one restricted area and jump entries in another. Right after the jump exit flash you see the ship make a slow flight while the sensors do a sweep to det...

Re: How common are planetoid hulls?

What about a tactical use of high efficiency batteries? Have vessels and/or facilities with decent sensor suites and extension nets to detect incoming targets allowing monitors and other planetoid units to go silent on battery power and gain advantages for not being detected.

Re: How common are planetoid hulls?

First issue is you need a system with a belt with planetoid sample to choose from. This could be handled by having a shipyard and manufacturing facilities in the region of a belt thus accessing hulls and resources to build such ships. How frequent are systems with belts? Systems without belts are no...

Re: Question on the 100D jump limit

Maybe it's an OTU thing but everyone from terrorists with a grudge to empires have not once caused extinction level attacks on any system even knowing it can't be stopped let alone traced. You figure at least the K'kree would do that to worlds of meat eaters. Grab a rock, strap a motor to it with ju...

Re: Question on the 100D jump limit

Just make sure you don't exit directly into known or unknown traffic at speeds that preclude any ability to avoid impact. This is especially true with the 100D around populated worlds. Remember that the jump exit is a window not an exact point and you are always exiting blind. Do you really want to ...
