Stick one planet where Earth is. Stick one red dwarf where Saturn is. And stick the other red dwarf where Neptune is. Treat the orbiting stuff around the red dwarves as rings and moons.

Anything more "realistic" than that, the players won't give any "F"s about.

As masked-off areas on a system map that ships cannot jump through. Travellers with high Astrogation skills avoid them.

I don't balance anything for my games. Players either want to role-play the character they have, or they make a new one they might like better. Task checks are not binary pass-fail-only in my games. Any character will work in my games.

It's kind of like "the higher they are, the farther they fall", rather than "everyone falls the same distance no matter what their height."

If the case was discovered during an explore of an abandoned vessel or asteroid base, and brought onboard the player ship, there needs to be just a hint of clues as to what may have killed the crew that had the case. Not in-your-face-clues, of course.
