Re: Shipping in the OTU is cheap!

But, OK, much of it does not make all that much sense. That's my essential point! All else is moot when you accept this. It doesn't make the game less fun to play or the setting less engrossing. But when a thread like this starts, and people step in to try to rationalise it all, the amount of handw...

Re: Shipping in the OTU is cheap!

There are a lot of ways in which Traveller doesn't make sense, and some of these are rooted in the core conceit that this is the 17th or 18th century Atlantic world, set in space. The ships have relatively low cargo capacities. There doesn't seem to be any containerisation to speak of, interstellar ...

Re: Who are the aliens in DA01 ‘Shadows’?

... GDW was on a roll in 1980. They probably had no idea anyone would look at any of those adventures 40 years later, let alone examine them with an analytical eye in the light of 40 years of continued publishing. I doubt they thought it through in that much detail, and even if they had, they proba...

Re: Who are the aliens in DA01 ‘Shadows’?

There are mysterious aliens in RSG too - humanoid psionic aliens that have been kidnapped, imprisoned and experimented upon. I don't think they have ever been identified either. I think Traveller is like many movie series, there are so many loose threads and bits that don;t make sense when you look...

Re: Who are the aliens in DA01 ‘Shadows’?

The Shadows alien builders are not the Droyne. Agreed. I think that's the only reasonable conclusion based on the text of Shadows . They are/were a race that have died out or gone away long before the Vilani began exploring the stars. The presence of the coyns is a mystery: the shadows aliens built...

Re: Who are the aliens in DA01 ‘Shadows’?

Not all droyne 300,000 years ago were Grandfather's children so there could be evidence of common droyne who are the ancestors of modern droyne. They were often the workforce of Grandfather and the kids so should be common in Ancient sites. Could lead to confusion. If so, why is the physical descri...

Who are the aliens in DA01 ‘Shadows’?

Are the aliens in CT Double Adventure 01 Shadows Ancient Droyne? The description of the aliens who built the pyramids the Travellers explore in Shadows would indicate that they are not. In the Referee’s notes in Shadows , we read that: The pyramid structure on Yorbund was constructed perhaps 50,000 ...

Re: Is SOC per society?

There was a great article on SOC in the Traveller's Digest 7, called " Characters With Class ", by Gary L. Thomas. This article begins by noting that the rules for nobles in the 3I setting are different than the rules that should apply to commoners. It states that the primary influence on social sta...

Re: Appraise this

The possibility of a poor result is irrelevant, because you always get the most uber fantastic rolls ever and by incredible chance manage to start with a setting-breaking level of power. I've tried reasoning with this guy, pointing out the issues with his posts, but this approach seems to encourage...

Re: Would it be a war-crime?

If you want answers, you should write your questions in a way that makes them easy to understand. I tried that approach: http://forum.mongoosepublishing.com/viewtopic.php?f=89&t=121115&p=926891#top It is 100% ineffective. My current theory is that he is a bot or possibly a Russian agent trying to t...

Re: Tell me what you want.

Oh, and I want someone to buy JMISBEST a magic 8 ball. This. Also, I'd love to see some traveller on a smaller scale, places with tons of adventure that can be used as a base or visited frequently. A starport - orbital and downport, detailed like a fantasy city supplement. A city under the sea, or ...

Re: What would happen

Not really sure what kind of answer you are looking for as (upon reading the many questions you have asked), I think the only question you havent asked this forum is what you think you should have your players call their characters. Can we not all agree to simply ignore this nonsense? Please. I've ...

Re: The Traveller Companion - It Exists!

I have SO MANY IDEAS about aliens and creatures that they will require a complete book all of their own. I'd love to see a book with systems for creating sentient aliens and their cultures; for building non-sentient aliens and their ecosystems, covering animals, plants and things in between. Fire, ...

Re: Brainstorming a Ringworld adventure

One of the Man-Kzin Wars books had a zoo world featuring huge sectioned off environments based on many samled worlds one of which was the Kzinti homeworld. A human whose ship had crash landed found kzninti females in suspended animation for fifty thousand years and they are very intelligent. They b...

Re: Classic and New Era books for sale

My main point of curiosity about New Era is the Empress Wave. It's described very thinly in the wiki, and I'm curious about whether it's described more in the books, or if the thin material in the wiki is because it wasn't much described in the books. The Empress Wave isn't really covered in the Ne...

In Ringworld, Niven writes a lot like a mystery novelist, whose characters reason from first principles to determine that there is a repai...

Re: Brainstorming a Ringworld adventure

Godwin's law: "As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Hitler approaches 1."

Krenstein's law: "As an online discussion about Traveller grows longer, the probability of the discussion getting derailed by someone's hobby horse approaches 1."

True.
