Re: Growing a System Economy

Advancing their technology level is the key to the ability to control their own system. TL4 is about the minimum, as radio will allow the transmission of sensor alerts and allow a coordinated defense against any attacks. If they are truly xenophobic, most of the improvements can be restricted to the...

Re: Converting a Freighter for combat use

There are a lot of good ideas for converting a freighter into a fair warship, but they will require months or years in a shipyard and eliminate any cargo capacity. What if those options are unacceptable? Say you are the Captain of a heavy freighter and need to keep hauling cargo to make the mortgage...

Re: Converting a Freighter for combat use

I would need more details on the freighter to make specific recommendations, as well as a better idea of what it's mission would be. Is it strictly an Escort now, an armed freighter, or something in between? In general terms, assuming that it is to be an escort with no need to retain cargo capacity,...

I was surprised by the content of posts here under the JMISBEST name as I have seen that name used on another forum with a much more mature and coherent writing style. Your explanation of the situation makes sense to me. Thank you for setting the record straight.

Re: How to model high strength entites (archive/lock after 5/10/2019)

My initial reaction was "Wow. Good luck with that". The good news is that animals generally do not have specific characteristics generated so you can just say that it can drag any item up to its weight. If you really want to nail it down, maybe it can drag 1/8th its mass as a trivial task; 1/4th as ...

Re: A couple of unrelated rules questions

1a. I have not been able to find any rules for ship scale weapons with the Radiation trait so I assume that we have to use the rules for anti-personnel weapons and scale them up by applying the starship scale conversions. So yes, use 10 meters/die for the affected area. 2. This question has been bea...

Re: Alternative to drop tanks

External inflatable fuel bladders are probably more viable and closer to the hydrogen turbines. Collapsible Fuel Tank Collapsible fuel tanks (also called fuel bladders) are large flexible bladders which expand when filled with hydrogen fuel. They take up cargo space in a ship and are used to extend...

Re: Mongoose 2: Do advanced fire control and launch control software stack?

Advanced Fire Control cannot be used with missiles or torpedoes because they do not use the Gunner skill or related DMs in their attacks. Launch Solutions provides a similar DM to missile and torpedo salvos. Note that Launch Solutions IMO, is not worth the cost. It only provides a useful bonus for s...

Re: Book 7 Commerical Entity?

I have not looked at that section of Book 7 for quite some time, but as I recall all companies start at Rank 0. I suggest you re-read that section of the rules; if it does not specifically state that the company must start at Rank 0 then go ahead and bump it up.

Re: Implications of the Firmpoint to Turret conversion rule

There is not problem with the rule as written. The entire argument that "turning a firmpoint into a hardpoint" breaks the game is predicated on an inaccurate assumption. Small craft use firmpoints instead of hardpoints. Small craft weapons are usually mounted in fixed mounts. A FIXED MOUNT can be up...

Re: Where is the 600-ton Corsair?

The 1st edition CRB has the 400-ton version, I was looking for the 600-ton ship. But since my plan was to convert it to 2nd edition stats having that already done saves me the effort.

Thank you for your assistance!

Where is the 600-ton Corsair?

In Pirates of Drinax it mentions that Petyr Vallis has two 600-ton corsairs. I remember finding the stats and deck plans in a 1st edition book several years ago, but I cannot find them now. Does anyone know which book has the entry for a 600 ton version of the Corsair?

Re: Subsidized Merchant Fiances

Often it is a world or group of worlds that buy the ship to increase trade and stimulate their economies. They then contract with a crew to fly the ship itself. The actual terms of the contract can vary widely and should be negotiated as part of the adventure where the characters get access to the s...

Re: Spaceship armor: rhyme and/or reason?

Those warships designs bothered me as well, but there is some rational for building unarmored dreadnaughts. Those ships have heavy allotments of sandcasters, point defense, and screens. Those defenses coupled with their huge hull point total means that they do not really have any reason to fear anyt...

Re: How common are planetoid hulls?

One of the best uses for planetoid hulls is for System Defense Boats or Monitors. Without the need for oversized jump drives and extra fuel, you avoid many of the drawbacks while getting full use of the benefits. A Buffered Planetoid with additional armor makes a tough, inexpensive ship for system d...

Re: One shot Jump Drives

It is hard to imagine any scenario where a one-shot jump drive is worth building and installing in any ship. About the best I could think of was to move a large structure that will be permanently emplaced in a system, such as the Empress Troyhune or a space station that only needed to hop a few syst...

Re: Core 2 & High Guard 2 rules check - EW, mssiles, armor

Missiles are +salvo size to hit, then do (weapon-armor)*effect roll. Effect multiplication doesn't seem to be capped at the number of missiles. ". . . damage is then multiplied by the Effect of the attack roll (the Effect cannot exceed the number of missiles in the salvo) ." CRB p. 162 (emphasis ad...
