Re: Computers.....

Process control systems are not so much "raw computational power" (The systems that run a nuclear power plant have less "horsepower" than a Pentium 90) and a lot about "getting all the data accumulated, converted to digital and fed into the system". And that takes quite a bit of place since you have...

Re: Recoilless Rifles superior to throw-away ATG?

Some armies have a "neither and both" approach. The Panzerfaust-3 is a re-usable launcher/sight and a clip on "prepacked" launch tube. The tube is discarded after firing. Having used the previous system that had a two part rocket and a "triggering cartridge" (Anzündpatrone) fed by a 5 round magazin ...

Re: Recoilless Rifles superior to throw-away ATG?

I'm quite sure that high tech ATGWs will exist, since they have some advantages over a straight line beam weapon. A PIAT will have to be used at suicidally short ranges, but no signature, and the troops could be stealthed, and earmarked to take out battle suited opponents. A recoilless cannon will ...

Re: Recoilless Rifles superior to throw-away ATG?

The heavy (100+mm) recoilless rifles have quite a few problems IRL that are either not present or far less serious in SciFi Universes like Pournelles CoDominion/Future History or (to some extend) 2300AD. + They are heavy (250+kg) so they need a jeep etc. as carrier + They have quite a bit of back-bl...

Re: Traveller Beta Playtest Rulebook

As for time - why not. It currently is "Nachsaison" (post holliday season) and many singles / couples without childs here in germany take some of their 24+ days off (1)(2) currently and reading 250pages in a week and testing some stuff is easy. Did something similar last week with D&D5. (1) 24 are t...

Re: Best Books on the Third Imperium

As far as I understand the system (partially from GT): Each of the 11.000 systems has a noblething assigned. It may not live "on world" and may even be responsible for more than one world but it is there. 1)Typical worlds have a baron 2) Important worlds have a marquis 3) Clusters of unimportant wor...

Re: Are There Any Super-Freighters In The Rules

. I think I remember seeing a huge freighter in the rules some time back but can't find it. The type of freighter that is basically a long spine that gets cargo modules attached to it. Where can I find the deck plans for such a freighter in the rules? Failing that, where can I find deck plans for s...

Re: Fleet Battles: Where?

An incoming fleet will jump into a system with one of two options - first jump near (a few hours) enough a refueling source to replenish their tanks and then maneuver to engage the enemy. Or if they have enough firepower they can jump within a few hours of the target and engage the enemy. The fleet...

Re: Fleet Battles: Where?

This is why fleets on either side employ scout squadrons with the best sensors taxpayer money can buy. They patrol the most likely tactical points and routes for enemy vessels then report back at light speed. This would be similar to pre-satellite aircraft coastal and ocean reconnaissance. Actually...

Re: Fleet Battles: Where?

Depending on where your system is and how important it is aside from a refueling station "stay behind" SDBs may stay behind/hidden quite some time. So the "big invasion fleet" has left the low pop system that happens to be an important / useful refueling stop, maybe pulling a "black war" strike on t...

Re: Antigravity & Inertial Dampening

I have never regarded Traveller engines as being capable of omnidirectional thrust. Every version's depiction of travel has always been in a linear fashion. As to thrusters existing vs. grav drives, that's always been more of a read between the lines. In a gravity well the antigrav functions fine, ...

Re: Battleships of the various races?

Traveller20, it's TA-7 (Imperial) and TA-9 (Sollies). The vehicle catalog (TA-0) might also be intersting, nice ideas and pictures. Not sure if they are also available single on DriveThru. From the Mega/TNE/DC/2300AD/Challenge DVDs I own the scan quality is good, no DRM, useable table of content. Si...

Re: Battleships of the various races?

QLI had a complete (and licenced by MWM) book on the Solomanie Navy. They had the "whole set" including Dreadnaughts but a slightly different philosophy when it came to the speed/gun/armor balance and main weapons (prefering Pb over Meson, Beams over Missiles). It's out again on DVD from FFE (togeth...

Re: Necessity of Launch Tubes

Ultimately the question is not "what is reality" but "what does your group consider cool" If the group wants Battlestar style launch tubes firing the fighters ahead of the Battlestar, then that is what "launch tubes" represent (Steam valves for scalding they boyfriend included for free). If they wan...

Re: Where does it stop being Traveller?

For me it stops being Traveller if it no longer uses the OTU setting as written by GDW/DPG/QLI. Even SJG material is "out of it" in many cases. I have and will always see Traveller as a setting, not as a rules system. Maybe due to the fact that I used a few of them to play in the OTU before settling...

Re: Matriarchies

Aside from a few already named official Matriarchies the big question is - where does it matter? The 3I simply does not care about gender. We have more than one official Empress and Admiral (and one Admiral turned Empress), more than one Duchess (and at least one Arch-Duchess) in the official materi...

Re: Jump Plant Requirements, Core Book vs. High Guard

Am I confused, or do the rules provided in High Guard ship construction give jump drives about half the size for the same jump distance of what you get when using the standard sizes in the core rulebook? Yes. It's a Traveller Tradition..... Assuming I am calculating it correctly, then what's the re...

Re: Quick question regarding launch tubes

IIRC a proper launch tube has:

An access hatch so the hotshot pilot and the jump-trained hig class call girl can sneak in

A camera with motion detector that informs the bridge watch-stander that they did

A steam valve to fill the tube

Who cares about the rest of the details :)

Re: 2300AD: Ships of the French Arm - It Is Finally Here!

Can we get a list of the ships in there by name/type/nation? The table of contents do not list them and at least for me (owning the GDW 2300AD set / using those rules) the question is "is the book worth buying for the ship ideas in there"?
