Steve Perrin 1946-2021

Very sad to hear that Steve Perrin has died. He heralded a whole new direction for RPGs with his first edition of RuneQuest, the direct legacy of which we still have at out gaming tables in the form of Legend and Mythras, not to mention the countless spin-offs inspired by his brilliant adaption of D...

Re: Entry-Level Game: Legends of Adventure

I'm stuck renovating a 150-year old house at the moment, so everything else is on hold! At least until I get the damp out of the walls, and maybe a heating system installed. This business of 10°C at the end of May is simply no fun at all.

Re: More Heroic Abilities?

What I'm hoping to do is run a game that deemphasizes endless combat as solutions to problems, and focuses more on exploration and character interaction. That's always an interesting goal, and not often served (or at least served well) by published adventures. The poster "rust" on here use to creat...

Merry Christmas, and here's hoping I get to publish something Legend-based in 2021.

Re: Playing Legend on-line?

It's trivially easy adapting SF or Modern trappings from other games to Legend, which may be why there's not much impetus for a 3PP to write a full-blown SD Legend game. A lot of indie publishing is people writing the stuff they want to play when they can't buy what they want to play.

Re: Spells of Legend

Yeah, no reason why every school of magic wouldn't have it's own variety of longevity spell. This is what emperors spend fortunes on, after all - what could be more important than more life?

Not a lot of votes to go on, yet, though I kind of expected Common Magic and Sorcery to be the front runners.

It's kind of vague on the details, but what if Tap (Youth) either reset the sorcerer's age one year younger for every two years stolen from the victim, or stole X years of the victim's lifespan to be lived by the sorcerer instead of using up their own lifespan?
Makes sense to me!

Re: Spells of Legend

Good stuff, though I do see anti-ageing magic as more of a sorcery thing myself. I thought about this myself. The problem with making it a Sorcery spell is that the caster can use Manipulation to affect multiple targets or further extend the duration. Perhaps we need a Sorcery spell allowing the ca...

I expect this spell to be a little controversial. It reflects something appearing in folklore around the world, but might be a little crazy for common magic:

Which is Your "Basic" Legend Magic System?

This question relates to my "Legends of Adventure" thread, but it's also a stand-alone question so I'm posing it here.

Legend has a bunch of magic systems from the get-go, and a few more in supplements. Which do you think makes the best "basic" or "standard" system for a game, and why?

There is also The Blood Path by Alex Greene. An excellent adventure, even if I'm a little biased.
Not seen that before, so I nabbed it and will have a gander. Thanks for the heads-up! Why would you consider yourself a little biased, were you involved?

Re: Entry-Level Game: Legends of Adventure

How are you going to handle Magic Skills? Are you going to reduce it to a single skill per magic type (e.g. Common Magic, Divine Magic, Sorcery)? Or are you just going to have a single Magic skill? There is no magic skill, and only one type of magic*. Characters have to learn individual spells, but...

Re: Entry-Level Game: Legends of Adventure

It's going to be published. GORE is not really a thing now, it never was. OpenQuest is very much a game engine used in various setting-specific games (looking forward to OQ3!). I am writing LoA specifically to be not only an introduction to percentile gaming, but for anyone who doesn't already have ...

Re: Entry-Level Game: Legends of Adventure

As you can see I've hit on a title. I discussed "Legendary Adventures" with Matt, but it turns out that someone on DTRPG already has some Legend OGL books under that title, so I'm going with "Legends of Adventure". The aim is to be relatively generic, but somehow link it to the Legend OGL so that th...

For a basic/entry level version, I'd probably pare combat styles down to just three: Melee, Ranged, Unarmed.
If I go this route I probably won't even have Unarmed. It hardly ever comes up in my experience, so lumping it with Melee should be fine.

Re: Entry-Level Game

Thanks for the feedback, gents! This sounds like an excellent approach. I would recommend you be as vicious (!) as you can when stripping down rules, though perhaps retain individual hit locations, as players do like those. If you can strip/streamline other things you may find that extra complicatio...

Entry-Level Game: Legends of Adventure

I'm currently bashing together what I call an 'entry-level game' using the OGL Legend books. The aim is to produce a simple set of rules that can be easily picked up and played even by people unfamiliar with RPGs in general, not just percentile systems. This consists partly of stripping back the Leg...
