Re: More Free Trader

There's a whole story contained in this picture. Where is it? Who is she? Does she know the ship or who's on it? Why are they circling this structure or are they coming in for a landing? What is this structure doing standing in the middle of a boundless flat plane? etc. There's also something enigma...

Re: Opposed Checks – Need help with rule interpretation

If you rule simply that the one with the largest effect wins, regardless of making the target number or not, then it means that on average the person with the highest modifiers wins. So you might as well not roll the dice; just add up the modifiers. But that would go against he intent of having an u...

Re: Rulebook reprint

Matt,

I purchased MgT2 from Leisure Games, so I get the pdf from their Bits & Mortar download link. So no idea if they have updated or not. Have you sent the updated pdf to these providers, or do they have to clock what's going on and contact you?

Re: Rulebook reprint

So that means the pdf has been updated as well? That's easy to check on DriveThru, but I bought my copy through Leisure Games and their BitsnMortar pdf distribution. Any idea if that will have been updated?

Re: Weapon Trait: Smart

Good point Anselyn. But I suspect that's not what was implicit in the rule wording, but Matt could elaborate on this. If that is the case, I think a brief explanation would be appropriate to stop the "Huh?" phenomenon when reading the rules.

Re: Difficulty, Boon/Bane, and DMs

Is there a sweet spot for DMs and Boon/Bane to live happily together or is it literally or effectively one or the other? Whatever you express as DMs has greater weight than what you express with Boon/Bane as DMs modify the Effect as well as the chance of success. To my mind, the sweet spot lies wit...

Re: Weapon Trait: Smart

So does that mean if the armour is higher TL than the weapon you get a negative DM to hit? That doesn't make sense to me. Having homing ammo shouldn't make it harder to hit than normal aiming and firing. The rules description should say something like; "They gain a DM to their attack rolls equal to ...

Re: Difficulty, Boon/Bane, and DMs

I think Boon/Bane is a valid and useful mechanic. It skews the distribution and doesn't change the range. More subtle than a shifting normal distribution. There's no problem with what it does mathematically. It's just the criteria for its use that needs to be more rigorously qualified.

Re: Difficulty, Boon/Bane, and DMs

Good try TrippyHippy, but you're unlikely to make progress with Shawn. I note that the fairly successful Barbarians of Lemuria uses a stacking Boob/Bane system (labelled more intuitively Bonus/Penalty die). It has DMs to modify difficulties (referenced to a constant target number) and for ranges. An...

Re: Cinimatic Two Handed Shooting

I agree with allanimal. If I have Athletics (Dex) skill, and get to "add" it "as a modifier" then I'm going to pretend I'm shooting with two weapons every time even if I don't have two weapons since it will add a DM to my shots. That makes no sense. Requiring some level of Athletics (Dex) skill in o...

Re: Cinimatic Two Handed Shooting

I agree. A band die would give you decreased probability of hitting but not change the damage you'd deal if you hit. Seems logical. Otherwise, I'd place a -DM on BOTH weapons (e.g., -1 for primary and -3 for off-hand).

Re: Should Boon/Bane be moved to the Companion?

I like it and am comfortable with how I would use it in my game (in the spirit I think the rules intend it). But then again, I'm used to it from Barbarians of Lemuria. So my vote is for keeping it in the core book. But it's not a big one since if it's taken out, I'll personally just houserule it bac...

Re: Aiming for the kill is gone?

Some aimed hits will be to incapacitate rather than seriously injure. You could end up killing someone because you aimed at their ankle, which wouldn't be realistic.

Re: Difficulty, Boon/Bane, and DMs

But it's not something to be written into the rules. That's the whole point of the mechanic. It's for use at the GM's discretion for the types of things the rules can't foresee or for which there shouldn't be formal rules because of unwieldiness. The low citation of the mechanic in the rules is not ...
