Re: Weapon Trait: Smart

Stainless wrote:So does that mean if the armour is higher TL than the weapon you get a negative DM to hit? That doesn't make sense to me. Having homing ammo shouldn't make it harder to hit than normal aiming and firing.
ECM? If the homing mechanism can be tricked then you're better off not using homing tech.

Re: Difficulty, Boon/Bane, and DMs

I am a MgT2 player. So I'm into using Boon/Bane. It's one of Matthew's best inventions since nano-sliced bread for Traveller. A "I've been playing Classic Traveller for 30 years" player will be against such game mechanics. I don't know what Traveller player you consider yourself to be. But it does ...

Weapon Trait: Smart

Smart Weapons. Smart is used two ways in the rules. p75 Smart - weapon trait; p97 - smart fabrics (also smart plastics elsewhere). The weapons trait just as well be replaced by Homing - it is not used elsewhere in the rules. Homing: This weapon has intelligent or semi-intelligent rounds that are ab...

Re: Aiming for the kill is gone?

You must be a physicist. Well, to a first approximation; yes. And my answer is - for shooters at the skilled end of the table (Total DM 1 or more) 50%/(1/2) Human-sized target: DM -2 (or one difficulty level harder) 25%/(1/4) Human-sized target: DM -4 (or two difficulty level harder) 12% (1/8) Huma...

Re: Aiming for the kill is gone?

Sounds like you've been locked on a long haul flight to think about that Anselyn. And after a while to recover, some integration and fiddling about. If you assume that the probability to hit is a 2D Gaussian distribution with a probability P0 to hit a circular area A0, the the probability P to hit ...

Re: What is aiming?

As a GM (especially a playtesting one) I don't want to have to make calls. I want the rules to be clear. I am not suggesting you have to do so, I am saying you did when you elected to allow a Pop-Up to be a free action. Fair point. I did so as my reading of the rules was that as the move for a pop-...

Re: I used how many house rules????

Even if a rule elects to remain vague to allow GM latitude, be clear about it. I agree. Statements of design intent are useful. I think the sidebars in 13th Age along these lines are helpful and good. Also, the purist/pulp options in Trail of Cthulhu that allow you to tune the game to the genre tha...

Re: I used how many house rules????

As I have read and played with the beta, I have had to also look at 1st to remind myself what the rule book said about particular things. Compare and contrast the real rules. Kind of interesting in a fun way to see how the RAW1 and RAWBeta and Daniel1 interact. I agree - very hard to play...

Re: I used how many house rules????

Can you logically justify this statement? Classic Traveller was written as if it was a school thesis paper. It has lots of variations of the same rules throughout its text. Almost like a manifesto. The rules are not written as people speak naturally about a subject. I'd argue that Gareth made a ver...

Re: What is aiming?

If you are Hiding then sticking head, arm and gun out and taking a shot is not changing stance - as you are not moving from crouching to standing. So - the popping up isn't a Minor Action it's therefore a Free Action. Not sure where you got pop-up is not a minor action. As a GM you might make such ...

Re: What is aiming?

[Order changed in reply] As for shooting without "aiming", yes, when Max draws his pistol (1 minor action) and fires (1 major action) it is assumed he is aiming to some degree, just not the same amount of time as the Aim minor action reflects. Thus he neither has a negative nor positive DM on his at...

Re: Alternatives for Leadership in Combat

Ok, so right now it says: "A Traveller may make a Leadership action in combat, which increases the Initiative of one ally within contact by the Effect of the Leadership check." So are you thinking it would now read something like: "A Traveller may make a Leadership action in combat, which will allo...

What is aiming?

Ok - this may sound like a dumb question. But: What is aiming - or perhaps - where is aiming in the logical process of the rules? After all, who shoots at someone without aiming the gun at them? There must be some aiming in every shot. So, where and when does aiming occur. If we think of a snapshot ...

Re: Prone no longer gives you extra cover

Going prone is an established military reaction to coming under fire because it significantly decreases the target area for most ranged attacks. It's not "Cover" as such but it has an analogous effect. Perhaps a rule that it grants -1 DM (i.e., not as good as gaining full cover which grants -2 DM)?...

Re: Aiming for the kill is gone?

Yup, aim as long as you want, if I am standing out of that armoured trench, you're still adding 20 armour from the cover. I think we need rules to account for aiming to hit part of the target that is not in cover (as before in MGT1, a -2 to -6 from cover, success means you hit the target not the la...

Re: Does STR no longer play a role in melee

The Dex DM is part of the attack roll and thus part of the effect. So unless you subtract it back out, you'll be adding both Dex DM and Str DM to the damage roll. In the same vein, the DEX DM is part of the attack roll for ranged and thus part of the effect. So your DEX stacks with the kinetic ener...

Re: Difficulty, Boon/Bane, and DMs

I agree, I would actually use a Bane in the scenario I outlined. But isn't a Bane something that may or may not affect things? (c.f. the weather) Surely in the game world the pistol is or isn't damaged. Perhaps, as a sort of Luck roll, if the first shot with Bane hits then clearly the pistol isn't ...

What I remember from somewhere else suggested the following: Single Shot/Semi-Automatic : standard way of firing - single attack - normal damage. Burst...

TravellerRule Zero. What is your take on that, as it is written in the beta rules? We are on very well known ground here: The Oberoni Fallacy http://1d4chan.org/wiki/Oberoni_Fallacy Summary:The Oberoni Fallacy (also called the Rule 0 Fallacy) is the erroneous argument that the rules of a game aren'...
