Re: ship rental - costs and problems. Do we break char gen if ships are too easy to get?

I have implemented the idea of Licenses. One that i have is a "Ship's Master" license (thank you David Falkayn). Requires Piloting-1, Navigation-1 and Engineering-1. No Astrogation-1? Can’t get far without it. Depending on the system you are using the Navigation skill used to be the Astrogation ski...

Re: ship rental - costs and problems. Do we break char gen if ships are too easy to get?

I envision starship rental is more like Leasing a house. Say a month-to-month or minimum number of months Lease, with full background checks etc. I have implemented the idea of Licenses. While allergies to other species, especially between Vargr and Humans, would be possible. The TL8 Panacea drug should cure it.

Re: What happens if 2 black globes touch?

I have always read this as Gravity doesn't affect what crosses a BGG. Therefore, if a ship is in orbit and activates its generator, it will begin moving in a straight line, per the exact velocity vector it had at the instant the generator was activated. It moves out of orbit at a tangent to its orbi...

Re: Dedicating POW to a God

Interesting question. In the decades I’ve been playing RQ-derived games I’ve never thought about defining stats for deities. I guess what I’d do is allow them access to cult magic-like abilities. If you need to define it, I guess you could allow them to use the abilities a number of times based on ...

Dedicating POW to a God

So, I was rereading how a character can dedicate POW to a God etc. and get some benefits from that. What I have not found is anything that talks about what the God gets out of it? Sure, they get 'dedicated followers' so somehow that should make them more powerful etc. I have a scenario I am working ...

Re: Traveller EDC (Every Day Carry)

I usually thought about this from a Credit point of view. I use a simple rule: for every 10000 CR received during Mustering Out, they carry 100 CR is "cash". Maximum is 1000 CR. Of course this isn't all cash, but could be a fancy watch etc. that could be pawned. It's a simple way to create "treasure...

Re: Subsidized Merchant Fiances

Even if your ship is paid off you should consider taking out a token mortgage on it with a minimal payment. This will allow you to raise cash fast by just increasing it. Otherwise you have to apply for the mortgage and have a full ship inspection. These days most ships are leas3d for reasons of tax...

Re: Subsidized Merchant Fiances

Older versions of Traveller explained this pretty clearly. Subsidized ships are bought by a government that "leases" the ship to a crew. The government takes 50% of the profit and makes all mortgage payments. Crew is responsible for maintenance and upkeep costs. Ships are locked into a fixed route m...

Re: Subsidized Merchant Fiances

Subsidization was described in earlier Traveller versions, not sure why it isn't explained well here. Here's the deal: A group (assumed to be a planetary government, but it could be others) buys the ship. The crew operates the ship without a Mortgage, but the Owner takes 50% of all profits. Crew is ...

Re: Colonization history of the Third Imperium

Wasn't there something published a while back about the reason for the 5th Frontier War was to get to an Ancient artifact on Rhylanor? Perhaps something similar was needed to cause Cleon I to push for such a remote area to be "staked out". An advanced base from which most of the area Behind the Claw...

Imperial Culture - it is mentioned several times, but what EXACTLY is that? Clothing styles, types of address, etc. Also, these other Cultural regions - I would love more info on the CULTURES within the Imperium. Not full alien modules, but for example. I am walking down the street in the Starport a...

Re: Interesting article about the placement of Sol in Milky Way Galaxy

Interesting. Of course it would be faster to reach the edge of the galaxy by going UP or DOWN. The spiral arms are only about 1000 parsecs thick, and Sol is about in the middle. So we are only about 500 parsecs from the nearest edge of the galaxy. A lot closer than the 20000 parsecs to the Rim or Co...

Re: Interesting article about the placement of Sol in Milky Way Galaxy

Interesting. However given the short distances of Jump (even Jump 6) compared to the size of the galaxy, if we were 2/3 out or 1/2 out or even 3/4 out, it wouldn't really matter. It would take a HUGE effort to reach the Rim. (ala Zhodani Core Expeditions). HOWEVER, regardless of where we are relativ...

Re: Life support costs

Rather than go into extreme detail on the SOC of the passenger, just use the CLASS of travel. MID passage assumes GOOD food (CR1000 per month) HIGH passage assumes Luxury food (CR2000 per month) END If you want to cater to the ultra rich or own a Yacht, then you would spend more. The SOC of the pass...

Re: Another stellar navigation question:

Rule of 3s A planet must be closer than 1/3 of the distance between stars or more than 3 times the difference between them. Red dwarfs tend to have VERY close planets, so two red dwarfs separated by 2-3 AU (Mars to Belt) is plenty of room for many planets around each star. Put the Yellow star about ...

I suspect that any System Defense Force will have multiple ships in a variety of readiness status. For Example, the fleet has 4 System Defense Boats: 1 is on Active status - flying around, checking papers etc. within the 100D limit 1 is on Standby status - the ship is in port, docked etc. but could ...

Re: PSION detection

I would think that a NAS (Neural Activity Scanner - ala Life Detector) should be able to pick up on Psionic activity. Also, if you can build a Psionic Shield at TL12, you have to know what you're blocking, so I would think something should be reasonable at TL12 ish. It may not be portable, but it wo...
