Re: Travel times surface to orbit?

Even a ship with an M-Drive less than the gravity of the planet can still takeoff and land, as long as there is an atmosphere. The Streamlined feature should include lifting surfaces that can generate lift that exceeds the thrust. A typical aircraft (streamlined with Aerofins) can generate 20:1 rati...

Re: Sensors Vs Superior Stealth

One thing that you should do is continue to extend the Sensors above TL12, increasing the Sensor DM by one at each TL. That helps the sensors keep up with advanced stealth and gives higher tech military ships a fighting chance against super-stealth. This Stealth/Sensor battle should be one of the "w...

Re: Travel times surface to orbit?

I would say that the time to orbit is at least partially dependent on a maximum atmospheric speed. It's best to limit speed so that the hull doesn't get too hot; even if it can handle the heat, many cycles of hot and cold lead to fatigue that's an issue for a vehicle meant to fly as long as a B-52....

Re: Substituting fixed wormholes for the Jump Drive

What I did was use Star Gates as a SUPPLEMENT to the existing Jump Drive. A Class A starport has a Star Gate (called Jump Gates in my game) if within the Imperium. Currently a Jump Gate is a TL15 item, so only the Imperium has it (and possibly the Hivers, but they aren't saying...). It works just li...

Re: Gravity assist

Phavoc is right. Gravity Assist works mostly because the ship leaving has a lower mass than the ship entering the planetary area. Since M-Drives basically don't use fuel, you don't get nearly the benefit.

Re: Arguments for & against point-buy chargen

I have always used the "Guided Random" principle for Character Gen. When a player rolls for a skill, they roll first, THEN pick the table for the skill. SO, they get to select from 3-4 skills (usually). That makes it still relatively random, but directed randomness. I also feel that more closely mat...

Re: Char Gen House Rules

Roll 3D6 keep the best two (or now called BOON) for each characteristic, sort as you like. That way the characters are above average (but not supermen) and by arranging the characteristics, the player gets to play the type of character they want. It makes for a more fun game.

I personally think a ship of this size should be J2 with an optional version for J3 (depending on where it will be used as mentioned by Phavoc.

Re: Is there a place that is culturally cybernetic?

While not official, I have always liked the idea of the Sword Worlders being culturally Cybernetic. Yes, Cybernetic Vikings! :) Seriously, a friend ran his 3I game this way and I was really intrigued by the idea. How else would a small polity at the edge of the vast Third Imperium be able to hold th...

Watched the first few episodes.

The J2 is a streamlined version of a 50-ton Modular Cutter desiged to be used as a planetary residence, with 4 staterooms. The Chariot is a variant of the ATV.

GO! :)

Re: Super-suite on a cruise ship

I actually use a range of Cabin sizes - Standard Cabins are the basic 4Dton models in the book. I also try to take into account different sized occupants, so a Standard Cabin is Comfortable for a Medium sized occupant (human), Luxurious for a Small occupant and Cramped for a Large occupant. I have S...

Re: Passenger Adventures?

Not sure what 3rd party product you referenced, but may I humbly suggest "The Astral Splendour" published by Spica Publishing. It details a ship and lists a LOT of passengers with lots of adventure seeds for each passenger - there is also an adventure (set in Spica's Outer Veil setting, but easily a...

Re: Fuel/Cargo Containers from Deep Space Exploration book

While that is certainly an option, I personally don't like saying "That is the Imperium's rule". I would rather come up with an in-game "rule" that makes sense without resorting to bureaucracy. Modularity is quite nice and could be applied to these units as well. They can be one or the other, but it...

Re: Missing maintenance = misjump rule.

IF you allow jumping from inside the atmosphere, FINE, you cause a lot of damage to the planet. BUT, what happens to the ship? I have always ruled that you CAN do it, but if you are in an atmosphere, your ship is destroyed - roll up another character. I allowed it in one game and then we got to thin...

Re: Missing maintenance = misjump rule.

Also on misjumps there is a -4 DM to the Engineer roll for being within 100 diameters of the planet. So what about being within 10D of the planet or trying to jump from within its atmosphere? In both cases a misjump should be pretty much certain - but you can imagine situations where even a 50% cha...

Re: State of Legend

Earlier in the thread it was mentioned that Mongoose seems to be focusing on mainly non-fantasy, focusing on sci-fi settings. Just look at how nice Traveller is! Why not run with it? Wouldn't it be nice if Legend was revived with d100 Traveller material?! Would that be possible, even? While a SciFi...

Re: Setting up a new Colony

What about the Sindal or Tlaiowaha Sector, where there is no imperial involvement? The King of Drinax might well grant a Crown Grant of land on the far side of Asim in exchange for income from taxes and a percentage of whatever is produced on the planet. Asim population is minimal, so there is a wh...
