Re: Ship Design Philosophy

Funny you should mention Elite and Dangerous as I've had that game for awhile. Heh. I made my last post while my ship was supercruising across the Alpha Centauri system to a starbase at Proxima Centauri. I truly hate that star system; takes freakin' forever to cross it. Elite dangerous is a pretty ...

Re: Ship Design Philosophy

To stop and reverse direction you have to completely cancel your current vector. A space fighter moving at 75km/s 'north' has to apply enough thrust to cancel that before it can move south. You can't just blast across space building up a thrust related vector as you go and suddenly have no vector r...

Re: Nuclear Dampers & Particle Weapons

Well, that does pretty much answer my question, as far as Traveller canon goes. NDs definitely can clean a radiated ship of the radiation. Just a matter of figuring out how long it'll take to do so.

Re: Nuclear Dampers & Particle Weapons

You mean a screen against radiation from beam weapons? The explosive effects still occurring. More of a ship zaps a target into submission with a particle accelerator weapon and then wants to send over some boarders for some "inventory and acquisition". However, the boarders don't want to suffer th...

Re: Nuclear Dampers & Particle Weapons

Well, Traveller Wiki says a damper can be used to remove radiation from an area. Question: is a ship the same as "an area"? Ships are made of rather dense things like structural members and, sometimes, dense armor. An area may be just a open field. Regardless of what Traveller Wiki says, I'm also le...

Nuclear Dampers & Particle Weapons

There have been a number of Traveller-related discussions over the past decades regarding nuclear dampers and particle accelerator weapons. So I'd thought I'd start another. Under Mongoose's 1e/2e versions, can a nuclear damper screen be used to "clean" radiation from a target about to be boarded or...

Re: In-atmosphere speed of manoeuvre drives

*snip* Craft that are going supersonic, let alone hypersonic, are going to need to have extremely aerodynamic skins with minimal protrusions and disruptions. There should not be a straight-line comparison of how many maneuver G's a ship has vs. an overall speed in atmosphere. At best it would be a ...

Re: Ship Design Philosophy

Going by the computer programme that extends the point defence protection to other ships, it would seem the range is short. They might actually be slightly larger than smallcraft sized variants. This begs the question of can point defence batteries take advantage of the "Primitive and Advanced Spac...

Re: Mongoose Traveller cross compatibility and immortality

It seems like immortal characters are by definition "Transhuman". That said, it would seem like having an extraordinarily long lifespan would change your perspective. Some of the Transhumans may become extremely risk-adverse resulting in severe paranoia to preserve their life or they can become the...

Re: High Guard: High tech advantages

Is it kosher to apply an advantage to a component, even if it's not explicitly listed? For instance, the only advantage listed for reaction drives is "Fuel Efficient;" could I also apply the maneuver drive advantage "Size Reduction," representing improved miniaturization at the higher tech level? I...

Re: Starport defences

For some extra fun, you could always have a world field their equivalent of the U.S.'s "Sprint" missile. It had a 100G acceleration (hitting Mach 10 in 6 seconds) to boost an enhanced radiation low-kiloton nuclear warhead to within target interception range in 15 seconds. Best of all, it can be put ...

There should be a failsafe that cuts the thrust if the gravitics goes down. That should prevent your travellers from becoming a fine paste. :)

Re: Maneuver Drive Energy Efficiency

As baithammer pointed out, keep in mind the cost increase. Just because something is possible doesn't automatically mean anyone would be willing, or able, to pay for it especially with the budget available to the average Traveller player. Can governments afford it? Sure, but there's also legislation...

Re: Revisiting Fighters in a Post High Guard Era

Was there ever a decision regarding whether or not G-compensation covered any acceleration from high-G thrusters? I've been house-ruling that it didn't but I'm hoping something oh-fishul was published either as errata or in other publications.

Sounds like something from MegaTraveller or T4 when they used megawatts.
That's why I was asking. The conversion would let me use some of my MT resources in 2e much easier.
