Re: The Empress Wave - An Alternative Thought

That's the Key, not the device. The Consulate has one mountain, the Imperials another, but there is only one key. The effects of the Wave are not significantly different if you remove Virus from the picture. Where it gets wacky is if you call off the Rebellion. I stand corrected on the size. Alien ...

Re: Chinese Cruise missiles vs. US Pacific Fleet

The truth is that the US can and will do nothing to interfere with China exerting political influence over Asia (militarily it would be a case for the UN, which might lead to a US abstention) until the US has recovered most of the 1.2$ trillion in US debt that China owns. To move against China befo...

Re: Standard Missiles - Why Even Bother?

There are some additional versatility with missiles. And multiple salvoes are possible. The missiles have a limited number of turns of burn before they are no longer able to accelerate to match vectors with the target, but in space they don't need to be burning continuously. It's not like they are g...

Re: Chinese Cruise missiles vs. US Pacific Fleet

I think the concept of area denial has been primarily addressed here as a tactical issue. It has a strategic role. Having a horrendous number of surface to surface missiles along the shore means the carrier task force won't want to hang around that close to shore - particularly if tensions run high....

Re: Limiting size of Jump capable ships

Dragoner wrote By this point, IMO, all these world destroying weapons have been around for a long time, the Zhodani have them, everyone does. While MAD might be a reason, more likely it is ROE, things that are just not done, similar to today, or in recent wars, where the forces are asymmetrical. The...

Re: Limiting size of Jump capable ships

In response to sideranautae So, you have a particle accelerator that causes fighter craft that you hit with it to accelerate sideways at 50G acceleration? I guess if you don't destroy the craft outright the pilot will be killed by the G force alone. Um, but particle accelerators don't do that. You h...

Re: Limiting size of Jump capable ships

Except by this time, it would be easier to tailor a virus that could kill not just planets, but whole subsectors with much less effort than a bunch of kinetic kill weapons. However, this runs against reality, such as today, where genocide, and genocidal weapons of mass destruction, simply aren't us...

Re: Limiting size of Jump capable ships

Very unlikely as it is easier and cheaper to jump into 100D range and bombard with 10 or 100X that amount of nuc missiles/torps. Trying to spend the set up time (takes MANY days after jumping in at edge of system) and ships to send 400 rocks is stupid use of ships. The numbers I crunched show that ...

Re: Limiting size of Jump capable ships

A defender will never have enough resources to protect every target in a system from attack. Plus there is a massive investment in sensor infrastructure that would have to be made, not to mention the cost of maintaining it. There is never enough money in the Imperial budget to fully pay for all the...

Re: Limiting size of Jump capable ships

One way to defeat IR is quite old-fashioned - just come in to your target from the direction of the sun. Unfortunately that won't work either. When using an IR 'scope while pointed towards the sun they would use an occlusion filter which still allows detection of something in the range of a ships t...

Re: Limiting size of Jump capable ships

Thinking about the whole automatic hitting of non-maneuvering targets. If that is the big issue, it can be resolved simply by building a high-thrust/maneuverability ship's boat under robot control around the torpedo. Just need sensors, a computer, power plant, maneuver drives and a maximum of one we...

Re: Limiting size of Jump capable ships

Cool comments. We are getting somewhere. Hit it with a nuc while a couple days away. Exactly. A compact missile capable of delivering massive energy. Divert its course far enough out and it will miss. Sure. We can do it today (TL 7) with off the shelf (civilian) components costing less than $5,000. ...

Re: Limiting size of Jump capable ships

If one wants to accelerate something near c in Trav you have to start out WAY beyond the distance of Pluto (considering Earth as a target) which gives the defenders MANY days to ready a defense. So, it isn't THAT big of a problem. So, now we are detecting ships trillions of km away? I guess there r...

Re: Limiting size of Jump capable ships

Laser energy on 50 tons of metal. Theoretically you can do the interception by continuously firing even with a turret based weapon - but how long do you think you need to do this? Because a weapon coming in at you at 5,000 km/s is going to completely cross your weapon range in 20 seconds if you are ...

Re: Limiting size of Jump capable ships

I've thought about the points raised about intercepting and deflecting a kinetic weapon. A lot of valid approaches to dealing with a kinetic attack stop being valid when you go beyond some level of mass and velocity. We can look up formulas and crunch numbers of the amount of energy involved but the...

Re: Limiting size of Jump capable ships

Yes, I see your point. I am thinking this would be difficult to calculate. Imagine a pillar of metal at rest and you shoot a laser at it. You keep firing until it melts and then boils. Due to increased pressure (a gas would expand relative to the more compressed solid/liquid states) it expands. But ...

Re: Limiting size of Jump capable ships

Well... vaporizing it, as in heating it enough to melt and then boil it, doesn't change the fact that this vaporized metal still exists, consisting of a very high number of atoms travelling towards your planet at a very extreme velocity. So you have a 5,000km/second obscenely hot wind. Still hits th...

Re: Limiting size of Jump capable ships

Destruction wise, it's always been easier to destroy than create. MAD worked in our crazy nuclear-armed world because even by "winning" you would lose. And no enemy can ensure they would wipe out their opponents in one strike. So what you'd have is an escalating war where habitable planets would sl...
